I'm semi-interested in starcraft but I still have trouble understanding it. Like I don't full grasp how you can consistnetly win or get good or what separates a good player vs a bad player besides build knowledge and apm/execution

Because those are boring aspects of the game. What i'm saying is beyond that, when you have 2 people who pretty much have matching knowledge and execution, how do they try to beat each other? I've watched a bunch of random artosiscasts and it feels to me that, when it's not an issue of one player maybe having poorer or better execution in a fight that gets them ahead enough to steam roll that it's like they're randomly choosing strategies and then deciding how to change those strategies and idk I just don't grasp how people try to win at a high enough level.
I come from a fighting game background which is similarly a game more about beating the mind of your opponent and there's a bunch of micro-decisions that directly affect all of your future actions and decisions as you try to figure your opponents next move but in that type of game, it's fast paced so it's not as often that a small mistake earlier can almost completely doom your round as a loss and there's always a way to come back. Trying to understand starcraft, it feels like you just kind of randomly pick a strategy for the match up, and try to scout well but if your opponent just so happens to be countering that build and you frick up your scouting to where you don't know they're countering it then you're just fricked most of the time? idk. I feel like I need a full, slow break down of full matches to get a better grasp of what makes starcraft tick compared to other competitive games beyond the immense knowledge and execution aspect.
There is no perfect execution in broodwar. It's not physically possible once the game passes a certain point.
There is quite a lot of reactivity in their play but I think they're on a larger scale than they are in fighting games.

APM is a meme, especially in SCI where you don't have annoying micro busy-work like those fricking MULES to worry about. What you really want to be able to do is know the counters to specific strats and be able to go to them without panicking.
It's strategy + execution
a good player always knows what to do. bad players don't know what they should be doing, or worse, don't know that they should be doing something at all.

Long time BW watcher here. I've been a fan of soulkey since Remastered came out when he was probably the best Zerg for the first three years or so. He's been in the finals many times with no wins. However, he always lost to Flash. I believe that even if he wins this ASL, he still needs to best Flash in a tournament.
Mini looked like he didn't have much of a plan this game, and certainly no plan b.

No. I thought he was pretty shaky this tournament. When I saw the semis I was convinced mini was going to roll him. Mini was solid as frick, while SK was struggling. Either mini just had a bad day and SK had a good one. Or soulkey was just hungry (heh) for the win and grinded hard.
