>Stronghold
Comfy city building disguised as an RTS
>Stronghold Crusader
Essentially a sequel to Stronghold
>Heroes 3
If it clicks, you can spend years of your life on it. You should really get the HD mod. If you don't like the town screen and combat screen just being small windows, set the vertical resolution to 600
>Cossacks
Never played it tbh
>oldcom
The best turn based tactics game ever made. You should really play it with openxcom.
>The best turn based tactics game ever made.
It's old and fart.tpgnw
classic XCOM is great but the original release was buggy as frick, seconding you should play openxcom or with a patch
Never played X-com (not my cup of tea), but Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, are the comfiest rtses I ever played (Essentially what said), and I wish there were more Citybuilders that played like those
>Stronghold
Refund it and buy the definitive edition instead.
I actually removed that one before I bought the rest because I saw Definitive Edition. I will wait on definitive edition until they add skirmish and I have already put some good hours on crusader.
Thanks for the tips and mod suggestions.
>Old good
>New bad
Enjoy your old janky slop instead of playing superior modern games
such as?
You aren't wrong, but the problem is we don't have modern replacements for a lot of games. Maybe Total War fans are insane for playing janky ass Medieval 2 in 2024, but what is the alternative?
nice false binary
thirding openXcom
>Enjoy your old janky slop instead of playing superior modern games
OK, what do you recommend?
Such as?
>Heroes III
The only alternative is Songs of Conquest which is a game that sadly gets boring after about 10 hours top.
>Stronghold
There isn't really any good alternative, maybe the upcoming Manor Lords even though it has less focus on castles and more on villages. But it's indie
>Cossacks
No one really gives shit about that region of Europe sadly so no games for you
>X-com
Modern x-com games are shit
>No one really gives shit about that region of Europe sadly so no games for you
They made American Conquest specifically to address that issue.
That and C3, which is literally C1, but modern and with less broken units
Older games are often less janky than modern games, when it comes to the strategy genre.
>Stronghold crusader
Best RTS I ever played
>what am I in for?
You're in for some KINO times! You should also know that Battle Realms is also on GOG and so are the Warlords:Battlecry series. Disciples I and Disciples II are also on GOG. Same with Warlords I to IV.
Thanks, I will look into these.
Knights of Honor II is also on GOG.
X-COM is pretty good. I recommend eventually jumping in with the X-COM files, if you want long and fair but challenging prologue type thing in open xcom. Do note, you will learn how to play very quickly with that one, or you will die.
So far, I am really enjoying Stronghold crusader. I am liking Heroes 3 too, but I wish there was more to do in the overworld between battles.
That seems like a very good 2nd playthrough idea. Thanks.
A note of warning about files: you can screw yourself and not realize it until 20 hours later when there isn't really anything you can do about it other than restart the playtrough(or if you can remember which if your saves was just before that moment)
Can you give an example of what you mean by that?
I can't recommend XCOM Files, at least not to a new player to the franchise. I think the first act of XCOM Files is great, but the second act after the cults is TERRIBLE. Also frick caves and frick zombies.
It is a mod in desperate need of debloating, and a dev that needs to be slapped in the face and told "no" on certain things.
>Bough something
>Instead of trying it out, ask others
Why are zoomers moronic like this? You ask BEFORE you buy something. Once you have it, fricking try it, you moron
Wanted to kickstart a discussion on some of these games as I played them I guess.
It is easier to start a thread for a single specific game.
