I'm playing wow right now on a low population classic server and still I'm encountering tons of people in every zone of every different level. Meanwhile I tried playing endwalker and I never saw a single other person in any of the new zones. I quit after the first dungeon because everything was so boring it felt like doing chores. Even the dungeons have zero difficulty to them.
and I played on a "high" pop server and saw 3 other people my entire time outside of a city

There's no issue. Tho in FFXI the first walk you do anywhere is dangerous. Maybe not that much in retail but still. In FFXIV anywhere you go you destroy everything in your path and the only way you die is if you afk in front of a monster for like a minute straight.
I remember playing FFXI for a month when I was a kid and never even making more than a couple zones away from my starting city. The world felt genuinely dangerous and difficult to explore. I wish I had stuck with it longer because it probably would have been an amazing game to play, but I didn't have the money to pay for a subscription and my parents didn't want to pay for it either. Nowadays it's probably impossible to recreate that feeling and that player base community again even if the game still exists.
There are private servers that try to recreate the old feel. Like Eden and Horizon

It's not really about just walking but about having adventures going to places and world design.
I'd say breath of the wild is an immensely boring game, but going places in that game is kind of an adventure on its own.

With MMORPGs you could do so much more than just gliding around and climbing and riding mounts. Using the lore of Final fantasy most of all, you can find a near infinite amount of stupid bullshit to explain why your ninja has infinite dashes or why the Warrior can knock down walls or why the Dark Knight can use his shadow to go to teleport a short distance.
But of course, Final fantasy XIV is not an MMO and not an RPG, so we can't have these things.
You get shitty WoW instances without the combat that makes WoW fun.
MMOs stopped being about the world like 15 years ago. Now it's all just progress quest and addiction mechanics. Gotta keep those subs up!
I came to XIV after sega ruined PSO2 so the only difference to me is theres worse customization and tab target instead of action combat, but I don't have to plan my life around urgent quests or deal with FOMO gacha customization items anymore so its a net positive in my eyes

2.0 everyone was in Mor Dhona and when Titan EX was the current progress, now THAT was fun times to shit post on /shout , the only other time we had that much fun was East Limsa due to Coil entrances and eventually Diadem (or w/e it was called before Bozja).
I really do hate instancing still. Shit is soulless just like Starfield, the obnoxious adventuring is what makes half the fun and the stories you tell later...
