People like fake depth more than actual depth. But I will admit some people will not care about the story of a game and it’s good that you can skip most of it unlike most games now which will force their story to the determinant of the gameplay
Also want to add that dark souls method of story telling and world building is no different to any other game that tells most of its story through audio log pick ups

It didn't really do that, system shock was doing environmental storytelling and item flavour text exposition way before Dark Souls was a thing.

Maybe if gigantic cutscenes and 4+ hours of recorded voice talent had more substance to them than "we spent entire story to figure out that bad things are bad and good things are good", then Dark Souls-esque storytelling wouldn't be so ground breaking and universally praised.
Vague writing that gives the player room to theorize is more engaging than explaining every detail of the lore. The Adventure Time writers fricked this up hard and I'm still disappointed.
