yes but don't play high stakes or you won't like video games or being alive ever again
What are high stakes? I want to kill myself trying to win on orange. Kinda dropping the game
try different decks and the challenges instead
You’ll be hooked hard at first and then around purple stakes you’ll realize it isn’t fun anymore and you can only win if the RNG allows you to
Green stake already stacks the RNG against you pretty hard, but blue is where the fun truly stops.
Misprintiggers, where we at?
Good game desperately in need of a balance update. Higher stakes are mostly luck, I can’t imagine even skilled players winning gold more than a third of the time or so
It's a card game. What were you expecting? There will always be luck involved.
No, it's a Joker shopping game pretending to be a card game.
False dichotomy. I never said luck shouldn’t play a role at all, but it plays too big a role in Balatro, especially on higher stakes.
I wouldn't mind the game having bullshit difficulty settings and grinding if stuff that directly impacts my enjoyment of the game wasn't locked behind it just to artificially inflate the lifespan of the game.
Yeah, Balatro has like 10 additional layers of RNG on top of the card draw luck. And even the starting deck is pretty huge compared to something like 40 that is standard in many card games.
Most card games are solved and high level players control the luck.
Balatro also have many luck control cards, the only problem is how you can access those that need some balance.
Unrelated but regarding 'solved' card games I really wish someone made a decent guide on StS. I have no clue how people even get to ascension 20. Balatro is so much easier and intuitive in comparison
>win gold a third of the time
I can't even win purple once, how the frick do people do it so consistently? I got my first e14 hand after trying out Plasma for the first time and getting insanely lucky with two legendary jokers in a double tagged spectral pack.
Not past black stake. Up to then it's good shit though.
Do you like simple math and counting?
>yes
You'll like the game.
>no
You won't like the game.
For 10 hours then you'll be familiar with all the shit jokers always showing up in the store, annoyed by the bullshit rigged probabilities, tired of the mountain of fricking grind to unlock the cards so you can have fun and if you do continue and go through it you'll be roadblocked by unfathomable things such as black deck or high stakes.
Also straights need to be buffed, no point upgrading it over way easier hands that are inexplicably rated higher like flush in the poker hand board.
Why the frick do you get LESS points for a straight in a game where it's three time easier to just aim for a suit instead of a serie of numbers? Is the dev moronic?
if you like repeatedly restarting the game over and over again to hope the shop has good jokers then yes you will love the game
>get good jokers early
>never get a negative joker
>lose
>started with a negative joker
>get another from spectral packs
>miss the final blind before endless by 6 points
>lose
To be fair, i hadn't done a ton with the cards yet, it was just get optimumish jokers
I just won with 5 decks and then grinder yellow to orange but I'm really curious how so many people have the achievement for 100 million or some shit.
The scaling is pretty much endless, you can easily do so much damage that it starts using scientific notation. Boss hp also scales so much that in ante 16 you need to do more than e21 compared to the 100k or so in ante 8.
Are devs even planning an update or will it stay like that for good and he won't bother ever touching it again past the FOTM phase?
The dude basically hit the lottery. He's rich as frick over night. They're porting it to mobile now so I'm sure it will get supported
>win a couple times
>get a few huge wins
>lose all interest in playing
Its over
It's not like it has to be a commitment like it is for some people. I also did this, and I still just get an itch to play for a bit every now and then. It's a fun time killer.
fun game that becomes not fun once you hit black stake (even the other 2 stakes before it are kind of a problem but it's more a compounding issue)
Game is mogged by Slice & Dice (and STS but everyone played that already).
new info from the developer on upcoming balance update:
https://www.reddit.com/r/balatro/comments/1bpq1bp/update_from_thunk/
most notable leaks include:
>two stakes will be replaced with new stakes that add negative effects to jokers similar to eternal effect
>many jokers being changed, some with completely new effects
>blue seal buffed
>change to 8 ball: 1 in 4 chance to create a tarot card when an 8 is scored
read all about it.
picrel is previous teaser released by dev for the new joker effects.
I assume the dollar sign is the increased pack price of Orange Stakes but I wonder what the clock is. Maybe it's the stake scaling of Purple cause you run out of time faster to make a quality deck?
I'm late to the party so I'm only on Blue Stakes now but I'm curious what difficulties might change before I get there.
I'm also curious if all the people complaining about higher stakes have the positive roguelike mentality of having fun with losses or the higher stakes are actually just that brutal.
>I'm also curious if all the people complaining about higher stakes have the positive roguelike mentality of having fun with losses or the higher stakes are actually just that brutal
Most roguelites aren't as luck-based as Balatro. Isaac Repentance I can win literally 100% of the time provided I'm on a Dead God save and playing as Isaac. Spelunky is always winnable with not that much RNG at all but just really hard and prone to stupid deaths.
Is it really about people wanting their win rate to be high? Like Isaac rubs your nose in how many deaths versus wins you have but Balatro only counts wins. I guess there's a win streak counter but when the dev has said he's confident you can win 100% of the time on white stakes I'm not really sweating the higher stakes where that isn't the case.
I don't know maybe I just don't care as much about consistency. I could exclusively play as Isaac but I like experimenting with Eden and Tainted Lost. I could train religiously at Spelunky and get consistent wins but I kind of still like flubbing things.
Guess it really comes down to mentality and Balatro just works for me at least at the stakes I've made it to.
>1 in 4 chance
OH NO
but you only need one 8 so it's way easier to pull
>Timer
Probably an added expiration to the joker like Seltzer, though it is probably round based rather than hand based.
>Dollar sign
Arbitrary price increase? Probably balanced out by increased sell value, I hope.
What the game really needs is a way to control the Joker pool. If there was a voucher added that let you nuke a Joker from appearing again that'd be fantastic.
Finally got a fricking win with black deck holy shit FRICK BLACK DECK
And then I unlock Checkered Deck and get an easy win first try lmao
Checkered Deck seems like it'd be pretty easy
flush builds and pair builds seem like the only way to semi-consistently win
if you're a braindead zoomzoom you'll love it.
Higher difficulties should add new suits to the game.
>just need one jack to make this flush and win
>I have literally 10 of them
>14 cards left in the deck with no discards and zero hands
>still no jack
I am actually fricking livid.
>flush
Straight. I am so mad I can't even remember I was going for straights.
>4 spades 4 hearts
>frick it discard the hearts
>draw 4 more hearts
>are you fricking kidding me.jpg
>discard the spades
>now draw no hearts
the rng giveth and the rng taketh away
I SUFFER
FOTM trash
Would have been nice if the leftmost joker came earlier than ante 8.
>that middle joker
had you reduced your deck to one card type?
I had hearts and diamonds, kept that one mostly because there wasn't anything better. Had the chance to give arcana when you open packs joker earlier to develop vampire and reduce card type. I should have set up better for straight flush but I'm only at black stake anyway. I'm more interested in really high hands but I'm not sure if they are possible yet.
>against the storm
>balatro
great time for roguelikes
against the storm is good game actually
really? i like base builders so might try it next sale
I don't know shit about poker, does the game explains how it plays?
All you really need to know is what each hand is.
https://balatrogame.fandom.com/wiki/Poker_Hands
It's really fun. The starting deck sucks, but you want to use as much discards as possible to get better hands. The second deck is better. After the first two decks you can unlock decks that has different playstyles like the Abandoned deck.
whenever I am sad about throwing another gold run I come here and laugh at the people who struggle at white stake
