If they borrowed Fortnite assets instead of making those weird cross between chibi and fortnite models I think it would've been better received.
Yeah, the art style was absolutely the worst thing about it, if it looked even just generic and bland it would have done at least somewhat better
but it was kind of a bad concept from the start, the combat mechanics were neat but worked best for 1v1s which isn't suited for a battle royale, the balance was always a bit wack and promoted kind of unfun gameplay at the end of rounds, and most importantly it was trying to break into the absolutely saturated BR genre after its heyday with nowhere near the marketing budget of some of its competitors and unlike fighting games BRs need massive playerbases to survive, it had no real chance no matter how good a job the combat designers did
Kind of a shame, but I'd much rather get more KI stuff anyway so it all works out in the end

I felt like Rumbleverse was absolutely breasts. By itself, it was a fun little dynamic brawler that took unique advantage of 3D spaces, and I'd say it did pretty well to handle both dogpiles and duo fights instead of just 1v1s. Then, as a battle royale, it was the only one I actually liked a lot, because it avoided most of the problems I had with the genre: items gave you an edge but could be 100% mitigated by skill to avoid issues with RNG (even if in practice that was entirely unrealistic), and the map was incredibly fun to traverse, so you didn't have those stretches of boring open space that either put you to sleep or lead to an awkward shootout. Personally, I also wasn't turned off by the bad designs, but I can recognize it lead to its downfall, as no kid would want to pay for skins of greasy lanklets and fatsos--although I'd say the modular outfit system was also pretty good.
It's a shame it died, and I really do hope they revisit the concept to put out a more traditional arena fighter that uses the same core systems.

Max has stated that KI1 was the first competitive fighting game he was serious at as a kid. While I mashed out the SNES version, he had the strategy guide and went to a least one tournament for it.
Max's favorite series are KI and MvC and to a lesser extent SF because of third strike. He gravitates towards games that have at least some western influence even if they have some anime aesthetic to them. Anime players for some reason have this expectation that he should play their arcane weebshit 24/7 and when he doesn't they call him a fake fan of fighting games.

Iron Galaxy turned MS down before but circumstances have changed a lot. Iron Galaxy's main port studio and support duties the last few years have been on Bethesda and Activision games while Rumbleverse was a gigantic flop. They might figure that if MS is gonna buy their main clients for port duties, may as well sell up to MS. Especially now the Killer Instinct team feels like doing something more with KI

This is most definitely true. IIRC Keits had some closing development tweets about saying how he learned not to get too close to game development with the fans because he had to fight hard to hold back his rage towards them. I think he covers it alittle bit in the KI documentary.
It was kind of cool that they did a live patch demonstration at one of the tournaments though.
It's not that the fans were bad, it's just that it's obvious you can't go around deciding balance patches using randoms from the internet as equal partners in that decision. And? The whole point of the free trial edition is that you can say to your buddies "hey you can give this a try and play it with me without having to buy it." Any price tag removes the cornerstone of why it would otherwise be easier to get people to try it.
Sure, but the point of the trial was also to offer a theoretically lower cost pay what you use scheme, that they won't bother to reimplement (aka spend money and time developing) when 2 fighters is the cost of the entire game on sale. They would have to redo it from scratch which is what they'll probably do for the next game.

Balance patching the old game lets them get a run at a final balance patch to see what went right and went wrong and apply that knowledge to a new game. Keits already said they made Rash too strong in the final patch they did in 2018 because he was getting huge damage for less effort than other characters which they are going to address in the new patch, for example.
It will be interesting to see how Iron Galaxy approaches it because the last few years of play will have turned out very differently from their internal tier list.
Rash needs a nerf ASAP. Otherwise, Eagle and Kilgore could do with some touching up.

I never played this game and have no attachment to it but I just want to say that's really cool.

Why not just make a new game? MS abandoned the game a long time ago, its like trying to revive an old mining ghost town. You might get few tourist gawkers, but no one wants to live in a remote mountain town next to collapsing empty mineshafts. Are they hoping geriatric Max will carry it again?
Iron Galaxy pretty much said without saying it that new content is coming. It was obvious that a no disclosure act was in force, but they gave enough hints that more is to come than just quality of life updates.
I know, people are expecting the new Gears of War girl to be a fighter. But I can’t think of a dead GaaS getting dlc reviving after being in the ground for five years or more. I liked the game for the most part. Hisako was especially fun to play. It just seems like a doomed project.

Pretty sure they covered every spooky monster besides a Frankenstein character. So that could work.
I don't think they have to be monsters, but they haven't done a witch or slasher character yet. Personally, I'd like to see a skinwalker or wendigo.
During sales the game goes down to about 10 US dollars, so if a sale occurs before the update comes out, I say go for it.
They had a few on the drawing board for the last game and a potential Season 4 with a male vampire who played differently from Mira and a Wendigo (Which they used in the comic). They'd probably have some more that never got off the ground. Though from what it looks like, it might be a new game rather than a new season.
Now that Jago is more like a monk, it would be cool if he had a teenage follower who was a Japanese ninja and had his old KI1 design, stature and classic normals.

KI already has Arbiter(Halo), Raam from Gears, and one of the Battle Toads. People are theorizing about getting another Gears rep and a Doom Marine. Microsoft is weird about not wanting Master Chief in fighting games. DoA4 has some random female spartan. Maybe there is some clause that says Master Chief cannot be shown losing ever and respawns in the main series don’t count because, as far as the story is concerned, those deaths never happened.
Master Chief not being in DOA 4 or KI was the old management at Bungie then 343i being autismo about it. Even the Arbiter in KI is a "different Arbiter from a different time in history" because 343i said they couldn't use Arby from Halo 2/3, Thel 'Vadam. The moment Ross, O' Connor and other management were booted from 343i. Chief and Arby appeared in Ubi's Brawlhalla game as crossovers. So Microsoft's probably less restrictive these days about using the Chief now that 343i's management have had a big change.
The original combat designer for KI (and in game announcer) at Double Helix now even works at Microsoft as part of Zenimax Online. So MS would have a lot of people involved in the 2013 KI they could lean on if they were making a new game.

Doesn’t EA own that? I know MS owns Double Fine, but I’m not sure what IP goes where. Guess once the Activision stuff blows over they can go for EA next to get those rights back. Already have their gamepass deal, might as well finish it the rest of the way.
afaik EA only published it. And since Tim wants to do another one someday it would likely be Xbox published like Psychonauts 2.
I don't know if MS is gonna hound over EA as much, but I'd like to think they're next acquisition would be tied to the development of the next KI so like a Japan dev or something.
When witcher 3 got upgrades they raise the price of the game which make me regret not getting the game when it was going for like 8 bucks, should I get this game now before the upgrades?
