They rapidly expanded the proliferation of social media, started an arms race of mobile technology that edged out many titans of the market until it was essentially down to Samsung and Apple, and then proceeded to pare down the features that made them worthwhile in the first place to the point that I'm seriously considering going back to a much cheaper phone and just carrying a shoulder bag with a proper camera, music player, and portable game console.

        Anonymous

        >then proceeded to pare down the features that made them worthwhile in the first place
like what? the headphone jack, I guess?

          Anonymous

The headphone jack, expandable memory, quick swap batteries, and probably some other more contentious stuff like non-AI driven cameras. Yeah, it can do a lot to improve crappy photos, but I'd rather have a high quality sensor and a good optic over that. All of the companies that made those with the exception of Sony have been pushed out of the market.

              Anonymous

Excepting for the fact that with the exception of quick swap batteries, I do still use all those functions daily with my LG V60. I can store hundreds of hours of hifi audio and video for my enjoyment on an easily removable microSD, listen to it on proper wired headphones that far eclipse the abilities of wireless buds, and snap solid pictures using a capable sensor that isn't bogged down with artificial software that gets in the way. In fact, the only weakness this phone has aside from the lack of removeable batteries is they ditched the optical zoom from the V50. LG bailing on the mobile market is a genuine loss for the industry.

Phones are finally at a point where even the cheapest budget shit has a 3000mah battery and you could just listen to music (Stored locally) for like 1% every hour played, dedicated music devices are mostly a novelty, not a useful feature, nowadays.
Dedicated gaming device and camera are pretty good, bonus points for most gaming devices that aren't just FPGA shit having support to also play music alongside your phone (video too). Even my shitty little rinky dink miyoo mini + can play my FLAC library. Can't drive any headphones that would be able to properly differentiate the quality but- side notes.

            >Can't drive any headphones that would be able to properly differentiate the quality but- side notes.
I just bring my bluetooth earbuds on the go. Definitely not the best sound quality but you can't beat the convenience when it barely takes up any space in my Steam Deck pouch. Trying to consolidate everything into one device is a moronic concept that I learned with gaming headsets so I'm really liking this setup I got right now.

I mean yeah I just use my $20 kz's and they work great and are super portable too, never have to charge them either.
I just don't like wireless earbuds, people always say "Well you can't really notice the latency" but I've heard that shit about bluetooth too, that shit feels like an eternity to me, it's wildly jarring and fricks my brain up when I try to watch any sort of video with wireless earbuds, and god forbid I try to play a game with a bluetooth controller (outside of specific range frequency receiver paired devices like playstation/xbone controllers on their dedicated devices of course), the almost 70ms of delay was something I would get banned for having in the mid 2000s, baffles me how people can play with that as a standard and say it's fine. Yuck.

Depends how entrenched you are in the Google ecosystem. At this point I'd say that if you're already using one or the other and use the relevant services those devices are designed around, it's too much of a hassle to switch. I'd personally recommend a renewed LG. I've got the V60 and its a hell of a phone. They're about 200 dollars on Amazon and this one has taken a beating and kept going despite me being a blue collar worker that's out in the field a lot.

        Anonymous

I am as divorced from any gay ecosystem as can be but I'm not opposed to trying out new stuff. just looking for something that'll last at the very least half a decade before having problems.

          Anonymous

Half a decade is unfortunately a tall order with how batteries degrade. Only phone I ever owned that lasted that long was the Galaxy Note 4. Used it until I couldn't source decent batteries anymore.

            Anonymous

People meme on it, but keeping charge capped to 80% will nearly triple the average lifespan. Considering most phones can readily last 3 years before their batteries hit 70% even at full cycling every day/night, it's a no brainer to do simple shit like don't leave your fricking phone plugged in overnight, set charge caps at 80 or 85%, and try not to let it discharge too much. 25%-80% charge on any battery in a phone made this decade is less than 1/3 a cycle, that is ENORMOUS gains for longevity, and that's not even accounting for how easy it's gotten to repair your own shit again. Heat gun, pry tool, pop pop cable clips, it's out. Drop the new one in, extracuriccularly put some adhesive in, and you're done, brand new batts. Unless you're on iphone then apple disabled 9/10 of your featureset as it's not "official apple hardware".

I've always been scared to try and bust open one of these new glued together devices, but maybe I should give it a shot.

                Anonymous

Buy a bricked phone with a broken screen, I'd recommend an older model. Good ones to practice on would be the S20/+/FE for flat screens, note10/+ for curved displays (there's a bit of a curve, hyuck hyuck, to raising curved displays off the body without fricking everything up).
Most phones are copying either the apple metal design, or the sammy snug glass on glass, so if you practice on them, you'll have a good idea of how to do most phones (obviously, using ifixit for handling the internals after removing the display which is inarguably the hardest part on any phone)
