        >C-COMPOSITE WAS HOW THE DEVS INTENDED IT TO LOOK!
This is almost unironically true. Composite wasnt what they INTENDED, but it's what they had.

Old CRTs function WAY differently than current LCDs and were nearly 1 to 1 with their inputs. Playing an old game wired to an LCD has NOTICEABLE input lag with native settings. Even in "game mode" most TVs still have a small amount of it.

Example: Hooked my Wii up to the living room TV one day to play DKC3 on homebrew. I was doing one of those pipe levels where you're on rails with the cart and have to time jumps the entire time.

I fricked that level up 20 times before giving up. Brought the Wii to my CRT later that day and beat it first try and it felt 5x easier.

Older game literally feel better on CRTs because they were DESIGNED for them. The opposite holds true hooking up your computer to an old CRT monitor and having resolution issues on new games because they werent designed for a 4:3 aspect ratio.

          Anonymous

Oh I enjoy playing on my CRT despite having a couple HD TVs with really good game modes. I still own lots of old hardware too.
I just like busting balls when people get uppity about emulation. It's just bantz.

When do you think we’ll have decent Gamecube and PS2 performance for an affordable price?

          AYN Loki maybe? Or RP3?

          >RP3?
          Here's hoping.
Though I'm more concerned with portability than price. Not that there are a plethora of GC/PS2 games that would look great on a tiny screen, but pocketability is what's most important to me personally.

GBA native games inherently feel natural since they originated on a handheld. E.g Gradius Galaxies, Aria of Sorrow etc

i had a retroid pocket two about a uear and a half ago. it was great except the acreen had some weird issie where if you stuck it in your pocket the liquid crystal would get stuck on one side of the screen and make it really bright white and it would take awhile to go away. eas this jist a dud or are all of them like this? did they ever fix it? also ehy is the retroid pocket 2+ only $99 now? i remember it was like 180 when i bought it. i really want to get another one but i dont want it to have the same screen issuea

Just sold my RP2 to buy an RP2+, here is the deal.
-New PCB, runs a bit smoother
-New d-pad and XYAB, the d-pad is miles better but the XYAB is debatable according to preference
-Touch screen, don't know how I used a regular RP2 for so long
-Newer Android, whatever I guess it is nice but barely matters fr
-New Retroid Launcher, looks nice and works okay but unnecessary

There may be more differences but those all that really matter.

Problem with the Retroid is the screen is fricking awful and you're forced to use Android rather than chucking something like JELOS on there.
Dunno how the 353P screen is but if it's nice then I'm sold.
It's a pity, as the 2+ is pretty close to where I want a handheld to be power-wise I just can't stand the screen. Looked dull and washed out compared to pretty well every other handheld I own. That and I just can't stand Android in these handhelds. Navigation is ass and before too long you have a thousand apps (sometimes even just system ones) running in the background and you have to use one of those background app cleaner apps or manually go into your open apps and close them all. It's fine on a phone but feels like shit to use on a handheld.

The RGB10Max2 also has a nice ergonomic design. I bought one and had it crap out on me after 3 months of moderate use. The screen stopped working, replaced the screen, and still had the same issue. So the issue is probably the PCB, which I'm just shit out of luck.

I almost bought another Max 2 since this is just the gamble I play when order these from chink land. But since I got one of these plastic grips I'm totally content for a while.

Also forgot to mention I have a Powkiddy v90, which I bought on impulse since $40 seemed to good to be true. Works well but mostly my wife uses it so I can't speak on my experience too much. It feels good to hold but feels like really cheap plastic.

It depends on what you can tolerate. I'm particularly finicky about weight and input lag so I'd rather grab these chink handhelds that break by just looking at them the wrong way (it's funny, I just started having issues with mine yesterday after a good while) than using my phone or tablet. I even have a decent grip for my 8bitdo gamepad and even wired I'm not willing to play on my phone despite it being quite more capable, it's just not for me. If Vita had been a lot more open I'd probably just go for that instead, but seeing as it's barely better than a PSP when it comes to emulation I could never consider it regardless of how nice the screen is.

Wasting screen space on a large handheld is still a bad thing because it's less comfortable to hold it at the same distance as you would a small handheld. The effective screen size is smaller because of that.

Nah, he’s right. The 3DS uses rectangular pixels. It’s why the SM64 port looks so crisp on the N2DS XL. It’s not just marketing. It genuinely uses a 800x240 screen.

The framebuffer is 400x240, but the screen is 800x240. It only renders in 400x240 in 3D mode.

Yeah, so in 2D mode everything is upscaled on the horizontal axis. The resolution of the screen is still 800x240, even if in 2D mode it’s fed 400x240.

Yeah, the 2:1 scaling makes it look like the 3DS has scanlines. I prefer the 2DS for this reason. It's the only model that does 1:1 scaling

Not necessarily a problem. I’m just disputing the claim that retro games aren’t upscaled on the 3DS. 2:1 isn’t 1:1. Whether that’s meaningful is up to you.

You can't reassign buttons on GBA games and the default config is shit, SNES games also look like shit in most video configurations you can run. The form factor is also shit, the 2nd screen is nothing but dead weight when emulating those games and you can't even turn it off depending on the emulator and 3DS version you're running, also have to deal with shitty floppy hinges.

It is great for DS games though, I'll give you that, I don't even give a shit that you get black bars at the top.

You can get an R4 for like $10 shipped. Hell DSi doesn't even need a flashcart, though you might run into bugs that way.

            Anonymous

Is R4 a brand or a type of card? That sounds good but I'm wary of a $10 flash cart. I would feel like it could die and corrupt my data at any time.

              Anonymous

The R4 was the first popular DS flashcart. Most cards now are called R4 but it's only for brand recognition.
DS piracy was huge because these cards were so cheap and reliable. You won't have any issues.
The only advice I have is that you should use Retrogamefan's YSMenu kernel. It's better than the official kernels.

Its screen is suited for DS. I haven't got my 3DSXL on me, but if you compare a 3DSXL and a DSiXL you'll see they have the same screen size but the 3DSXL has a sort of bilinear-looking filter on it which looks pretty shit when the DSiXL's screen is sharp. You can of course hold iirc start and select on boot with the 3DS for the sharp look but you get this godawful small screen. (not my pic, googled quickly).

You basically need to get a new 3DS XL for it not to look tiny as frick. Most people don't want borders around an image. You mod the 3DS and run DS games without the filtering upscaled and even widescreen patches, but it looks actually worse. Then again some people just don't give a shit about how their games look or run I guess. DS is only really enjoyable on the DS.

I have to disagree with that anon though on the DSi being the king though. The fat DS with a DS Lite screen would be the king. The DS Lite has a shitty build quality, but perfectly sized screens for the resolution, any more than that makes the pixel grid way too noticeable.

Late models of the DS fat have the same screens as the DS Lite, which are noticeably brighter. If you flash the firmware, you can even add brightness control.

It's not about whether or not it's distracting because it's not. It's the fact that it looks like shit in a world where tons of chink devices or even a hacked Vita/Switch could deliver you a half-decent image.
              >muh autism non argument
You can see several people ITT agree with me.
You can go onto any forum and see people agree with me. Tons of people complained about the choice between the image being blurry and taking up the screen or there being too much black space when the Ambassador program launched.
No one likes huge borders on a decently-sized display.

                >It's not about whether or not it's distracting because it's not.
Then there’s no merit to your argument. You complaining about it being “ugly” is indeed something a fussy autist would do. Your chink handhelds’ 4:3 screens are for naught. They aren’t CRTs. At 1:1 the PAR results in a non-4:3 image on fixed-pixel displays. Also it looks like upscaled garbage.
                >You can see several people ITT agree with me.
Yes, some people share your opinion. That doesn’t make your opinion the objective truth. You can find forum posts dedicated to worshiping mud filters and gaudy borders. Does that mean these things have objective merit? No, it means some people like these things. Or dislike in the case of muh:
                >pillarboxing
                >letterboxing
                >windowboxing
But just because some people dislike these things, that doesn’t mean you can make claims like:
                >NO ONE likes huge borders on a decently-sized display.
That’s far too broad a generalization. People who don’t care about “muh black bars” are extremely unlikely to be making forum posts about them, because to them it’s a non-issue. There isn’t a problem that needs to be solved.

    > Magical Pop'n
side scroller action game with some platforms, it's pretty fun

    > Illusion of Gaia
Action RPG, really fun to play and interesting story

    > Terranigma
It's like a sequel to Illusion of Gaia, better story and better gameplay

    > Yoshi's Island
This one is pretty popular but it's still a fun game

    > Zelda a link to the past
One of my favorite zeldas, the gameplay is very good and challenging, compared to the other zeldas

    > Donkey Kong Country (the whole trilogy)
The 3 games are fun, 2 and 3 have a better level desing and bosses but 1 is still fun to play, pretty solid platformers

Don't ever get a RK3326 device for PS1 emulation guys, anyone that says the emulation is "flawless" is full of shit.

All the ecelebs always test by playing "MUH TEKKEN 3" and Crash or some other normalgay game for 5 mins before vomiting their verdict, nobody actually sits down and combs through the game library proper. Legend of Legaia slows down every time you use an art , Love & Destroy is very slow during menus and other places, many other games have random hiccups in places that you can only notice if you play for more than 5 mins.

If your standards are low enough that you're okay with that, that's fine but people shouldn't call it "perfect" or "flawless" by any means. VITA/PSP have compatibility issues but what they do run, runs a lot more better and reliably than these chink devices.

Any chip not using A76/77/78 and A55 ARM cores isn't really worth buying unless it's under $100 and all of those devices using RK3326 or equivalents are above that price at the moment for no reason and the hardware power gap for just spending 20-30 dollars more. RK3566 chips and similar chips with just A55 cores need to start being the performance floor for these devices.

RG-353P would probably be the suggestion for now but anything that is a step up from the RK3326 like the RK3399 would work but honestly, the Odin Lite is probably the next best thing to get in a similar price range. Everything else has enough horsepower but you compromise too much on price, features, comfort or convenience.

I use the PUAE core in retroarch and while the performance is fine, the touchscreen doesn't really work as a replacement for the mouse, it's more like using a trackpad. Apparently this is a limitation of how the Amiga mouse worked. Having said that, emulating the mouse on either stick works pretty well, enough for a few levels of Cannon Fodder at least.

These little handhelds come out too frequently. There's always some sort of fault and 3 months later you have something new that's better. RG353P would have been fine from the start, instead of releasing all of these different ones. Frick you Anbernic, I'm not buying another one, not specially after I had to buy a replacement screen for mine that cost a third of the fricking console.

Also I see people constantly suggest phones, but they're pretty damn inconvenient in comparison. I love the screen on my smartphone. I don't love anything the frick else. It's much heavier with a gamepad, more input laggy even with it connected directly through USB-C and the setup is ass in comparison. My little piece of shit handheld boots in about 10 seconds on a mediocre microSD, and after that all I have to do is select a game. On my phone I have to deal with either polluting my shit with emulators all over or use a games launcher, put the thing in the fricking grip, put the cable in and hope to god I set up each separate emulator to find where the fricking ROMs are because newer Android decided to make it a pain in the ass. And then enjoy thick black bars on the sides because every phone is now stupidly 21:9. Frick that noise and give me a gameboy.

Screen resolution is shit, it's slow to start, buttons aren't great, I see tons of ghosting in games and barely any game scales properly.

I have the gpi case 2 and I'm happy with it. it boots fast and is easy to use with Lakka. I made a custom rgui theme so my menus and UI looks like its being displayed on a gb pocket.

its a 640x480 screen that was supposed to be ips but ended up being tft, but it looks nice regardless. only downside is its a bit on the blue side, nothing youd notice in colored games but anything grayscaled and you can see it

Bought an RG351V because of the novelty GB form factor. Actually playing it made me realize the ergonomics are uncomfortable after less than an hour of play. Decided to double down and ordered an RG351P, which despite having an inferior screen I've actually played it way more than my V just because it actually feels pretty nice in the hands.

Too bad RG353P is a thing now and has a better screen and CPU while still looking ergonomic, but hey, what can you do when they shit these things out almost monthly. Would have gone with a 351M but I hate the feel of metal in my hands, more so when it acts like a heatsink for the thing. Kept wishing they would release another 4:3 horizontal layout handheld but in plastic, who would have thought they would actually do it that soon.

I don't know why you're always so autistic about smartphones in these threads, obviously flagship smartphones are multiple times more powerful, but some people have specific use cases where they don't need a top of the line device. I know I personally don't plan on emulating anything more powerful than Dreamcast on the go so buying a phone just for emulation would be a waste of money when one of these handhelds can do the same thing at a fraction of the cost, but don't let me stop you from keeping up with the Joneses.

Unfortunately you're limited to RPG Maker 2k games through easyRPG and some ports here and there. It's got a weird mix of indie games that came out not too long ago (that kinda look like ass on the RG351P due to its lower resolution) and some retro PC games like redneck rampage or the PC version of heart of darkness. I would love it if there was a relatively cheap, not too big handheld that could handle old windows freeware 2d games and the like. Maybe some VNs as well.

this is why I recommend instead to get a 3DS or Vita and emulate there, even if you don't have a game in mind those have native libraries with killer apps you can fall back to (not to mention actual quality control the chink machines usually lack)

  56. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

    >get into the chink handheld meme and get a RG351P
    >end up just going back to my old PSP

Not sure why there's just something about it that makes it not comfortable compared to a PSP, maybe it's the rectangle shape. All the eceleb shills praise the dpad on it but it feels really stiff and the analog sticks have all kinds of issues where the Y axis is reversed in some cases and sometimes it's not. Not to mention you usually have to set the dead zone quite high so it doesn't drift.

      Anonymous

Agree with the shape not being all that comfortable, but I don't know what to say about the rest. The d-pad I can do diagonals with without hurting after a short period of time, unlike the PSP one. I've been playing Ys I Chronicles and Megaman BN1 on this thing and I've been using the d-pad the whole time, something I would avoid doing on the PSP. The analog sticks only gave me issues emulating PC-98, but the deadzone I had to set was the bare minimum for it to work fine (0.1 if I recall correctly on RA), maybe it's a unit thing. In contrast on PSP I had no issues with deadzones ever on its analog slider, but it feels like it gets stuck often enough, so I never ended up using it either for this reason. It's known that in rk3266 devices certain ports without a setup detect the axis reversed on sticks (for instance the sm64 port used to) but that's not a thing with RetroArch, Drastic or PPSSPP, which cover most emulation in it.

Yeah I just got mine today and I immediately noticed I hate the dpad, I pulled out my New 2DS and I much, much prefer the low down clicky feeling to the high up rubber one. Do any of these things have a dpad like that?

Most of these consoles have a normal d-pad with a contact pad instead of snap dome switches. Personally I find the 3DS d-pad really uncomfortable, it's good for menus but not much more than that. You can do this mod in case you're having problems with hitting the bottom though

Thanks, that seems a bit too involved for me though.
I just really like the way it's almost very low down to the case, so it's very smooth to roll my thumb from the top or bottom to the sides instead of having a big drop in between them, and the clickyness means it's clear and tactile when you press it instead of having the travel time and mush making it less immediately responsive.

The original Retroid Pocket 2 (not the plus) used snap domes, it was very clicky. Not to my tastes at all.

Half tempted to get a 552 since they're on sale.
Don't really care about N64 or Dreamcast emulation and I've heard nice things about the screen which is usually one of my complaints about these chink devices.
Anyone know what 4PX is like for shipping? I don't want to order this thing and not get it for a month or two.

Got a chinkshit recently, but can't be assed to play games I've already played.

Are there retro games I've missed? I'd usually try games from top100 lists.

I've been playing Marvelous: Another Treasure Island recently

Which games do you usually like?

Can you anons help me decide on a chink handheld?
Currently deciding between the Miyoo Mini, grabbing the 552 while it's on sale or the 353P

    >Miyoo
    +Looks cute and customizable
+With screen size games apparently look good on it
+seems like it'll make a nice Pokemon machine with the benefit of playing other shit
    -Worried about it being cramped
-Worried it's not going to handle shit like Yoshi's Island or SMRPG very well due to less power
    -They're apparently very fragile?

    >552
+Screen is apparently really nice which is something I like in a handheld
+Enough power to do everything I want (don't care about N64 or Dreamcast)
-Price is obviously shit, but a guaranteed nice screen and grabbing it on sale outweighs that for me
-Heard build quality can be shit, same with battery life
-Triggers are shit, but again I can't imagine I'm going to play much that needs l2/r2, all my favorite psx games work fine with just l1/r1, GBA is just l and r

    >353p
    +size seems good
+enough power to do what I want
+stacked shoulder buttons in the event I want to play something that utilized L2/R2
-Worried the screen quality will be as shit as the RP2+ (huge potential negative)

    >inb4 3ds or vita
I just want something running on JELOS or Elec
    >inb4 RP2+
Hate Android on these chink devices

I would go for the RG353P myself, the screen on the RG351P I have is decent (despite an issue all of them have where on one side there's a little bit of backlight bleeding, colors are fine). Hell I wish I waited a bit more and grabbed a 353P myself.

Yeah, decided on that. People keep saying the Miyoo cramps after a bit and I just can't warrant the 552's price. Hoping the screen on this thing is nice.

Got an RG351P yesterday but today it bricked itself. Should I get a Retroid Pocket 2+ instead? I got the 351P mainly for GBA because the screen is supposed to be better, but that doesn't matter much if it doesn't work.

What happened to it? Did you put firmware on it

I was just charging it, then I unplugged it and it made a loud pop noise and shut down in a way that's obviously not normal. Now it won't turn on and when I plug it in the light just blinks yellow. If I try to turn it on while plugged in the screen just displays "4V" and then it makes a horrifying screeching sound until I unplug it, where it makes the pop sound again. I was using a type of charger that I've seen people say is ok to use (A 5V 2A USB A one) and it had already charged it just fine once already.
I contacted the company I bought it from 2 days ago now but their customer support is glacial, I had to send them a video of it happening and so far all they've said is to try a different charger, as if that isn't the first thing anyone would do.

If you can't replace it for whatever reason, you could open it up, unplug and plug the battery to see if that could fix it. It isn't too difficult, the most annoying part is the screws, which are hex 1/16 and you might not have that one screwdriver or hex key laying around.

They're not the best at customer support. I find it funny that the page that lists replacement screens says explicitly to contact them first to ask if there's any stock and all I got as a response days later was a link to the same page. They did deliver though.

Yeah I got it from a company here in the UK called Droix because I assumed that I would get faster and better customer support incase anything went wrong, but so far I've had better service from Ayn in Hong Kong. I'll give it another day or so and if they don't reply with a replacement I'll try opening it up like you said. I was just worried incase the battery was damaged because of the sound it's making.

If the battery is somehow dead and by awful luck you have to buy a replacement, instead get an odroid-go advance battery if you can, it's compatible and has a higher capacity.

You start with all the SNES and Genesis classics. From the top of my head:

    >SNES
    - Chrono Trigger
    - Terranigma
    - Illusion of Gaia
    - ActRaiser
    - Super PunchOut!!
    - Secret of Mana/Evermore/Trials of Mana
    - Hagane
    - Pocky and Rockey 1/2
    - Umihara Kawase

    >Genesis
    - Alien Soldier
    - Gunstar Heroes
    - Dynamite Headdy
    - Castlevania Bloodlines
    - all Sanic games
    - Contra Hard Corps
    - Vectorman
    - Xeno crisis (guess you can call this one a modern classic)
