As I remember it, Kingdom Hearts got a ton of girls to play it who had previously completely ignored Square rpgs. So I would say it's a big part of it's success. It made me never want to play the games, but I likely wouldn't have anyways.

Oh for frickin' sure, yeah, but not just the gameplay--the character designs, music and especially the visuals alone would've drown in a sizable amount of weeaboos. The Disney angle mostly appealed to girls (normalgay or otherwise) anyway, but in regards to KH1, I'd say the overall vibe wouldn't be as charming without it.

I think drown sounds better, same effect more visual cues.

Now that you mention it, it's pretty accurate as well as an apt comparison, especially considering this scene among other scenes.

It would've been a cult game instead. Like Okami. Everyone sees Okami as a great game, but it's still pretty niche and sold like shit of course

It's gonna be real interesting to see how the series fares without any of the Disney stuff. With the way the KH3 and Melody of Memories game ended it's strongly implied that Square is trying to move away from their partnership with Disney and disconnect the franchise.
I guess we'll see if the franchise has any staying power once the Disney content is pushed out completely, or at the very least pushed far into the background.

Can they even do that? I thought Disney had partial ownership over the entire brand.

I don't think Disney owns any of the OCs.
Disney technically didn't even fully own Tarzan when KH1 was released. They had to add extra copyright info for it in one of the splash screens, and it's why it's the only world that's omitted from Chain of Memories.

I'm pretty sure Disney fully owns the Kingdom Hearts IP. There were attempts to make a KH game without Square but those never went anywhere, and the legal wrangling to get Sora into Smash certainly attests to that non-FF KH characters belong to Disney.

Honestly, Kingdom Hearts always felt like someone trying to tell a comfy fantasy story to his kid but his kid kept wanting Disney characters in it.

I've been curious about this as well. I have a feeling it'll be kept on life support by diehard fans, mostly Millennial, just enough so the next line of games don't bomb. They won't sell gangbusters like KH3 did, thats for sure.

Would have been much better. I think it was their stupidest mistake to give it to Disney.

I was fricking hyped about it and loved it as a kid. I'll saw they handled it pretty well too - Disney gives a lot in the way of level design. If the party was stacked with SquareEnix characters, wouldn't have had the same appeal to most.

The first Kingdom Hearts is a Disney game through-and-through. Disney is part of this franchise's DNA and they'll probably never distance itself from Disney. The Light/Darkness aspects of the series are more Disney than they are FF, a franchise with no real identity. People associating the Nomura OCs with FF don't even seem to realize not only does he have more control over KH as an IP than he's ever had on FF, but he's only really directly had influence on FFVII, VIII and X at most. A lot of people say
    >The KHIII Ending looks like it's moving away from Disney
with a straight face despite base game KHIII featuring nothing but Disney Worlds until end game and not featuring a SINGLE Final Fantasy character until the DLC

The never ending argument of "which KH game will finally drop Disney" goes nowhere when the franchise is now over 20 years old. It's older than Super Mario Bros. was when it came out and it's still Disney

Did you not play Melody of Memories? Sora and Riku are currently stuck in some as of yet unknown dimension no one else knows how to get to.

Here's the ending if you want to sit through 15 minutes of exposition.

tl;dr: Riku chases after Sora into "a world beyond light and darkness" that none of the characters are capable of fathoming, and all the Disney characters are left behind. Yen Sid tells Mickey to stay put too. Kairi is cucked into the sidelines yet again lmao

I don't think the Disney stuff is disappearing completely, but I could see it being possible where you switch between playing Sora and Riku in some kind of Square Enix dimension and Kairi in the KH dimension.

Doubt it. There was some image compilation about it but basically it was similar posts saying KH was moving away from Disney after the secret ending in 2 and some of the later ones. Those cliffhangers never have Disney, likely because the team doesn't know if Disney will randomly decide SE can't use this character anymore but it was already used in the teaser.
At most they might move away from core Disney stuff and move more into their newer purchases like Marvel or Star Wars but it's still going to be Disney's show. I doubt SE even has enough liberty to downright skip over Disney if they felt like it.

a lot of people have soured on the disney aspect because they aren't really allowed to have much fun with it anymore. As is it's just a sightseeing billboard that has no real impact. The good moments are dwindling more and more with each game
