Another issue as to "why do none of the good translators go into translating literary works?" is because translating technical and legal information pays a huge amount more for a frickton less work. Technical translators can make into the six figures translating mere paragraphs of what is being said in multinational business meetings, while getting paid a pittance per word when having to translate dozens and dozens of pages for a Japanese game. It makes it worse that video games are still too new to be taken seriously as 'literary works.' Europe does have quality standards for those if you translate a fictional book or movie from French to German, for example. But not for translating a French game into the German language. And Japanese <-> (any other language) had never made standards at all because Japanese corporations do not give a frick about their non-Japanese fans.

That means you need to get the Japanese version of a game which may be more expensive or harder to get, or usually the single "global" version which means money is still going to localizers, and English-speaking discussion of the game will be about the localized version which means Japanese companies will continue to see that as the "English-speaking audience", which eventually leads to censoring things at the source because muh global sensibilities.
Game localization is harder to fix, but if it's on PC you can at least patch it. I'd honestly much rather buy and support the Japanese product and leave a review with my gripes.

Supporting AI translation is far worse than supporting the current level of localization quality. I understand and agree with the distaste for the modern need to "clean up" writing for western audience that so many official localization groups do, but if you want accurate translation, the answer is not AI/MTL that doesn't understand context, tone or nuance, all things extremely important to writing.
In fact, realistically, AI translation will only lead to more of this happening, as companies will simply have AI translate and then have a human proofread and edit - so you aren't actually removing the human step that introduces the potential for the political ideologies and meme speak that some localizers try to get into the work.
I understand you don't like the way some localizers act or do their work, but please, for the love of god, do not support mass use of MTL/AI translation. It'll be worse for everyone.

Like I said, the Nicalis version is way worse, but the freeware translation will make shit up sometimes or miss the subtext/joke. Characters will talk in the wrong tense, their speaking habits are ignored, etc. King often calls Toroko "Torokome" while she's frustrating him, which is a contraction of her name and "teme" as a nickname. AG translates this as "Blasted Toroko" exactly once, so him dropping it once she's kidnapped loses the intention. Nicalis never bothered at all.
The game is full of little mistakes and oversights. A lot of scene linking phrasing is missing. A lot of subtle hints are missing a word or two.
The red flower plot point is foreshadowed by Kazuma's line to Sue, displayed when you first enter Arthur's house, but both translations missed that his wienerroach eating comment is supposed to be thematically linked to the red flowers in the basement.

Localizers are fine in theory, they help make the writing sound less robotic and awkward. The problem is that the kind of people that want the position of localizer are usually people that want a power trip (see ) not people that are interested in making good translations. Another issue as to "why do none of the good translators go into translating literary works?" is because translating technical and legal information pays a huge amount more for a frickton less work. Technical translators can make into the six figures translating mere paragraphs of what is being said in multinational business meetings, while getting paid a pittance per word when having to translate dozens and dozens of pages for a Japanese game. It makes it worse that video games are still too new to be taken seriously as 'literary works.' Europe does have quality standards for those if you translate a fictional book or movie from French to German, for example. But not for translating a French game into the German language. And Japanese <-> (any other language) had never made standards at all because Japanese corporations do not give a frick about their non-Japanese fans.

I understand and agree with the distaste for the modern need to "clean up" writing for western audience that so many official localization groups do, but if you want accurate translation, the answer is not AI/MTL that doesn't understand context, tone or nuance, all things extremely important to writing.

Most contracts you get nowadays specifically require professionally trained attention for a variety of factors, mostly tied to demographics and context
Translators are likely the only ones worrying about it, while interpreters are the smartest of the bunch so they'll keep cruising as usual

What is wrong with the cave story translation? Do you have any examples? I only played the free version years ago but the dialog seemed fine to me.
Like I said, the Nicalis version is way worse, but the freeware translation will make shit up sometimes or miss the subtext/joke. Characters will talk in the wrong tense, their speaking habits are ignored, etc. King often calls Toroko "Torokome" while she's frustrating him, which is a contraction of her name and "teme" as a nickname. AG translates this as "Blasted Toroko" exactly once, so him dropping it once she's kidnapped loses the intention. Nicalis never bothered at all.
The game is full of little mistakes and oversights. A lot of scene linking phrasing is missing. A lot of subtle hints are missing a word or two.
The red flower plot point is foreshadowed by Kazuma's line to Sue, displayed when you first enter Arthur's house, but both translations missed that his wienerroach eating comment is supposed to be thematically linked to the red flowers in the basement.
