probably fear of causing irreparable damage to their brand like overwatch 2

      Anonymous

It's a multiplayer only game they would have to continue to put money into it to maintain servers, make patches, and add additional content. Literally no one played the beta, they knew it had no chance. If they just released it and abandoned it that would damage Sega as a whole. This way it will be forgotten about by literally everyone except this board.

        Anonymous

        Wasn't it a close beta?

Yes but it still only peaked at about 600 players, I would assume no one even bothered to try to get into it. It also didn't help that the few people who did play went on social media and shit all over it. They probably made the prudent financial choice to cancel the game and let it be forgotten.

Companies need to realize that unless you have a really unique idea for a multiplayer game, people are not going to stop playing the ones they've already invested hundreds of hours into just to play yours especially for something as niche as extraction shooters. The people who play them are literal cheating psychopaths who get off on the ability to torture other players. They're not going to jump ship to your lovey dovey SJW frick the powers that be sort of thing. Like maybe change the gameplay into something a bit more player friendly or something.

      Anonymous

You don't need a unique idea just really slick gameplay and potent advertising which Hyenas didn't have. Art design is included in advertising when the explicit goal of a project is to earn money, they killed their own game by trying to look good to their peers. Apex succeeding despite it's horrible characters was only thanks to the Titanfall devs FPS experience and Battle Royale shooters having a large audience with very few good options.

        Anonymous

By "unique" I mean something interesting with the gameplay or artstyle or characters or yeah, if there's something not being fulfilled with existing games then you can try to go for it, but Hyenas had really interesting going for it. Seemed like its target audience was all over the place too trying to appeal to the extraction shooter market, older millenials with the retro pop culture stuff, but in a totally Zoomer way and nobody liked anything about it.

Older millenials don't even play games I'm having trouble understanding why people are thinking any demographic is asking for this. This is a woke urbanite platitude kind of thing that goes across gen lines it's what happens when timid STEM workers get trampled by loud propagandists.

The oldest millennials were children in the 80s. Less likely than middle millennials but still likely to be a decent amount.

Hell, my mother was in her 20's when games really came about and still spent a large portion of her time on them until the day she died. Generational effect is minimal.

Older millennials were born in the early 80s and we're still playing games. I look at the game and I see some kind of 80s and 90s nostalgia going on, but it's done way too ironically and tongue in cheek. I love 80s and 90s nostalgia, but I really hate that.

The only thing I can guess is that there's a certain portion of Zoomers who cling to 80s and 90s nostalgia even though they at most they were babies on the tail end of the 90s.

I bet the boomer execs who thought this game would be a good idea are going to skate by clean and just try it with something else.
Fricking NO ONE thought the game actually looked good and interesting, it's been ridiculed since fricking announcement. It was so fricking soulless and unoriginal it couldn't of been made any other way than an out of touch committee of boomers making a stylistic design of the game based on what they think teenagers like, and then just trying to force out a game solely based on that and no other ideas to go on.

The Super Game never existed. When Sega talked about "Super Game" they were refering to a bunch of games made by multiple developers. This might have been part of it but the general idea was reviving a bunch of old IPs to see what sticks- Not make a new extraction shooter.

They showed up and told the developers whose dreams were crushed over the past year if they've made progress and to give a report at the end of the day.
They take that report the next day and report with it to another manager above them.
The manager chain eventually reaches the CEO. Nobody does anything with those reports but report to a higher up.

Yes. When you think about it, pretty much every single smash hit game in recent memory was single player focused.
    >Elden Ring
    >Baldur's Gate 3
    >Spider Man
    >TLOU franchise
    >pretty much all of sony's games for that matter

Most of the big flops I can think of were multiplayer games. All those ripoffs of overwatch, fortnite, pubg, etc. I think part of the reason is that there's only so many multiplayer games people can play, especially when they all demand your attention with battle passes and other progression systems. You only really need a few in your life. But singleplayer games are one-and-done, people will keep buying them.

      Anonymous

Once I bought the battle passes for two live service games and tried playing and keeping up with them both. Never again. I came home from work and logged into one game to complete the checklist, then log into the next game and complete its checklist, then it was time for bed. It was soul crushing. If you want to play and keep up with two or more live service games you literally can't have a life.

These devs don't understand that people who play live service games already have their game and they've built up their account for many seasons with skins, borders, rank rewards and other bragging rights. They're not gonna give up that shit for some new half finished live service game. That's why you see games like Halo Infinite losing 99% of its players after a month. It's just live service players trying out a new game then going back to their old game where they already have all the stuff they worked for.

Halo Infinite lost 99% of its players because it was a shit game with no updates and it's only now that they started turning things around.

Yeah, a lot of multiplayer games seem to ask too much for you these days. Specially games with constant updates and changes to game play that you need to remember after taking a break.
Probably one of the reasons why TF2 seems to have a constant fanbase because the game barely changes every year so people can easily come and go as they please.

multiplayer games got too big to be successful

        Anonymous

Battlepass model works if your game already hits critical self-sustaining mass and is actually something people want to play and gets people on board for it and also has enough cosmetic options to justify its existence.
That's why shooters still do it while Dota 2 is abandoning it.

Lmao, no, not until we know what the other projects Sega spent $1B on are.

As long as Activision continues to talk about how they make a billion dollars a month selling battle passes and skin packs in Call of Duty, and Fortnite, GTA Online, Apex, etc. do the same thing, every other publisher on the planet is going to keep chasing that high.
And publishers will continue to make the mistake of thinking they can just make their own version of what's already popular and people will magically abandon the game they've invested hours into to play your game.
Ubisoft is probably panicking right now that they missed the certification window and XDefiant is going to launching right next to MWIII.
Sony had allegedly 12 live service titles in development, Bungie consultants had them smother Last of Us 2 multiplayer because there was no monetization plan, and then they shut down their studio that was made of former COD devs anyway. So it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next 5 years.

This will only get worse as the Warzone platform continues to exist since it can just remaneuver and "absorb" popular subgenres, e.g. extraction shooters with DMZ, it being COD's battle royale mode in general, while also still being fricking Call of Duty.
If Sega was smart they'd pull a Nintendo and start figuring out what single player stuff in their catalog they could use for a modest turnaround.

Everybody thinks they can just hop on the bandwagon and live service is just the 2020s version of everybody making their own Call of Duty/cover shooter in 7th gen.

Obligatory note about how the first litter of Hyenas dies before they're even born because the umbilical isnt long enough and they get stuck in the pseudopenis so by the time they rip it open and are born they're already dead from hypoxia
