The Souls games are at least smart enough to make the plot optional so you can ignore it if you want to. Borderlands seems to have forgotten it's a game ever since the Pre-Sequel came out and tried to do some shitty melodramatic origin story unfitting for a game where you shoot dudes in the face with ice, and BL3 just doubled down on that annoying thing from BL2 where you sometimes gotta wait ages for characters to finish speaking before you can move on, except with less charm, worse characters and almost no jokes that actually land. BL2 at least had a few jokes that made me chuckle like the mission where you get paid by Jack to have a nice day or the mission where you keep finding dead people, BL3 doesn't even have that.
From an objective viewpoint, the Souls games have writing that's a better fit for the medium. That doesn't mean I even care for Souls games or that I particularly enjoy the lore, mind you, having better writing for a game than BL3 is *not* a high bar to clear.

Not only are Soulsborne games meant to be cryptic, they are meant to not have a definitive "this is the lore, here is what happened", as per Miyazaki himself "When I was a child, I used to read books in English, but had difficulty understanding them, so I filled in with my imagination. I try to recreate this in my games."
