Every time I've seen the combat it's a bunch of dudes that have this exact stance slowly waffling towards you & its impossible for me to take it seriously.
In both of my playthroughs it bugged out and i kept getting put in a cell for missing morning mass. They would let me out right after mass ended the next day and I would be immediately hunted down by the circators and put back in the cell for missing mass. I ended up just killing somebody and running out both times.

Play hardcore on your first run, don’t be intimidated. Henry is supposed to be dog shit at everything at the start which makes leveling up very satisfying. Once you’re able to train with captain bernard you’ll get a good hang of the combat and things will start to make a lot more sense.

I don't think I would have enjoyed the game as much without hardcore limitations. Getting lost in the woods trying to take a shortcut was kino. So was learning the land by heart and galloping anywhere in a few minutes.
Getting lost in the woods in kcd is one of the most kino things you can do. It made quest like finding ginger much more fun. You really have to pay attention to the directions that npcs give you.

Big weapons are generally a pain in the ass to carry on yourself.
Crossbows take a really long time to reload but I can see a scenario where you could use one as an opener before engaging in melee combat with your enemies unless it's something like a siege or something.

That's a good point. If you tune down the enemies ability to master strike if you attack in the direction they are not blocking it would already make a big difference. Or maybe a small window to kick opponents and throw them off balance to open them up for a combo

You forgot how eventually every ill-equipped highwayman can masterstrike and block so well that combos become virtually useless, which is in my experience the bigger problem.
And for the smoother combat thing they'd only need to adjust the targeting lock-on, a mod did that already. Unless you mean "I should be able to take on three to four people without any issues because I want to play Skyrim".

They clearly want a level of realism in the fact that engaging any amount of enemies greater than 1 is a bad idea, but there has to be a better way than constantly throwing your camera around as they grapple you.
Realism is great when it doesn't clash too hard with gameplay (brewing is a good example). But when it does — gameplay should take priority. And I'm sure there is a way to make fighting multiple opponents fun without making it easy.

It feels like they could not really make up their mind tbh. You are tasked pretty often with fighting groups of 3-6 throughout the game. Stealth is a bit barebones and is not all that fleshed out. And the AI does not really respond well to being shot with arrows. A lot of the time they just stand still and stare at you while youre aiming your bow 10 metres in front of them Stealth and archery feel like optional supplements to melee. Which is definitely the main way to play. I really love the game but this was not handled well. Group combat just boils down to backing up and countering
I can pull off combos and they're ok in 1v1. In group fights you are basically only backing up and master striking most of the time. A system that rewards more aggressive play would be nice. Maybe the option to have both light + heavy attacks on top of the directional combat. Or an extra move (kick/pommel strike) that opens up enemies if you land it perfectly. Decapitations/dismemberment would also be rad.

The best you may get is a halberd but that would be moronic to use out of formation. Same goes for the crossbow. Those are only practical as a large cohesive unit.
I'm no expert on the time period or location but a spear or crossbow doesn't seem that unlikely to me. Crossbows were pretty common for centuries in Europe and used for hunting as well. A spear or a pike doesn't seem that unlikely either. Granted a two handed axe is maybe a bit far fetched, they could add a poleaxe or something.

I actually found archery easy and bought a bow IRL. The only mods I got were the saving one and the lock picking simplified (which they later patched into the game).
I didn't, there is a pair of bracers (cuman bracers iirc) where part of the model pretty much points exactly where your arrow will land if you have issues with archery. Even without it it's pretty doable after some practice
They are pretty good, but not as good as spamming master strike obviously. With a little practice you can chain them. They're definitely worth using to kill solo enemies faster

The 3-strike combo's are pretty doable, especially the ones that start with a stab. Try to start the combo when their sword is held in a different direction. Also the opponent is unlikely to counter after you win a clinch or masterstrike them, Thats a good time to try to pull them off. The 4 strike combos are really tricky but the 3 strike ones become easy after you get the hang of them
they become pointless at endgame, sadly, except the one that throws the enemy in the ground because it's broken, you can just clobber a dude as he's getting up

I played as a horse archer. Got a fast horse - Pegasus, I think - and went around shooting enemies in the face, then retreating and waiting for them to charge at me, then shooting them again. Over and over, until even the late-game plate-armored bandits fell after one or two shots.
The funny thing is that I didn't need Cuman armor for that build, because I rarely if ever got into a melee fight. So instead I went for a charisma/noble outfit. I lost the save years ago, but basically my setup, IIRC, was:

I do enjoy the game for its difficulty, and the fact it's closer to a RPG where you start as a nobody than every RPG who claim you're a nobody.
It also make cheesing very satisfying, I once tried killing everybody in Skallitz, left the place at level 5+ in almost every combat skills, wearing a set of cuman armor.
But the game isn't flawless, the combat system is clearly not intended to handle more than one opponent and it shits the bed really fast (I had 3 enemies run circle around me like they were playing musical chair, and I'm regularly forced to stare at my opponent's feet), and there's a few annoying bits like buggy quests (really wish I could see through the Monastery quest without it breaking) and a lack of small QoL.

I did but it I never go the hang of it. Dodging, blocking and stabbing worked well for me. After watching a few let's plays I still don't get it but I hope bow or maybe hand cannon is in next game. That looks difficult but rewarding
I originally tried playing as a goodie two shoes who tried to not kill people or who only stole the thing he was requested, but one too many guard annoying me about torches while I was waiting, and I just started stabbing people when they inconvenienced me.
Once you've got basic skills from bernard: Wear lots of armor, sprint away a little bit, then turn back and immediately stab. Opponent will still run towards you, most of the time won't be able to block it in time, if you're lucky you can stab someone's face and then it's a quick kill or at least significant damage

Because the game came out 7 years ago, and there were numerous mods on Nexus, but the game itself was pretty complete, so what big things could you mod in beyond various kinds of skins (which people did)? There's a bunch of QoL mods, but you don't need them to make the game playable like something from Bethesda.
Of course I'm a good christian, I spare my opponent, then I run them over with my horse, so technically I didn't killed them and I get to loot their corpse.

Custom/selectable protag would be dope. I've always wanted a game like this where you can play as a monk or priest. I'd also really like to see polearm use expanded, iirc you can't carry one with you pretty much at all which makes the game too centered around the sword, and more moves for both the polearms and mace would be cool. I really like how random encounters can happen during fast travel, but I thought they could actually be more frequent and maybe a little harder since once you get even just a plate cuirass bandits can't touch you. My fear is that they'll simplify the combat and/or add stupid fantasy enemies and glowing weapons and shit, or worse, skins for a first person game. I know it's probably going to be in the HRE or at least Poland again but I think a Hundred Years War setting would be even cooler.

In both of my playthroughs it bugged out and i kept getting put in a cell for missing morning mass. They would let me out right after mass ended the next day and I would be immediately hunted down by the circators and put back in the cell for missing mass. I ended up just killing somebody and running out both times.

Play hardcore on your first run, don’t be intimidated. Henry is supposed to be dog shit at everything at the start which makes leveling up very satisfying. Once you’re able to train with captain bernard you’ll get a good hang of the combat and things will start to make a lot more sense.

Getting lost in the woods in kcd is one of the most kino things you can do. It made quest like finding ginger much more fun. You really have to pay attention to the directions that npcs give you.

Big weapons are generally a pain in the ass to carry on yourself.
Crossbows take a really long time to reload but I can see a scenario where you could use one as an opener before engaging in melee combat with your enemies unless it's something like a siege or something.

That's a good point. If you tune down the enemies ability to master strike if you attack in the direction they are not blocking it would already make a big difference. Or maybe a small window to kick opponents and throw them off balance to open them up for a combo

I think all they need to do is to do something to make the combat less passive/reactionary. As it is the combat relies way to much on just waiting for the enemy to make a move and then counterattack. There needs to be incentive to be aggressive.
You forgot how eventually every ill-equipped highwayman can masterstrike and block so well that combos become virtually useless, which is in my experience the bigger problem.
And for the smoother combat thing they'd only need to adjust the targeting lock-on, a mod did that already. Unless you mean "I should be able to take on three to four people without any issues because I want to play Skyrim".

Realism is great when it doesn't clash too hard with gameplay (brewing is a good example). But when it does — gameplay should take priority. And I'm sure there is a way to make fighting multiple opponents fun without making it easy.

It feels like they could not really make up their mind tbh. You are tasked pretty often with fighting groups of 3-6 throughout the game. Stealth is a bit barebones and is not all that fleshed out. And the AI does not really respond well to being shot with arrows. A lot of the time they just stand still and stare at you while youre aiming your bow 10 metres in front of them Stealth and archery feel like optional supplements to melee. Which is definitely the main way to play. I really love the game but this was not handled well. Group combat just boils down to backing up and countering

I can pull off combos and they're ok in 1v1. In group fights you are basically only backing up and master striking most of the time. A system that rewards more aggressive play would be nice. Maybe the option to have both light + heavy attacks on top of the directional combat. Or an extra move (kick/pommel strike) that opens up enemies if you land it perfectly. Decapitations/dismemberment would also be rad.

The best you may get is a halberd but that would be moronic to use out of formation. Same goes for the crossbow. Those are only practical as a large cohesive unit.
I'm no expert on the time period or location but a spear or crossbow doesn't seem that unlikely to me. Crossbows were pretty common for centuries in Europe and used for hunting as well. A spear or a pike doesn't seem that unlikely either. Granted a two handed axe is maybe a bit far fetched, they could add a poleaxe or something.

I actually found archery easy and bought a bow IRL. The only mods I got were the saving one and the lock picking simplified (which they later patched into the game).

I didn't, there is a pair of bracers (cuman bracers iirc) where part of the model pretty much points exactly where your arrow will land if you have issues with archery. Even without it it's pretty doable after some practice

You're not losing much, they all suck.
They are pretty good, but not as good as spamming master strike obviously. With a little practice you can chain them. They're definitely worth using to kill solo enemies faster
The 3-strike combo's are pretty doable, especially the ones that start with a stab. Try to start the combo when their sword is held in a different direction. Also the opponent is unlikely to counter after you win a clinch or masterstrike them, Thats a good time to try to pull them off. The 4 strike combos are really tricky but the 3 strike ones become easy after you get the hang of them
they become pointless at endgame, sadly, except the one that throws the enemy in the ground because it's broken, you can just clobber a dude as he's getting up
Being good at KCD combat is just doing the slow motion parry, then bonking people repeatedly on the head during the safe window after parrying.

Only started playing recently and I like the combat, but it has a lot of flaws which I hope they refine. Something like:

I played as a horse archer. Got a fast horse - Pegasus, I think - and went around shooting enemies in the face, then retreating and waiting for them to charge at me, then shooting them again. Over and over, until even the late-game plate-armored bandits fell after one or two shots.

The funny thing is that I didn't need Cuman armor for that build, because I rarely if ever got into a melee fight. So instead I went for a charisma/noble outfit. I lost the save years ago, but basically my setup, IIRC, was:

That's exactly my complaint, you can't do that shit in some camps because there's only one entry point due to the fricking placement of bushes that acts as impenetrable walls. That's what I did.
I finished the game without the bush removal mod, I literally did this with every camps, and those fricking bushes made life absolute cancer.
I redid the game after with their collision removed and it made the game instantly way more fun.
Not sure what you were doing wrong but I never had an issue when it came to stealth. I even did a no kill run on hardcore with every negative perk.

I do enjoy the game for its difficulty, and the fact it's closer to a RPG where you start as a nobody than every RPG who claim you're a nobody.
It also make cheesing very satisfying, I once tried killing everybody in Skallitz, left the place at level 5+ in almost every combat skills, wearing a set of cuman armor.
But the game isn't flawless, the combat system is clearly not intended to handle more than one opponent and it shits the bed really fast (I had 3 enemies run circle around me like they were playing musical chair, and I'm regularly forced to stare at my opponent's feet), and there's a few annoying bits like buggy quests (really wish I could see through the Monastery quest without it breaking) and a lack of small QoL.

I originally tried playing as a goodie two shoes who tried to not kill people or who only stole the thing he was requested, but one too many guard annoying me about torches while I was waiting, and I just started stabbing people when they inconvenienced me.

Custom/selectable protag would be dope. I've always wanted a game like this where you can play as a monk or priest. I'd also really like to see polearm use expanded, iirc you can't carry one with you pretty much at all which makes the game too centered around the sword, and more moves for both the polearms and mace would be cool. I really like how random encounters can happen during fast travel, but I thought they could actually be more frequent and maybe a little harder since once you get even just a plate cuirass bandits can't touch you. My fear is that they'll simplify the combat and/or add stupid fantasy enemies and glowing weapons and shit, or worse, skins for a first person game.
