"Localizers" aren't writers. They're supposed to translate text as accurately as possible while only changing things when necessary (not everything can be translated exactly). The problem is that "localizers" try to be writers, and shove in whatever nonsense they feel like. They're the scum of the video game industry, and when AI makes machine translations perfect they'll be forced to flip burgers for a living, which is why I'm heavily pro-AI.

i don't disagree with the sentiment that localizations are better now than they were 20 years ago, but even then they come with their own host of issues with varying degrees of faithfulness to boot. see fire emblem and its localization woes since the gba. the main problem for me comes down to artistic integrity. sure, i can learn japanese and have been for a few years ever since i've heard about the atrocities committed against games in the localization process even after the 90s, even after fates, like gunvolt.
i'll admit that my japanese isn't good enough to truly appreciate raws, but even if it was, i'd still wish translation jobs only got better because, as nice as it would be for everyone to just learn the original language of every piece of media they consume, that's asking way too much even out of a society less moronic than the majority of english speaking audiences nowadays-- it's just not feasible, but they still deserve better in the name of artistic integrity alone. there are times where concessions have to be made, such as tomodachi life and shit like pokemon where the market at the time just wasn't ready for satoshi and his best friend lizardon, unlike now where normies would say jujutsu kaisen when it'd sound fricking ridiculous 30 years ago, but more often than not it's usually some smug failed author that can't help but put themselves aside for their job. i genuinely do think these games deserve more respect than to just play them for some smug sense of validation like you usually see in these threads

I want to note that English -> Japanese translations are often inaccurate and that's a whole world people are unaware of themselves. I think it's important to learn the raw just because we're accepting some degree of alteration by nature of these translations. You're kinda screwed either way if you're too accurate or too "Americanized" since there were many controversies in both directions. As long as you understand the nature of this dynamic then that's fine. Learning a language is hard but if you actually are even half-way fluent you operate in a completely different world than these tabloid culture war shitters.

Sonic Frontiers didn't have an AI translation. The Japanese script was written by the director Kimishima, and it has a lot of awkwardly written lines because he's never been a writer before and sucks at it.
Sadly they can stop it, and it's likely not coming at all.
They didn't get hired for their skill or their ability to deliver a quality product in the first place, they got hired because of the usual suspects throwing money at companies, like Blackrock and Sweetbaby.
Companies aren't just going to stop getting their free stock price bumps because AI exists.

Localization is a relic of the 20th century pre-global ecommerce days. It existed because foreigners had no way to do business in other countries so they would pay a LOCAL company to redistribute their products and edit it in ways that will allow the product to succeed in a foreign environment. In addition, they mention how prior it would take them 2.5 years to ever bother making an English translation. They didn't want to hire translators in the first place since the actual law is in Japanese, this just exists for convenience and they realized their 2.5 year language translations were out of date.

Not at all. The original script is the original script. If you talk to a Japanese person and played the same game in English, often the names are different, quests are different... Only way to avoid it is to learn the language. Rely on machine translation and you end up with the dog shit that was visual novel translations where people were mislead because they knew nothing about the original. Rely on corporate translations and they will be corporate friendly.
With all this being said, most modern translations are actually fine. In rare ocasions the translation is actually more accurate to the original than the Japanese dub and people still seethe. (sometimes the pipeline is Chinese -> Japanese/ English so both are lesser versions, sometimes the anime omits dialgoue from the manga because it is deemed problematic under the Japanese)
Instead of seething I just call a spade a spade. I have no right to b***h if I don't put the effort in. Until then I accept a version determined by a bunch of suits making pot shots over what's socially acceptable, because that is in part their job. If I disagree then I frick off.

That is true, and in OPs case, it is moronic, as that's not political, simply just a bad decision made by either the translator or the editor. But changes in translation are quite frequently happen because of political motives, and the topic of politics is getting more and more polarizing since people on the west can't think about anything else. Unfortunately, this is pretty much unavoidable, some people will defend it even if it's objectively bad, while others will attack it and cite unnecessary autism depending on which side they're on. You can't really discuss these things anywhere anymore, because rabid morons will start flinging their shit. But the worst thing is that people get outraged by changes like this, while the overall translation quality is often straight up just bad cause the translator has N3 and an ESL.

I do fan translations as a hobby. I lived in setagaya between 2009 and 2013 and I managed to survive so I believe I can say I know Japanese.
There is a sweet spot between keeping the original text intact and changing the sentence structure to something that is understandable in a different language. But the troonyslator uses this basic fact as an excuse to insert his own moronation into the original text.
Personally, I have never "changed" anything unless it was an untranslatable pun, to which I just used the closest possible replacement and added a note to explain the original text. I did not insert bane or reddit upvotes into the game.
The result is that I have been banned from every community handling fan translations and I have to work underground like bin laden. Just for refusing to change Japanese stores, celebrities etc. to american ones. make of that what you will

I'm not gonna claim to be anywhere close to fluent but even at my intermediate level in the language I simply don't care about the quality of English translations. Translators can ruin the game however they want, I play every Japanese game in Japanese or not at all so it doesn't affect me anymore.
It's not that it affects me personally, but it does affect the discourse around certain pieces of media, in which I inevitably participate in, unless I cut my internet cable. Otherwise, I simply feel like it is disrespectful towards the material and the fans as well. It's like rewriting classic books to be acceptable for modern audiences, for instance, the most recent translation of Homer has been dumbed down so bad that it doesn't even resemble to the original. It's the same issue. i don't disagree with the sentiment that localizations are better now than they were 20 years ago, but even then they come with their own host of issues with varying degrees of faithfulness to boot. see fire emblem and its localization woes since the gba. the main problem for me comes down to artistic integrity. sure, i can learn japanese and have been for a few years ever since i've heard about the atrocities committed against games in the localization process even after the 90s, even after fates, like gunvolt.

I want to note that English -> Japanese translations are often inaccurate and that's a whole world people are unaware of themselves. I think it's important to learn the raw just because we're accepting some degree of alteration by nature of these translations. You're kinda screwed either way if you're too accurate or too "Americanized" since there were many controversies in both directions. As long as you understand the nature of this dynamic then that's fine. Learning a language is hard but if you actually are even half-way fluent you operate in a completely different world than these tabloid culture war shitters.

Localization is a relic of the 20th century pre-global ecommerce days. It existed because foreigners had no way to do business in other countries so they would pay a LOCAL company to redistribute their products and edit it in ways that will allow the product to succeed in a foreign environment. Now we have digital releases so the entire industry of localization is pointless.
This is soulful though, the shitty dub also made the game at least 10 times better.

Not at all. The original script is the original script. If you talk to a Japanese person and played the same game in English, often the names are different, quests are different... Only way to avoid it is to learn the language. Rely on machine translation and you end up with the dog shit that was visual novel translations where people were mislead because they knew nothing about the original. Rely on corporate translations and they will be corporate friendly.
With all this being said, most modern translations are actually fine. In rare ocasions the translation is actually more accurate to the original than the Japanese dub and people still seethe. (sometimes the pipeline is Chinese -> Japanese/ English so both are lesser versions, sometimes the anime omits dialgoue from the manga because it is deemed problematic under the Japanese)
Instead of seething I just call a spade a spade. I have no right to b***h if I don't put the effort in. Until then I accept a version determined by a bunch of suits making pot shots over what's socially acceptable, because that is in part their job. If I disagree then I frick off.

Often times the Japanese version has internet speak that doesn't 1:1 translate, so the translator substitutes it with whatever they picked up from their social media bubble. Not evil, just debatable.

But changes in translation are quite frequently happen because of political motives, and the topic of politics is getting more and more polarizing since people on the west can't think about anything else. Unfortunately, this is pretty much unavoidable, some people will defend it even if it's objectively bad, while others will attack it and cite unnecessary autism depending on which side they're on. You can't really discuss these things anywhere anymore, because rabid morons will start flinging their shit. But the worst thing is that people get outraged by changes like this, while the overall translation quality is often straight up just bad cause the translator has N3 and an ESL.

I do fan translations as a hobby. I lived in setagaya between 2009 and 2013 and I managed to survive so I believe I can say I know Japanese.
There is a sweet spot between keeping the original text intact and changing the sentence structure to something that is understandable in a different language. But the troonyslator uses this basic fact as an excuse to insert his own moronation into the original text.
Personally, I have never "changed" anything unless it was an untranslatable pun, to which I just used the closest possible replacement and added a note to explain the original text. I did not insert bane or reddit upvotes into the game.
The result is that I have been banned from every community handling fan translations and I have to work underground like bin laden. Just for refusing to change Japanese stores, celebrities etc. to american ones. make of that what you will

I'm not gonna claim to be anywhere close to fluent but even at my intermediate level in the language I simply don't care about the quality of English translations. Translators can ruin the game however they want, I play every Japanese game in Japanese or not at all so it doesn't affect me anymore.
It's not that it affects me personally, but it does affect the discourse around certain pieces of media, in which I inevitably participate in, unless I cut my internet cable. Otherwise, I simply feel like it is disrespectful towards the material and the fans as well. It's like rewriting classic books to be acceptable for modern audiences, for instance, the most recent translation of Homer has been dumbed down so bad that it doesn't even resemble to the original. It's the same issue. But what I dislike the most is when they get smug about translating, or straight up lie that certain things couldn't be translated otherwise, I simply just find that pathetic and repulsive, they aren't more than grifters. To be fair, weebs can be moronic as well, they're often riled up by youtube hispanics and attack actually accurate translations because they have no idea or understanding about the original.

Translators back then were just straight up nationalistic in the sense they thought being identifiable Japanese would destroy sales figures, so they'd rewrite half the setting. The 1990s made current translators look like benevolent angels in comparison, this is not a hill you want to die on. Almost no games back then had story parity between the English and Japanese version. Most had to concede and merge the lore between both versions like 10 years later.
