remember that 8, like all FF games, starts high and ends low.
the first 2 discs in 8 are the best, 3rd is ok and has a lot of side quest kind of stuff to do, 4th disc is short, weird and felt like it was rushed
all up, a playthru will take you 30~100 hours depending how much side shit you do, how much card game you play and how much farming/minmaxxing you do.
Stop leveling up NOW, and focus on drawing/junctioning. The game punishes you for leveling up until you get to 90 or so and then the enemies/bosses stop scaling with you. The more you level, the harder you frick yourself. There's a reason mandatory enemies like bosses don't give (curse you with) EXP.

5 is one of the very few games in the entire series where the characters actually try everything they can to resurrect a dead ally including phoenix downs. For that alone it gets my respect.
Personally I rate any games with the job system higher by default because IMO it is pretty much the best thing to come out of FF as a whole, even if other games might surpass them narratively.
I like it precisely because it's not trying to be melodramatic and serious like most other FF games. Its tone and story is closer to something like Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest IV. The characters are also more developed than most FF games. Which is really sad since other FF games will have like 20-40 hours of dialogue. But a character in FF5 like Galuf or Krile is more endearing with just 5 lines of text than someone from later FF games having hours of dialogue.
It's also got the job system and good music. Which are the two best things the series has. Also why FF3 is tied with FF5 for my favorite. And Theaterhythm for obvious reasons.

Threadly reminder that the gunblades in FF8 are not guns as they do not fire projectiles. They are vibrating blades that use a blank shell to generate the vibration to aid in cutting.
Everyone has the same backstory. Almost everyone is from Balamb Garden or another garden. All of them came from the same orphanage. I felt basically nothing different between them. It's supposed to be a twist but it's a boring twist and it makes the characters boring.
Laguna, Kiros, and Ward seemed more unique but you don't play as them long.
Also I hate the airship music. What a downgrade from the previous two FF games. Battle music is great though.
