Kotor 1 for gameplay
Kotor 2 for everythings else (though music is slightly lesser than Kotor 1)
I remember KOTOR 2 mostly for the story and writing stuff. Aside from that I remember Dxun, Peragus, nar shadaa hunt
But with KOTOR I feel like there's a better overarching adventure. Every planet feels fleshed out and nice with memorable things.
rpgs peaked with KOTOR 1. great blend of gameplay and story while making neither a slog or tedious. RPGs after kotor go too far into being an action game or too far into being a visual novel,

Kotor 2 is an exceptional game. Loved the development of Kreia’s character. Sadly, we’ll never have a Star Wars game like this again.
I can't decide between the two. I like KOTOR 2 a hell of a lot. But I have seriously never ever played an RPG that felt as complete and polished as KOTOR 1.
I played the kotor games without ever seeing any of the movies. to be honest the fact that they're associated with star wars is a shame.

I hate Star Wars but love KOTOR and I definitely find it irritating when people assume I'm a huge Star Wars nerd when I bring it up

Kotor 1. It's a finished game and isn't trying to be more than it can be. The game is better balanced because it doesn't go to level fricking 30+ with its batshit power scaling, the party members are actually likable and not every one has a moronic sob story like in Kotor 2.
The slog parts are Dantooine and... that's about it. Taris is interesting in every level and has variety all over the place including in enemies, the Endar Spire is over in 2 minutes. The remaining planets are good.
Meanwhile Kotor 2 has boring slog parts all over the place, including Peragus AND both parts of Telos back to back.
On replay, the party members of kotor 2 is way weaker than I remember. Also not being able to dismiss them at any time is really pronounced in kotor 2 when it seems like their justifications to follow you and your tolerance of their presence are weaker
KOTOR 2 has too many characters that just go 'im not going to say a fricking word to you for the entire rest of the fricking game unless you have me in your party and say the right things to some random group of missable people despite not even being able to talk to me enough to know what i would agree with you doing and then remember to talk to me after you do that'

kotor 2 on the otherhand is obnoxious and can't hold a candle to its predecessor.

KOTOR 2 is more interesting overall to me. My favorite planet is the Mandalorian one where it rains when you land. Now when you get to the later parts, it feels unfinished even with the restored content mod, but what can you do.

It's not good. Neither is the last planet in the base game. Empty rooms full of same enemies.

I think the real important question that needs to be asked is, "which was worse Taris or Peragus?"
I would say Peragus, Taris at least had things that you could do; battle arena, gambling, bounty hunting, swoop racing. Peragus is just a boring slog the whole way through.

Peragus was an awful way to start KOTOR 2.

Both of them are fine. In 2 you at least don't have to worry about not leveling up.
Taris is the good one, Peragus is painful on replay. Taris has tons of things to do, variance in enemies, sides in a faction war you can take, the environments you travel to actually look different from each other, and you have to figure it all out without jedi powers.
Conserving your levels was meaningless in 1 too, you gain a ton of bonus force points for being the main character and can learn enough force powers for your class whether you leave at level 2 or level 7. Scoundrel players were even enhancing their jedi class by gaining Sneak Attack levels, which the jedi classes don't have.
