I uninstalled my pre-load last night after remembering that Spider-Man took me longer to unpack then to download it. I shower and have a coffee after work so I'll just get it going again before I do those.
I'm enjoying it so far. I'll always give Ryuusuke Horii credit for having a good eye for the series' juxaposition for dead seriousness being applied to the outlandish, which I know sounds really english major-y but the guy wrote Baka Mitai. There's a reason the photo the song focuses on near the end is usually something ridiculous considering the song's subject matter. I think he's overall a good director for the series.
So any flaws in the game's tone, I won't blame on him considering he generally nails it. It'll probably be the writer at fault.
It took me a second to remember I can't control the camera with the shoulder buttons without remapping it, but then I remembered you only have to tap A to dash and not hold it so one thumb on movement, the other on camera isn't a big deal.
As much as I want to say "play every game in release order", you could've gotten away with playing 7 first because the MC was in prison for the events of 1-6 so he's just as much out of the loop as the player would be. 8 however is a direct sequel to 7 and expects you to have played 7.
It's "fine". It's Sega we're talking about so they have a lot more experience putting games on PC than most japanese companies. I haven't really had any issues, but I'm only playing at 60 so maybe that's not a good benchmark for it.

Because I don't care to play through like 6 old games, plus Gaiden. I played 0 simply for late 80's setting, and played 7 because the turn-based, and fresh start with a new character appealed to me. Absolutely loved it.
I know, I just wanted you to know that the devs acknowledged the turn-based style and wacky narrative of Ichiban as the better of the two. Many of us don't want to play button-mashing bullshit.

Doing the unexpected to make a narrative point very rarely goes well, like Tasha Yar's death in TNG. There is no actual good writing in videogames. No, I'm completely serious, and I'm not just being a pretentious Gankergay here. The interactive nature of videogames means it will always get in the way of telling the story the writer WANTS to tell without just outright making it VN levels of railroading.
Think about it, what are considered the best-written stories in vidya? Usually Avellone stuff like Kotor 2 or Planescape Torment? These stories could not hold a candle to the likes of Dostoevsky or Dumas. Vidya writing rarely ever breaks beyond the conflict types of "man vs fate" or "man vs society", I've yet to see a videogame truly tackle something like "man vs self" on anything more than the surface level. They aren't saying anything profound about the human condition, they aren't truly reflecting on the nature of man in a way that contains genuine philosophy. They're genre fiction, pure and simple. Videogames will never have its Ulysses because that kind of narrative is unsuited for the medium.

And they're right, but more because of the audience than because of anything about the medium. Players don't want an ending where losing is winning, they don't feel a sense of accomplishment where becoming a martyr saves everyone.

From my knowledge, the only game that actively detects greenluma and creamapi is Dead by Daylight.
Payday 2 detected it only if you were on online sessions and they'd slap you with a cheater tag. Playing offline didn't do anything though.

I'm enjoying it so far. I'll always give Ryuusuke Horii credit for having a good eye for the series' juxaposition for dead seriousness being applied to the outlandish, which I know sounds really english major-y but the guy wrote Baka Mitai. There's a reason the photo the song focuses on near the end is usually something ridiculous considering the song's subject matter. I think he's overall a good director for the series.
So any flaws in the game's tone, I won't blame on him considering he generally nails it. It'll probably be the writer at fault.
I can't really put it into words but the camera moves different, its weird.
It took me a second to remember I can't control the camera with the shoulder buttons without remapping it, but then I remembered you only have to tap A to dash and not hold it so one thumb on movement, the other on camera isn't a big deal.

As much as I want to say "play every game in release order", you could've gotten away with playing 7 first because the MC was in prison for the events of 1-6 so he's just as much out of the loop as the player would be. 8 however is a direct sequel to 7 and expects you to have played 7.

There is no actual good writing in videogames. No, I'm completely serious, and I'm not just being a pretentious Gankergay here. The interactive nature of videogames means it will always get in the way of telling the story the writer WANTS to tell without just outright making it VN levels of railroading.
Think about it, what are considered the best-written stories in vidya? Usually Avellone stuff like Kotor 2 or Planescape Torment? These stories could not hold a candle to the likes of Dostoevsky or Dumas. Vidya writing rarely ever breaks beyond the conflict types of "man vs fate" or "man vs society", I've yet to see a videogame truly tackle something like "man vs self" on anything more than the surface level. They aren't saying anything profound about the human condition, they aren't truly reflecting on the nature of man in a way that contains genuine philosophy. They're genre fiction, pure and simple. Videogames will never have its Ulysses because that kind of narrative is unsuited for the medium.
As I've said multiple times before, RGG is not a hard-boiled realistic crime drama. It's a hypermasculine soap opera meant to string your interest and attention along in order to wind up at a wishy washy message about the Japanese legal system or the police or Alzheimers or bullying. It's also a fujo series, and anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves.

I don't think it's a big deal, there are prob some throwback things that won't be apparent, but otherwise I plan to just play the game as if I'm Ichiban; he doesn't know everything that happens with Kiryu either, and if he does it will be because Kiryu infodumps it onto him at some point in 8.

You forgot to mention that despite the fact the final boss hates the Yakuza, most of his crime group is literally comprised of ex-Yakuza members, especially Tojo and Omni guys that Kiryu and the others beat up during the dissolutionin in Gaiden.
