      Its based on History
A lot of piracy happened in countries that had no access to the games they were pirating
Steam was like, let us sell them the games
      Magically, piracy rates dropped

Then EGS became a thing, magically piracy rates raised

It is very easy to purchase games, they cost a pittance and I can download them anytime again, while pirated copies of modern games take up a shitload of space and I'd need to re-pirate them later. I always pay for games if I think it is a good deal. If the developers are enormous homosexuals, I will pirate however, for example I pirated RE8 because they had the nerve to try and make me pay 80 bucks for it. I also always pirate console exclusives like Demons' Souls.

I'm unable to enjoy something I don't own legally. I know it's dumb but it's always been like that. I can't enjoy a rented or borrowed game.

And I don't like having to keep installers, patchs, saves, etc. on a drive somewhere. Something like Steam is convenient.

Also, why should we justify something so normal as paying for entertainment ? If you're so poor that you need to make a choice between playing games or eating, you shouldn't play games until your situation gets better.

      Anonymous

      >If you're so poor
For me I just never understand why you would pay more for something that is identical in quality.
Typically when I discover a game I want to play, I will immediately go to G2A, see what price it is there, and then see if its on sale on Steam. If its above a price on either platform I would consider unreasonable, I will pirate it instead.

chargebacks aren't free. You are losing money to begin with. And then when you deactivate the key you are pissing off an actual paying customer and doing little to nothing to deter the scumbag reselling keys from stolen C/Cs.

                Anonymous

Yes. You have to assume they bought the key in good faith because you can't know that they are buttholes who are doing it just out of spite or not. Sure, lots of people are using key reselling sites to get cheap foreign gray market keys, but again, you can't "know" this for a fact.

                doesn't make sense to me
                >buy key from illegal key site

Because the websites are de-facto illegal. It's not intentional. The whole thing is a legal gray area. Go on G2A and tell me where it says "WE SELL STOLEN KEYS"

                Anonymous

why would a scammer openly admit to scamming?
all you need to do is get the player to show you you the recipe, inform them that he has bought a stolen key from a website that illegally purchased them and then have them duke it out however they like. in the end, they key site will very likely have to provide another working key if they don't want to get sued.

                >ah, it's from an illegal key site, they sold you a stolen key. you have to sure those guys, nothing I can do, sorry

It's a kind of prisoner's dilemma. If you are deactivating keys and your competitor isn't, "that dev is an butthole" starts trending and might impact your sales for now and evermore. So you grin and bear it because you think everyone else will grin and bear it and this causes the source of your misery to continue unabated. A few devs DID try to take a stand against scummy reselling websites. The twitter and reddit army assembled to inform the internet about how scummy the DEVS were while the butthole reseller site owner played the victim despite knowingly profiting off crime. More keyboard warriors feel entitled to free shit than there are those who will take up your defence.

Are those studios now closed down? Did they die because of the angry customers buying stolen keys from illegal sites?

                Those devs are spineless morons.

If they're buying keys for your game off a re-seller, disabling those keys WILL lead those people to buy from the source. It's not the same as a pirate who will just shrug and move on. Especially for multiplayer games, they are usually buying to play with friends and just looking for a quick discount.

Cracking down on stuff like g2a is just common sense, and letting some mean comments sway you makes you a fricking idiot who shouldn't be running a business in the first place.

Demos are tricky. When youtubers are shilling the latest flavor of the month a demo gives people enough of a taste to cool their FOMO and is a detriment to sales. Same if you're a AAA heavily advertised latest big release.
The only category for which demos work to increase sales is indie-shit from literal whos. But then when you get popular because of people playing and recommending your shit, now your demo works against you...
And ask any poor child of the 80s and 90s, we used demo discs (and disks and tapes) to fill our bored, empty days when we couldn't afford games. We weren't "evaluating" Metal Gear Solid to see if we wanted to buy it, of course we did, we just didn't have money.

                >You will be hard pressed to find a troony who uses TLOU2
I wouldn't. I wouldn't be hard pressed to find a troony who uses western cartoons either.

Troons don't actually watch anime because if they had to watch they would realize all the traps (word they hate) are side characters whose sole purpose is getting misgendered for a laugh.

With video games they can self-insert more easily by choosing the female protagonist. Troons play video games all day. That's how they get the delusion that they are female because they are always playing video games where they can be a woman.

Videogames are the gateway to trooning.

                >With video games they can self-insert more easily
Except no one enables their attention seeking to calling them valid, hardly a gateway to anything.
                >sole purpose is getting misgendered for a laugh
                >implying they don't like that
Why do you think some of them don't even attempt to pass?

Pirated multiplayer is a pain in the ass to set up, has noticeably higher ping, and has to be manually updated instead of just letting steam do it's thing in the background.

    Shoutout to Cube Racer, though.

it's easier to just pay on steam than to look for a link that probably won't kill my computer and/or wait for a crack

I buy games that I like and want to see more of. Either through the developers or the franchise.
