If you just want a cheap way to check it out in general there's the mobile or Switch versions. I think SNES is the "highest quality" version, and GBC has the most content, but in terms of official, cheap versions, mobile and Switch at least do the job
uh............. >Shining soul
it's a dungeon crawler though >Chocobo dungeon >Zettai Hero Project? >sword of mana?
Idk man that's all I can think of at the moment.
Why would you want a jrpg without story? That's the general appeal.
Most first person dungeon crawlers
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Ys I and II are pretty story light, I think, or maybe that's only in comparison to the modern Ys games.
Rune Factory series
Fumika Fantasy
How little is little? And does random character events count? If those are fine, Azure Dreams is just "your dad disappeared in this tower. Go climb that tower and date every girl in town."
idk anon there's some pretty good subtext in there like Beldo might actually be Selphie's dad or uncle and probably your mom's cousin, Ghosh has a rivalry with you because both your dads were players competing for all the women in town and if you're good enough you can make him a part of your harem
That's why I ask how little is little. There's no real story beats other than the top of the tower. Everything else is side stuff from the town developing or doing quests for folks. You don't have to do it though.
The entire Etrian Odyssey franchise, its such a thing in the series that the remakes's main selling point is the addition of a optional Story Mode since the regular mode from the old games have litte to no dialogues and your playable characters are all blank slates.
SaGa has a lot of story so it doesn't count
any suggestions?
DCSS?
"JRPG"
"JRPG"
pretty much all jrpgs are character driven so you're kind of shit outta luck there unless you play obscure MMOs
maybe battle hunter counts?
nah dude, at least saga frontier is pretty light when it comes to story. all of the routes are straightforward with few or any twists or derailment.
>all of the routes are straightforward with few or any twists or derailment.
what does this have to do with anything ?
Exile
Nethack
SaGa games have actually plenty of story elements despite the narrative being so dry, same as Metal Max
DQ 3 has very little emphasis on the story and is pretty damn good.
I can't afford an nes right now
OP here, and uh, emulate it?
Doesn't feel right
stop acting white. There is no right about it.
moron, nes emulation is perfected to the point that emulated games are accepted in speedruns.

sword of mana as A LOT of story anon
>sword of mana
not as much as other titles my guy....
Any SMT 3 or 5. Neither have anything remotely close to a story.

ys has tons of annoying cutscenes and all of the games have cringe stories

Not sure about later entries, but the original Metal Max is story light
7th saga has a pretty barebones story. Allegedly, it was made that way on purpose to appeal more to the western crowd.
