Yeah, you do. You've played a bit now and have some real game context. I suggest going back to the fundamentals tutorial and basic trials and comparing that to what you're actually doing. Just focus on doing a couple basic things consistently at a time.

Play arcade mode on a high difficulty, it will help you to perform combos/confirms in real time without having to get destroyed by real people.
