its at its best when you're only engaging with the exploration and crafting systems and completely ignoring the story and npcs (I've never played the dlc maybe they're better)

I'm at my most 'satisfied' playing Skyrim when I'm in some random cave mining moonstone or iron and get a bunch of perfect gems (I just stealth-archered like 5 cave spiders) and then using transmutation to turn iron into gold as I explore picking herbs for alchemy

After installing a mod that removed level scaling, I thought the game was decent but worse than Morrowind. God I fricking hate Bethesda's level scaling systems where you have to be careful about what skills you level or else you end up being weaker than the enemies. That shit is so stupid and almost ruins the point of the games being RPGs. It's strange they went that route too, since Morrowind was completely fine without it.

imo one of the best parts of an RPG is getting your ass kicked in a certain cave or temple or whatever, and coming back later after you're higher level and slaughtering the enemies who were giving you trouble. Anyway thanks for reading my autistic rant.

An okay open world action game with some watered down, but still okay, RPG mechanics and perks. Perks can make the game so much more enjoyable as it goes on.
Like pork and salt work together so well, as do mods and this game; you basically can't have one without the other.
It's a disappointing Elder Scrolls game in terms of its RPG elements and even the combat. If you're going to have a game where the combat feels so weightless, floaty and weird then you may as well just have dice-rolls again like Morrowind or Daggerfall. Exploration is nice only because of the way that the map is designed and how much stuff can happen randomly, it's certainly a step up from Oblivion in that regard (but Daggerfall with mods blows both out of the water hard). However, as an RPG it remains a massive downgrade from Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion (even though this game was already kinda watered down, I still appreciate that you are somewhat constrained by your class). There are no constraints on you due to class and I don't like that, it lends to the Dragonborn not feeling like a real part of the world at all.
Like I said, exploration is probably the nicest aspect of the game and it's difficult to describe why, but it basically comes down to the world being competently crafted and mostly not boring to traverse if you're not totally OP. The worst aspect is the scale of the world as it feels far too small and underpopulated, but that's been a complaint since Morrowind. I hold out hppe that TESVI is going to have more capacity to generate cities that feel like cities but not too much hope.
Crafting and enchanting both feel great and are a lot of fun.

Overall, it's a mid-tier game with some addictive systems, massive potential to be actually great thanks to mods and a well crafted world which lends to fun while exploring. Its biggest drawback is that it is a reminder of Bethesda's move away from traditional RPGs, which do what they do very well, to ARPGs which are simply servicable.

It's a blast if you learn to accept how fundamentally fricked the combat is. No mod will fix it, but that's fine because you can compensate in other ways. Combat related mods that I will probably never play without:

    Follower tweaks/UFO
    Precision
    First person animation overhaul
    Combat gameplay overhaul

Skyrim feels insulting to play with the constant handholding, laughable puzzles and zero consequences to anything the player does. What do people who have thousands of hours in modded Skyrim do in the game? Are there that many overhaul mods or is it all porn mods? Do the porn mods really provide that much entertainment value? Seems like a lot of effort over just jerking off to some vids or pics online.

    Yes I am genuinely asking.

      Anonymous

Both. But it terms of porn mods some go crazy with it and start having bandits rape the player character or collecting women as sex slaves, but I think most people just want sex scenes for companions, considering love and marriage buffs are already part of the base game so they'll use the "realism" argument.

    Pros:
    >Special Edition looks good for its age.
    >Voice acting and faces are improved over Oblivion.
    >More NPC activities than Oblivion. NPCs can play instruments, sing songs, work an anvil, some other things too I think.
    >Crafting is pretty addictive, I enjoy it more here than in other TES games.
    >Stuff looks cool. The armour sets, the cities, the Argonians - all on point.
    Cons:
    >In the special edition there's a draw distance of a about 50 feet and then it's all low detail from that point on. Standing on a mountain and looking across a valley, this ugly limitation is bothersome.
    >Your companions can't ride horses. When you ride across the plains, they sprint behind you with their bad pathing programming and frequently get stuck in the scenery. This does not look like Fellowship of the Ring, Todd. Not at all.
    >Special Edition provided a welcome new coat of paint, but it's the exact same game under the hood with ancient bugs. Todd wants to keep selling you the game but he doesn't want to spend money on fixing it.

and one of the biggest praises morrowind gets is its freedom in letting you do between a wide variety of different builds and playstyles. Its not worth losing gameplay things like that for superficial things like NPCs playing instruments

    it's fine but deeply flawed,

    >Skyrim has a good map but it is not well connected because the devs knew that with ez fast travel they didn't really have to think much about traversal
    >really crappy sandbox for an open world of it's size
    >guilds are implemented like garbage and built like one questline each with no tangible benefits for being a member
    >the story and quests, don't think I even need to explain
    >simplistic combat, boring magic with no spell creation, enemy scaling

I still play it yearly along with morrowind but I have to tweak it way too much for me to call it more than a 7/10

It terms on just existing in the word, it's the most soulful game every made. First person, large vistas, highly interactive game engine, and of course, a LOTR level soundtrack. The game itself, it's okay, but it doesn't matter when the game has so much soul.

    Stats
They "simplified" the stat system by removing strength / dexterity, etc, but made the damage/defence stats super convoluted which led to insane power creep with attack damage multiplier stacking and also made the game require level scaling to try and keep the worlds power more relative to the player.
Ironically enough the stat system would have been more simple, (and there would be no need for level scaling at all), if they kept strength/dexterity and had no % damage modifiers in the game. They could have had a DnD style stat system where strength and such cap out at like 25 through hard stats and focused more on the "action" portion of the game

The UI has poor screen real estate management. too much clicking through menus and scrolling.

    The writing
    >is inconsistent. and at time unimmersive
A woodsman not believing spriggands (who live in the woods) are real is not believable. It is immersion breaking.
    >Low fantasy, or intrusion fantasy, is a subgenre of fantasy fiction in which magical events intrude on an otherwise-normal world.
The writers make it feel like the spriggands are invading in an otherwise normal world (which is not the case). its like they want elder scrolls to be low fantasy. Skyrim looks like earth. the only tell its not earth is the skybox. The NPCs sometimes act like the creatures dont belong in the world.
    Thats the writing.

    >Rehashed and recycled draugh/dwarven dungeons everywhere as filler for radiant quests. Same claw/stones "puzzle", same enemies.

Excellent atmosphere, beautiful setting, terrible quest design, boring story.
I hate being the chosen one, and also being allowed to do everything with every faction without any choices ever forcing me to definitively give anything up when I make them. Every time Id replay it Id avoid meeting the greybeards and becoming dovahkiin as long as possible so I could live in the setting like a half normal person.
I also think the melee combat is floaty and lackluster which is an understandable problem but a big one for a game in that setting. I think thats the real reason everyone becomes a stealth archer.
The dungeons are also too visually repetitive and I wish Bethesda would get rid of level scaling in favor of having inherently more dangerous places.
    Soundtrack is pretty amazing.
