Sonic 1 is a better game. Better levels, much better music. 2 is like the prototype version of 3&K and is only liked because it was the first Sonic game for many.
I'm here to say it. Sonic 2 is the only good 2D sonic game. 1 is terrible, 3 is okay, mania was worse than 4. In fairness I've never played CD, so I can't comment on it.
Good level followed up by utter shit level throughout the entire game, insistence on shit platforming sections, terrible final boss, 3 act structure, take your pick. If it didn’t have green hill zone and instead started it with marble garden, Sonic would be just another in a line of forgotten animal mascots in shit games (which would never have existed anyway because sonic kicked off this trend anyway).
I will get hate for this but I simply don't like Mania. It made the levels drag on too long with the added verticality and mini boss at the end of each and said bosses could be a real chore with their super armor. Teleporting between different game's zones felt jarring too.
It just sucks compared to 3K

Yeah I can agree with that. I like the Knuckles part but zones like Sandopolis are a slog. Superstars is looking like what Mania should have been I just hope it has good level design and pacing

It's not like there was even a point to these abilities, each level features some obligatory "secret" ledge only Knuckles could reach with 1up or something equally worrhless and that's it. Gliding is dogshit and doesn't replace the loss of spheres

There's a subtlety to classic Sonic games that the ADHD generation are incapable of appreciating. Actually go back and play Sonic - you'll often find that only a fraction of a level is actually uninterrupted speed-ramps and open lanes - water sections, bumpers knocking you backwards, moving platforms, there's plenty of pauses. Sonic is a platformer, it's a game of agility and precision more than pushing right to win. Speed is your reward for skilfully stringing together multiple uninterrupted manoeuvres, it's never the default state.

Sonic 1 doesn't have enemies throwing projectiles frame 1 of being on screen or springs that just randomly throw you into hazards with no warning.
Instead Sonic 1 has nearly every zone after Green Hill being anti fun
