I think the idea might be based on convergent evolution in real life. Like how you have raccoons, and Japan has tanuki that are "raccoon dogs", because they're dogs but they happened to evolve all the same traits and occupy the same role in the ecosystem as raccoons. So you have Diglett, and then you have this eel pokemon that looks and (presumably) behaves like diglett, but is not related to Diglett at all. So an RFake is a "regional fake".

Well, I think they will be (biologically) drastically different creatures that look very similar. Think about it.
A mole will never evolve into an eel. An iron ball won't become a balloon (example, not confirmed), a balloon creature won't turn into a bug (same), so it's basically mimicry. People say convergent evolution, but convergent evolution is more like Rhydon and Aggron. They fill the same niche and evovle similar characteristics. These would be Pokémon that evolved (in the Darwinian sense) to mimic already existing mons.
The Diglett mimics come from eels, so they are fish, but it was beneficial for the ones with faces similar to Diglett to thrive.

Dark Moltres looks like its on fire but it isn't, psychic Articuno can inflict freeze status but does it with a psychic attack.
Regional forms are actually a good concept and so far i'd say the execution of them has been solid, but the idea of regional fakes is concerning to me because i don't see how they can be anything but lazy if theyre easily confused for other pokemon

I will say part of what Game Freak said in 2019 about Dexit was they had to abandon many ideas for shit they wanted to put in the game for one reason or another and by cutting the 'dex, they were looking to start working more on some of the stuff they'd shelved in the past, exploring ways to bring it into the series finally. This shit could have been in gestation for years for all we know.

And you're forgetting Khu also said there's a lowered number of returness from past Gens. If we take 435 to be the optimum number to work towards for a game launch, then adding 250 officially to the in-Region dex and 35 as transfer bonuses still leaves 120-ish spaces to add pokémon.
And you know, dexit means they don't need to fart about with all 900 older ones to take up time vs adding new pokémon, but you're dense so I had to spell it out.

By SwSh's second trailer we had the story gist, the gimmick, and the MO on things like the Wild Area and themes of the region being intense competition and the focus on the "flash" of Pokemon battles. We don't have ANY of that for SV, not even the fricking region name, which is absolutely ludicrous.
Maybe they're waiting for some big dedicated direct in August. If the next trailer is a small one that just show a few new pokemon and gym leader or two then their marketing just sucks
