      Anonymous

If the script could only be remembered through significant enough change and alteration, then maybe it shouldn't be worth remembering in the first place. By this logic, with the MGS1 translation you posted, does that also mean that all the story you loved that you thought was Kojima should actually go to the real auteur behind the work, a random translator?

You will never be a real writer. You have no novels, you have no screenplays, you have no bylines. You are a translator twisted by politics and anti-Japanese racism into a crude mockery of Nihon perfection.
All the “praise” you get is two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back people mock you. Your parents are disgusted and ashamed of you, your “fans” laugh at your ghoulish fanfiction behind twitter feeds.
Weebs are utterly repulsed by you. Tens of years of fansubs have allowed weebs to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even localizations that “pass” look uncanny and unnatural to a weeb. Your sentence structure is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a newbie reading you, he’ll turn tail and bolt the second he gets a whiff of your diseased, infected virtue-signalling.
You will never be happy. You wrench out a fake smile every single morning and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you under the unbearable weight.
Eventually it’ll be too much to bear – you’ll buy a rope, tie a noose, put it around your neck, and plunge into the cold abyss. Your parents will find you, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to live with the unbearable shame and disappointment. They’ll bury you with a headstone marked with your profession, and every passerby for the rest of eternity will know a localizer is buried there. Your body will decay and go back to the dust, and all that will remain of your legacy is a translation that is unmistakably Californian.
This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

I'm sorry, but no. Just because you were young and unable to read japanese or choose what content to consume doesn't suddenly make the whole thing okay. Did Zero Time Dilemma, the DR3 anime or the original Yakuza PS2 english dub suddenly become great just because people gathered collectively to shit on them by making memes?
The fact that they have become loved (ironically, I might add) in the west is irrelevant. If it was up to me these games would never have left japan to preserve their artistic integrity. These games were not localized out of some innate love for the industry, but simply because someone wanted to profit by bastardizing and butchering the original games to make them more palatable for non japanese audiences.

but it's counter productive to what localization is supposed to be because instead of making a setting more palatable for foreign audience, the localizers here created a fantasy setting that's even more foreign than the original which was just set in japan, no bells and whistles

It happens a lot. International fans of Xenoblade often get misled about the true meaning of Takahashi's works because the localizers butchered the translations. For example, in XCX they translated "Beyond the Logos; Artificial Destiny Emancipators" to "Builders of the Legacy After the Destruction of Earth", "Dolls" to "Skells", "Growth" to "Ganglion", and other such changes that remove the gnostic undertone of the work. In XC2 they changed literally God to "the Architect" and removed a lot of the religious undertones.

People in the West who don't look at the Japanese original works would have no idea that the entire Xenoblade Chronicles series has an underlying Gnosticism theme. All because of localizer shitlibs.

The setting was already foreign from the start even for it's intended country, the writer didn't know the japanese legal system when he started writing 1

I mean, he knew it was an aggressively ruthless system with an absurdly high conviction rate.
Hence the political commentary where you always have to catch who really did it to get a not guilty verdict because sometimes it feels like that's what it would take in real life too.

        Anonymous

Imo, it being a fantasy seting is actually more palatable than it just being japan, since it subconciously allows for a higher suspension of disbelief about the world around the characters
It is easier to digest Ace Attorney's weirder aspects since in your mind, you already know the setting's not meant to be realistic at all

                That depends on localization itself.

                Anonymous

Localizations, allegedly, exist to preserve authorial intent. Though in every instance of localization, the localizers have shown that they don't care about authorial intent and just want to insert their own shit writing. So if we need stilted translations to preserve authorial intent, so be it.

                Anonymous

The entire raison-d'être for localizations is to preserve author intent, rather than explicit literal translation. The point of localization over translation is to preserve the conversational mood intended by the author as well as any quips, jokes, idioms, references, or what have you by finding and using the colloquial equivalent or a close enough match in the target culture space.

Generative AI is actually incredibly powerful. It's not like Google Translate or DeepL anymore. If you trained a LLM on proper translations, it could easily translate quickly and accurately. The issue is if you start feeding it localizer dreck where the two scripts aren't even close that it'll start taking liberties with its translations.

You can point out that the framerate is chunky and not get any pushback. You can point out that the music is unmelodic and forgettable and not get any pushback. You can point out that the story has plotholes and not get any pushback. You can point out that the gameplay is janky and not get any pushback.

And yet, when you point out that the translation quality is poor you get screamed at by people complaining that you ever even brought it up.

He did say that line to Mia/Chihiro first.

It's supposed to be a line for himself that he later imparted to Chihiro hence "man", the original fits with his character much better

              Anonymous

Yes I know. Was arguing that the line was first delivered to a woman in the first place, it's obviously the author's original intent to have Godot say "man" in both cases.

Keeping the meaning open to apply to anyone doesnt stop it to applying to himself. It fits.
Is it the original words? No. And thats more what I want with the translations, but it does fit to use a phrase thst adresses both sexes to a man who's protégé is a woman.

Janet didn't just change the last joke, she somehow reworked the entire scene so that Apollo's the one making the comment about Trucy's small frame, not Athena.

Predict how pozzed the GS7 localization is going to be

I don't think it will be that blatant. Spirit of Justice still has plenty of jokes about Geiru's "balloons". It would probably be more subtle stuff. "Toxic masculinity" will get thrown in off-hand, or something like that.

Any localized version of this will be like all the others regardless of who does it from now on because outside of a few people on here, everyone else has been eating up Tranet's localization for years and has gaslit themselves into thinking a few pun names justifies it. I hate to break this to you morons, but Janet Hsu wasn't the one who chose the to set the games in America or change the names. Don't get me wrong, her translations are still shit, but she only began working on the series starting on the second game.
Ben Judd was the localizer for the first game, and he decided they would be set in America. And Alexander O. Smith was the translator who came up with all the new names like Phoenix Wright.

Also the third game was by another guy, Andrew Alfonso, who also did the fourth game, so really is was just the 2nd game then the 3DS ones by Tranet.
Also I'm pretty sure I saw something about how the original team or director was the one who suggested it change countries to begin with but I didn't look into that.

According to Alexander O. Smith, one of the reasons they chose America was because the First Turnabout references specific time zones.
        >Normally, what you do in a situation like that is leave [the location] vague. You just say, 'Hey, we're in Nowhere Land,' and you adapt the cultural references that will go over the heads of your audience. The specificity of the setting had to be made because there was an episode where this guy has some sort of clock his girlfriend gave him. It had to be set to some time zone, and we were like, 'Oh, crap. I guess we have to be specific about it.' So we just chose that without really thinking that much about it. And I know this has become an issue in later games, especially—the difficulty in selling where the game is set. The Japanese references have gotten layered on heavier and heavier and heavier.

Serious question, why has no-one used the ultimate ace card against these tools?
    >"Why are you destroying another person's work with your garbage?"
    >"Why are you pissing on Japanese (or whatever the source country is) art?"
That's my biggest issue with localizers anyway. When I play a Japanese game, I want the script translated as accurately as humanly possible. I want the original work but faithfully translated. I don't want some Twitter c**t's take on the story.

Many have tried. All are met with the same canned responses:
      >We have great respect for [insert culture], however as a [insert western country] company we cannot condone the promotion of [insert anti-progressive belief/imagery] in [current year]

        Then you reply with:
        >Why are you injecting current-day American views into another culture and it's art? Are you insinuating that your way is superior to theirs?
        >This is cultural imperialism and you should be fricking ashamed.

You just behaved autistically, like you do now, every time these issues were brought up without funny Dragon Isee shitposts. Nice way to out yourself as a newbie when this isn't the first time the questionable nature of the Gyakuten Saiban (excuse me, I meant Ace Attorney for your sensibilities) series has been discussed seriously on this board, instead of being tacitly endorsed/ironically accepted. Just remember the discussions surrounding 6-4 when SoJ just came out. Another surprise newsflash for you: it likely won't be the last time.
2 weeks from now, these threads will unfortunately be back to the status quo, giving you and all tasteless americans/westerners the "comfyness" you seek: a circlejerk full of denial born out of deliberately inaccurate translations, trampling on the original charming japanese writing this series is loved for in favor of a bastardized product with a contradicting sense of identity.

I think what makes me absolutely hate people like you is your blatant hypocrisy, calling people who enjoy japanese games weebs when you consume a worse version of the content. And yet, people like you are what devs in japan try to cater to. Fricking disgusting. I hope that one day you will learn to grow up and retrospectively look back at the destructive effects brought by your mindless consumption, all because your kind refuses to accept different cultures.

No one denies that people do take issue with how lines are handled for versions outside of the source material sometimes. Both in general and for this series. And that sometimes they do get a pass, for whatever reasons. But sometimes it's handled well enough, where people don't mind or prefer it. You can say that isn't right or ideal, and sure, I get it. But this series has long gone past the point to really course correct with it, so what we have is what it is.

Question to you Japanese purists gays:
If you were releasing Ace Attorney with no localization, how would deal with this line? The joke in Japanese about this guy's name is that the kanji reads: "small, medium, large".
Go on, tell me would translate this line without changing the literal meaning while also maintaining the pun.

I actually went through the first two cases side by side in ENG translation and original. I was inspired during my replay of Gyakuten Saiban 3 after beating 3-3, seeing the ending visual with chopsticks and wanting to see how they changed it as I didn't remember what it was, only to be met with in the youtube video I was watching the translator changing a normal line from the judge into an awful joke. I was expecting the translation to be awful but at least for the first two cases it's not bad. It's biggest crime if you ask me is fricking up Mayoi's/Maya's nickname for Wright. In Japanese she calls him Naruhodo-kun because that's what Mia/Chihiro calls him, and despite being a little weird to be called that as a 24 year old man from a 17 year old, Wright rolls with it as it's basically a memento from her deceased older sister. It's really cute and heartwarming. In the remake they just change this to her randomly making a nickname for you, which is more "gremlin" ish, which her translated personality leans into heavy. I'd be fine if Chihiro also had a nickname for you, but she doesn't in English, this entire exchange and meaning is gone.

I actually like this translation, Mr.White and 小中さん read about the same, both are punny and work well in each respective language. Though I will say most translation names miss the mark. Some stand out though, I think Miles Edgeworth is a killer name.

you don't want the player to be completely lost because they don't know multiple ways to spell the same japanese name, it's easier to solving the puzzle if it's just multiple ways to spell the same english name
