Most people like some funny or tasteful fanservice here and there but Falcom has overdone it so much their sales all but collapsed in Japan

Can't be. The first game that really ramped up the fan service was Ao no Kiseki and that's one of the biggest selling Trails games in Japan.
I loved 8, is 9 just as good? Story and character wise, of course. I already know the combat is better.
i haven't played 9 yet, but from the reactions i've seen here, it seems 9 is more of the same gameplay with minor add ons and with a more monotous background.
IX is mostly a step down. The main cast is good and the dungeons fun, but the pacing is kind of schizophrenic with how it constantly flip-flops between fast-paced action and Trails-esque exposition dumps and npc interactions.
If you like 8 you will like 9. Though I still prefer 8 since the island exploration every chapter was more interesting to me over unlocking new districts in the city.
