My favorite part of Metal Gear 2 was discovering that Big Boss was Snake's father. Oh wait..

Was that the actual big boss or Kiefer Sutherland.

Real BB is the father, and is the one in MG2. If I understand TPP correctly, the only time Venom shows up outside of TPP itself is the final boss fight in MG1. Every other time you're dealing with BB.
Given how ridiculous Venom is in TPP, it really puts Solid onto a whole new level by comparison, even accounting for the age differences.

It's one of the rare good retcons
          >Big Boss is the only character to survive after dying in the game
          >real BB, the one on the radio, has a line after the credits
          >final boss BB is fast as frick like in MGSV
          >There's a fake Petrovich providing foreshadowing
          And most importantly
          >None of this shit even matters because it has to be a secret

As somebody that only ever played the first MGS game, should I bother with the rest? Where does it stop being good?

It peaks with MG2, and it's not even that good

If you like 1 you'll at least enjoy 2 and 3. Maybe even 4 which is not retro but serves as the conclusion to the entire saga. After that it's filler shit with questionable design choices. Well there's also Portable Ops between 3 and 4 but it's not really good gameplay-wise and also not important to the overarching plot so I think it can be skipped. I'd also play the MSX games if I were you, they are pure gameplay like any other Konami game from the 80s and early 90s and deserve to be mentioned among their classic library. In fact I'd even say that they are among their absolute best, if I had to choose essential /vr/ titles everyone should play I'd probably choose them before the Solid trilogy because they are both great and important to the history of vidya

Didn't really like the level based system and soldier recruitment. Plus the levels themselves aren't that interesting, felt like I was playing some community made stealth mod for Counter-Strike Classic

So your just another MGS3gay filtered by MGS2. Should have skipped the series entirely.

homie I didn't get filter'd by MGS2 I perfectly understand its appeal. Its gameplay, aesthetics, themes, everything. It's just that I like the other games in the series more

Gameplay wise they are all good, if you're a narrative gay well just stop with 3

Wow. You rated them properly. You have good taste. You missed out VR missions for MGS1. It's a lot of fun. I'd recommend going for gold medals.
    >I'm sad that my marathon is over
It's not. 4 is underrated. Peace Walker is amazing. So is 5. Portable Ops is sorta canon and fun but no where near the rest. Problem with Portable Ops it sets up a "twist" which isn't canon. Peace Walker ignores that. (Portable Ops plus is a different game). I think you would enjoy Portable Ops if you go back to it after a few years. MGR isn't exactly canon. It takes place in an alternate timeline. It's a lot of fun as well. However you should play MGR only after 4.

I'm gonna second everything you just said.

4 is fricking kino and none of the grievances people have about it outweigh the positives. If someone enjoyed every other MGS game I can't see how they wouldn't like 4. It's not some radical departure, it's the same shit just dialed up to 11. And it's the conclusion to the story. Considering it's still not getting ported to anything anyone who has the chance to play it should while there's still some PS3's floating around

Portable OPs was really impressive when it got released and I liked it a lot, it just got mogged hard after the fact by Peace Walker. PW does pretty much everything it does but better. If anyone's interested in playing both portable games they should definitely play PO first just so it doesn't feel like a regression. Plus was just an expansion pack that didn't even have a real story mode

The thing I liked most about the Portable games is that they were actually designed as portable games with short, episodic missions instead of just being gimped versions of the PS2 games.

Yeah. I loved Portable Ops too. I have trouble recommending it before Peace Walker because of the twist that you learn during the end. I'm spoiling it to OP on purpose because I was expecting to learn more about it during my playthrough of Peace Walker, turns out it's not even canon. There's somewhat a continuation, but it's really not that. I guess OP would have no issue if he knows this before hand.
OP, basically last boss in Portable Ops during the last cutscene "twist" lies to you. Other than that story is actually canon.

I think Kojima just considered any game he wasn't directly involved with non-canon by default, but it's really not that big a deal since there's no other game that spans the same time period. If you really delve into the lore there might be some contradictions but it's not like it blatantly conflicts with the contents of other games

I agree, but Peace Walker actually references Portable Ops in the very beginning with a very obvious reference. Implying it's continuation of the story. Other than the last cutscene, I don't think there's any other contradiction regarding story.

I don't know, one of the things I always liked about the Metal Gear series is the canon is...liquid. I mean, it's really whatever Kojima wanted at the time and since the whole setting is based around conspiracies, lies and whatever else it could be retconned easily. Most hardcore fans hate it but I like the concept, it's just that his changes usually sucked.

      >spoiler
Anon I beat all of those, I just think that all of them except for 4 are various degrees of shit. 4 is great, yeah, but honestly I'm just too lazy to dust off my PS3 lmao

I guess it's a mid-late 2000s thing when people collectively decide to just start shitting on a new entry of their favorite franchise. I've always thought the same about Twilight Princess too

Peace Walker and V (and obviously Rising) are their own thing, I really do consider them to be spinoffs. And I'm not talking about the plot exclusively, they hardly even follow the design philosophy of the previous entries. Portable Ops is honestly an alright game, especially considering the fact that it's on the PSP. Like I didn't mean they were outright bad, I'd genuinely rather play MGSV than 90% of the games from 2010s, I meant that they're shit compared to the other games in the series

MGS4 is one truly reason why MGS3 even need to exist in this world. Without it game fricking bullshit when you run from start to end with m22 and don't even bother use something else.
