Nah I'd rather play old AAA games from before 2016
they look crisp and run smooth and never stutter
I don't get what's wrong with modren games. it's like they all choose to be foggy washed out stuttery mess

This, what the frick is that weird blurry dotty shit and why is it in every fricking game nowadays? I played Zelda on the fricking Wii U and it was CRISP, why are games on current gen hardware so fricking weird-looking?

        I'd really like an answer
what is it about modern game engines that changed?

          Anonymous

The engines didn't change, the people using them did. Cheaper, stupider people now make up 99% of AAA payrolls, compaired to not that long ago where keeping competent people on staff was considered a worthwhile investment still.

          >Changed
The artists and direction changed, not the engines, or at least mostly not them.
Everyone is too fixated on 4k AAA cinematic quality instead of having strong art direction carry the visuals, and therefore everyone resorts to fog (Allows you to add cheap atmosphere and light effects and also make it look more like a movie, and also hider low render distance sometimes) and washed out colors (Muh cinematic again, and also lack of contrast makes flaws less noticeable).
          >Stutter
Mostly because of the aforementioned cinematic focus with its gigantic textures even for tiny, insignificant objects, tons of postprocessing that washes out the colors, and fog. Especially fog.

Because they prioritize making very good looking trailers and still images over the actual game. Also lots of companies are trying to expand more and more but end up stretched thin, making them rush deadlines moreso than ever before

I played Singularity last month and the way it played out was a pretty nice breather because it was smooth. Same with Mirror's Edge. AA was a nice middle ground between creativity and having a lot of money but almost all of them got fricked by publishers. I barely get excited for new indies anymore and there doesn't seem to be more games coming out that are based on games that I really like so it's kind of a drought. Everspace 2 was great.
      >at least 5 indie games I am interested in that are still in early access for years (Death Trash, Stardeus, Fabular, Deadeye Deepfake Simulacrum and The Universim even though Universim is "technically in 1.0 but they still have content they need to add)
      >at least several other games (not necessarily indie) that haven't been released (Abiotic Factor, Tactical Breach Wizards, Silksong, Bore Blasters, Zephon, and Tempest Rising)
      >really liked Project Moon games but they made a gacha game that they focus on far more than any other upcoming game
      >not worth looking at AAA releases anymore because they suck
      >uninterested in most of the popular games everyone talks about
      >a lot of new indie releases are doing some trend like "roguelite deckbuilders" or "Vampire Survivors"-styled and almost nothing that catches my attention

Bro there's tons of games post-2016 that are good. Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima, and Elden Ring exist, and Baldur's Gate 3 somehow truly got the DnD experience in a video game.

      just play indie games

Some of my favorite games ever and also some trash....

Hollow Knight, Undertale, and Pseudoregalia are some of my favorite games of all time. Hollow Knight is the only non-Fromsoft game I'd ever actually consider Souls-like.

Stray was cute and I mainly played it for the fact it's based on Kowloon Walled City. Being based on Kowloon Walled City gives you a ton of bonus points in my book.

Blasphemous I own but haven't played it. I only played a little of Rain World.

Paper's Please is more so an art piece then a game I feel, but it's a noteworthy experience.

Terraria I got bored of. It's sandboxy like Minecraft and I think sandboxes are kind of a waste of time.

Hat In Time, Shovel Knight, Shahtae, Celeste, Cave City and Notia look fun as frick, but they're not at the top of my priorities, I'd rather play some older AAA games like Dark Souls 2, or all the Dead Spaces.

Enter the Gungeon looks fun but a bit mindless.

Don't Starve, Stardew Valley, Slime Rancher etc are too sandboxy for my tastes. I try to avoid anything similar to Factorio because that game destroys lives.

I can't say anything about the other games I don't know anything about them.

If the developer is not owned by the publisher and the developer owns the IP, it's indie. I'm not certain on all of them but I'm pretty sure a large majority of OP's image count.

Slay The Spire, Hat in Time, & Shantae Pirate's Curse are owned and published by their developers. The notoriety or size of the team or game does not mean it isn't indie. Shantae's old games were not indie as they relied on other publishers, but modern ones that WayForward self-publish are. I would need to look into whether the developers of Rain World & Momodora own those IPs or if [as] & Playism do, but if the developers own the right then they are still indie. Cave Story+ was the only game I knew wasn't indie because Nicalis has owned Cave Story's publishing rights for a long time (hard to forget when they shove Quote & Curly into any crossover or marketing stunt they do); it's like Shantae in reverse where it began indie and then no longer was.

Pic related came out yesterday and despite being an only mildly-known sprite-based beat-em-up going for a 5th gen aesthetic, it's not indie. The IP isn't owned by the team because it's a spinoff to an equally-obscure 90s PC game.

The first 3 Momodora games are literal 1 hour long romps on itch.io, the 4th entry is the first one with a more noticeable budget and multiple devs rather than one guy in Brazil.

That's based as hell, never really looked into this series before but I respect it now. If I ever get off my ass and learn how to make a game I can only hope I can get out a fun little hour-long game people respond to.

            >rain world IPs
            it's quite a ride.
Developers were picked up by adult swim before they even formed a proper company when game still has been in "cool screenshots on forum" stage, but after the kickstarter. They still owned the IP, but AS covered their expenses.
Roughly after the game released, AS wasn't satisfied with the sales and took rights hostage. Videocult manged to release a single update before then, that was somewhere at the beginning of 2018, a year after release.
Up until 2021, videocult didn't actually own rights to their own game, until they managed to get them back through some negotiations with a new publisher, akupara games.
Now RW is published by akupara and rights belong to videocult, but AS still gets their cut from sales.
I don't have a single idea about DLC considering what a giant mess it was, as it wasn't developed by videocult but still published by akupara, and has been a community effort all at the same time.

By that logic, can non-indie games then become Indie?
For example - Vangers was made by K-D Lab, a company where the creator worked, and published by BUKA. When he left, he formed KranX, which had nothing to do with K-D at all except for having a bunch of previous employees, and now, KranX is the one maintaining and publishing Vangers. Does that make Vangers retroactively indie?

          Anonymous

So they're supporting the original release that BUKA published? That was technically not an indie release, despite the devs running the show. But if they put out a new version or even just re-released it as KranX, then it'd be indie. At least by that metric, which I think is the most objective way to consider things.

        Anonymous

Indie should mean made and distributed without the funding or oversight of a publisher. Hence, independent.

But then EA games started putting out "indie" games and it's completely lost it's meaning. Indie is just a buzzword now.

probably Astalon, it's a metroidvania with minor roguelike elements (there's no random generation or redoing large portions of the game, you just get to upgrade your stats with currency upon each death) and stays pretty fun and challenging throughout. I usually don't bother going for "true endings" in games but it doubles the game length with multiple new areas, unlockable characters, and unique abilities.
The only major issue I have is that you have to go to a save point to swap characters until 5 hours in when you get an item that lets you do it whenever, which seems unnecessary. Shilling over.

It's pretty fun, I play it on and off. Make sure you know what you're getting into though, it's pure battle autism, there's no town/overworld exploration or other RPG tropes. It's the kind of game that gets you thinking of team/relic combinations when you're not playing it. 100 heroes is crazy. Development is slow but the dev seems autistic enough to deliver eventually.

False Skies. It's a fun not!jRPG, set in a Game Boy-like engine/UI, with a job system seemingly influenced by the Saga games, and surprisingly maze-y intricate dungeons starting from early on.

I hate that Indie games are slowly turning themselves into AAA-lite.
Almost everything comes to the same artstyle (Pixelshit/PS1-shit) and barely any genre distinction.
Most games are the same shit with a twist - We have like a billion Boomer/Movement/Classic/whats the buzzword these days shooters, a trillion earthbound-inspired RPGs, a quadrillion metroidvanias, with just occasionally some outlier.
How many, or have we ever seen Action/character action games? How many actually notable immersive sims there are that aren't just "boomer shooter with inventory"? What about adventure games? CRPGs? RTS? Rhytm games? Some experimental shit that doesn't even have a name? How many of those do we see, quality or not? Why barely any/no Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, DMC, Diablo, Crusader:No Remorse, Oirignal System Shock, God Hand, Simcity, Sims, frick, spiritual successors to fricking ANYTHING other than Metroid, Doom and Earthbound? Some of these genres aren't even that more complex to replicate and make a game upon.
I am not saying indies that aren't those popular genres those do not exist, nor that the majority is never good, but most of what we get today is just the same shit over and over, almost as if indies have become the AAA, which they were supposed to stand against for that exact fricking reason.
The only notable Indies of the last... i don't know, fricking decade i guess, i can remember are Rimworld (RTS/Sims/Dwarfortress amalgamation), Hat in time (A 3D platformer), Stardew valley (Harvest Moon) and Pizza Tower (A platformer on Wario land/Sonic base, instead of yet another bing bing/metroid level jumpwalker). That's it. 4 games in a decade that try to stand out.
    This just feels wrong.

I feel like you dont play indies because philistine devs all copying whatever the best game was in the past year has been an indie dev thing since 2012

        Anonymous

That... Was not the point of my post at all, anon.
2012 was around when the indie scene was starting to pop off (Or so i remember, fell free to correct) and started getting the rep of "Actually fun shit that AAA wont do".
Now it's been 12 years, and all that was improved was jack and shit. It does not even try to copy what was popular anymore - It just copies upon itself over and over, instead of trying to copy something "new" and fun

      >Why barely any/no Resident Evil
here you go anon, 2 indie games that try to emulate classic RE

        Anonymous

I know about Alisa, anon. I fricking adore how it's like the only PS1-style game that actually TRIES to embrace its PS artstyle in gameplay and direction instead of just using it as a crutch, like how for example New Blood games and many 3D indies do. Never heard of ET though, i'll check it out.
The problem is still the same. I didn't say just "No Resident Evil", i said "No/Barely Any". Two good games in a scene that existed for a few decades by now, and those are obscure as shit, is the problem i am pointing at. We need more genre diversity in indies overall.

          Anonymous

          >Never heard of ET though, i'll check it out.
I think you'll enjoy it, it's not a very scary game, moreso spooky, think Sailor Moon haunted house episode, that's the sort of tone. Only real issue is the lack of a map and the endgame has several rooms respawn enemies without giving you health pickups to correspond with that, but it's not too bad to get through. It's flawed but has a lot of heart.

            Anonymous

            Oh, it looks like that...
Well, i guess i'll just believe your word that it tries to emulate classic RE then instead of playing it. I was expecting a 3D one like Alisa did, but i don't think i really like what i am seeing, even if the game itself is supposed to be really good.

              Anonymous

there's no 3D aiming or tank controls if that's the kind of thing you were looking for, but in terms of weird puzzles using key items, conserving health and ammo, and cramped encounters with the undead, it's all here.

RNG slop/rogueshit/cardslop/deckbuilder is synonymous with lazy game design. AKA exactly what indie devs are known for. Instead of making actual quality games, they shirk the responsibility of making the game well onto the player's shoulders and lie to them about how if they were good, they would win.

I keep forgetting that Serious Sam is Indie by definition.

So they're supporting the original release that BUKA published? That was technically not an indie release, despite the devs running the show. But if they put out a new version or even just re-released it as KranX, then it'd be indie. At least by that metric, which I think is the most objective way to consider things.

Yeah the original BUKA edition does not run for shit on modern systems. What's sold on GOG today uses a rewritten engine with QOL.

What did the update add? Is the Ultimate Edition the way to go for 1/2 Genie?

I played sirens on launch and it was genuine liquid shit. Even if the game somehow became more fun, as anons here say, it still lacks Kaufman soundtracks, which was like half the charm of previous games.
1/2 genie hero i found quite fun, mostly because Jake went all in with the OST and because i liked the cartoony artstyle, but it's the most barebones and basic of them (Still better than launch 7S though kek).
As for PC - It's the peak of the series.
        >Fun moveset that expands with the story in meaningful ways
        >The story is actually interesting, instead of just "being there"
        >The characters are not braindead morons and actually act like they have at least one braincell in the story, and their dynamics are great too
        >The dark island is genuinely fricking terrifying on first play
        >The big bad is actually dangerous, powerful and relevant to the story, instead of Risky just being a b***h to everyone hamfisted into a random plot again
There's a reason wayforward kept re-releasing to literally everything in existence instead of the first or the DS ones.

Im looking forward to Shantae Advance, feels like she deserves better games. Is Risky’s Revenge worth a go too?

          Anonymous

Risky Revenge is quite basic, but enjoyable.
Only notable things i can remember about it is that the backgrounds are fancy, and the layered level gimmick. Kind of wish the latter stayed in the games - it was quite fun to explore.

          >What did the update add?
It wasn't so much an addition as it was a rebalance. The original game was a timed exclusive for Apple Arcade and was piss easy so it could be played on an iPhone with touch controls. When it eventually came to console people had a lot of complaints about the lack of difficulty so a year later they went back and changed a bunch of little things.
Having played both, the difference was noticeable and welcome, though like all Shantae games buying potions at the shop still might as well be cheating with how easy it makes the game.
          >Ultimate Edition the way to go for 1/2 Genie?
It lets you play as a few new characters, Risky was IMO the best new mode. It's not essential though, worth the extra $5 over the barebones game on sale but not worth the extra $10 when not on sale.

Are any of these even good? Or are they just your typical indie shovelware that is pretentious homosexual dribble?

What even is an "indie" game these days? Literally half of the games in OP's picture were funded and released by major publishing companies.
