The game measured various player performance metrics including accuracy and jump precision, bhopping, etc and put players in ranks according to these real stats, separating them by actual abilities and not fricking ELO that can be abused forever in an online setting with free new accounts

Dota has plenty of options for player performance benchmarks and data collection, anything from K/D to class->purpose effectiveness, like if you play support with healing abilities it should put high priority on healing done in match, etc and then compare that data against other support-healer players. They can afford to do this, they just don't feel like it's important to do because vatBlack folk (the primary target audience) live off endless abuse
