If mounting a comeback isn't just as fun as playing super well, then your game simply is not well made. This extends to many stealth games as well.

maybe we should be able to rewind anything.

They did it because people get frustrated when one poor turn on the last lap killed their otherwise earned podium because the dogshit rubberband essentially makes it where only that lap matters and you have to perfect that lap when you can drive like dogshit with no consequences on any other lap. Instead of fixing that they just slap an undo while the root problem is still there.

Redoing a 3 minute race isn't a big deal, but realizing that 2/3rds of all the time you spent racing will not affect the outcome in any way is a bit of a big deal. Why is that time even spent there if it's pointless?

Yes, casuals and normalgays hate that, and they are the ones that buy games.

      >dogshit rubberband
Kind of true. Rubber banding is the other thing that killed racing games. If your AI needs to cheat to beat players, maybe you should work on improving your AI instead of making it cheat to give the illusion of competitiveness

        Anonymous

        Here's the problem:
In order to not have rubber banding you need to code an AI that is good enough to not get left behind in a race with the player but not so good the player can't beat them. And remember, you have to code this AI for the "normal" difficulty, meaning that you have to keep in mind the average player. Rubberbanding is a corrective mechanic, it allows for a greater range of skill level to be challenged by a single difficulty setting. Without it, you'll end up with far more complaints about how the AI is fricking trash and gets lapped, or how the AI is fricking broken and impossible to beat, over complaints about rubber banding.

Every other genre has figured out how to make games that are balanced. I don't see why racers can't.
It's especially silly because racers inherrently have analogue scoring. Just make the racers have different skill levels and have players be competitive for whatever range they end up in.

      >dogshit rubberband essentially makes it where only that lap matters
I've played every FH from 2 to 5 and FM from 4 to 7 all on the highest difficulty including tons of those long endurance races and this isn't really true. If you're consistently fast you will beat the AI not just on the last lap. They like to cheat but it's usually when they're already ahead, once you get past them you will stay past them unless you frick up somewhere. It's kind of the opposite of a normal racing game where they're slow until you pass them then they start cheating to get a place back.

it would be like dark souls adding a bethesda save system to their games.
the risk of dying and losing your shit and having to retrace your steps is what makes the game so tense.
if you just put in tools to make the game baby mode of course everyone is going to use it.

Single player racing games have been ruined by rubberbanding from the very start, rewind is irrelevant.

        Backtracking isn't fun.
        >risk of loss drives tension
You already lost something to be in that situation. The same could be said about dying at all anyway.
        >the greater difficulty of recovering your loss makes it fun
What if you just stayed low power and challenged yourself instead of gearing up and having to die to not be bored? Ever thought of that?
Revisiting areas you previously conquered should feel rewarding, not a walk of shame as you scurry past it in a hurry to get to your corpse.
I don't really see the connection to a literal undo button, but you are wrong about muh hardcords = better.

rewind feature is fricking gay and I found it disgusting when they introduced it into forza.
I know people who are so bad at racing games they have the driving line on with all the assists and they still frick up and use the rewind.

It's a good feature given the imprecision of using thumbstick input, and the sometime wacky actions by racing AI.

The biggest problem with racing games is the lack of anything outside of just doing races. Racing is fun, but where's my Forza or GT with a strategic layer where I'm managing a racing team in some sort of league. I'm not much of a fan of F1, but I think that's the main reason I've gone back to those games so many times in the last several years. It's fun to build up your racing team through the seasons, and gives context to grinding out races.
