Don't you have that backwards? The series was always linear in its level design, things opened up a bit with ODST and even more so with Reach, but you generally had to stick to a set path if you wanted to progress.
The open design of Infinite doesn't add anything worthwhile to the experience, especially when it just serves as padding from one corridor to the next.

Halo was literally always a series for dudebro mongoloids and children who didn't have access to a PC. The gameplay mechanics are unbelievably compromised to make it work on a controller. The story, art design and music are excellent but the entire gameplay is weak as frick and laid the foundations for shooters becoming what they are today. This board was better when Halogays were the most mocked and shunned group.
