>high fantasy >no real statbars aside from mp and hp >stats are hidden but do change at certain points throughout the games(such as strength, attack, some games speed, etc) >character growth and advancement >PLAY the ROLE of zelda
I mean it's not a pure D&D style RPG but no action RPG is unless every attack is based on a diceroll. So like Morrowind, RPG, Oblivion, not an RPG.
Landstalker is exactly the same, you couldn't argue one being an RPG without also including the other
Yeah I should have noted it's also not an action rpg but was lazy because I don't care and there's a good bet he made the thread as a troll on the terms anyway
>Fantasy world >HP >Hidden stats up the ass >You obtain caps, collectables and shit, so there's growth and advancement >You PLAY the ROLE of someone else
Mario 64 is an RPG
HP stays the same the entire game, you mever gain more, you don't obtain caps, you have select places where you can use them. It's not like Zelda where a feather is basically a levitate spell, the red cap in mario is like getting in a helicopter and flying it around til you run out of fuel.
Morrowind is based on a dice roll, fricking zoomer moron. You’re not smart enough to have an opinion on this subject.
Disregard this, I misread your post. My apologies, though oblivion is an arpg and there is no way you can prove it’s not an arpg. Strange argument.
I'm saying that Oblivion is an ARPG without the diceroll in case anyone tries to say Zelda isn't an ARPG without one.
>You need MP to be a RPG >Implying most games don't have a form of hit points
Platformers don't, at least the ones that defined the genre. Adventure games don't, most don't have a health system. And those games have a cap you start the game with, Zeldas start with between 6-12 hp maximum and can end up being in the 100s; and some games have things that increase your DR 200% effectively doubling your HP.
>play the role of Zelda
What the frick did I just read? Get out and never come back.
Lol my bad.
It's an old troll line. He's basically just trying to bait people unfamiliar, when he used the term it was 100% that's what the thread was made for.
ARPG is arguable, it at least has some ARPG elements. More like proto sidescroll exploreathon with ARPG elements. SotN is an ARPG, it has shop keepers. Also Link and Alucard can change out their swords.
Zelda and other action-adventures were listed in the RPG sections of popular vidya magazines when they came out. The genre definitions weren't set until later. Since this is a retro board, it should be understood without having to autistically point out the difference.
I am a literal zoomer and I played and beat Landstalker before ever even seeing a screenshot of ALttP.
I grew up with a GBA but my family bought a scalped Wii second-hand that came with loads of based virtual console games like Startropics, Pulseman, Splatterhouse, Phantasy Star II, Wave Race, etc
Landstalker >better story >better/bigger brain puzzles >bigger world map >more interesting dungeons >better written dialogue >sense of humor >more town NPCs >more optional/hidden stuff >longer game >more detailed sprites & maps >more than 3 good songs
The only ones who would pick Zelda are the ones who never played Landstalker for more than 5 minutes.
Some of the jumping challenges are literal bullshit though. Not necessarily because of the isometric view since Alundra can also suffer from that and that is pure topdown
Zelda is Action Adventure, not an RPG. This has been rehashed countless times.

>high fantasy
Not a prerequisite
>PLAY the ROLE
Then every game with a controllable protag is an RPG you homosexual.
God this place is fricking dumb
>every game has a hp and mp bar
>You need MP to be a RPG

Mario 64 is an RPG
you don't increase your stats in mario 64, either from xp or via item progression. checkmate atheists
HP stays the same the entire game, you mever gain more, you don't obtain caps, you have select places where you can use them. It's not like Zelda where a feather is basically a levitate spell, the red cap in mario is like getting in a helicopter and flying it around til you run out of fuel.

I didn't make the thread.
Ok
Super Metroid is an RPG
"No."
ARPG is arguable, it at least has some ARPG elements. More like proto sidescroll exploreathon with ARPG elements. SotN is an ARPG, it has shop keepers. Also Link and Alucard can change out their swords.
>Super Metroid is an RPG
In your dreams, Jarpiggy.
Morrowind is based on a dice roll, fricking zoomer moron. You’re not smart enough to have an opinion on this subject.

No.
Landstaker
>which one was the best 16-bit action-rpg?
neither.
Dawn of Ys on pc engine
side note, i never liked 2D zelda much. its one of those series thats vastly better in 3D
Surprised LandStalker and not Oasis, I've heard Dungeon Explorer and the Ys games on TurboGrafx-CD are good as well
no one actually likes landstalker, theres just not much competition on the system
ladystalker is the snes sequel and absolutely no one talks about it. that should tell you something
>no one actually likes landstalker
I am a literal zoomer and I played and beat Landstalker before ever even seeing a screenshot of ALttP.

Lady Stalker was never released outside of Japan. It's also not a sequel and doesn't even play the same way. Congrats on being a literal moron.
Probably pic related
Landstalker isn't even the best action rpg on the Genesis, let alone a Zelda competitor
It's Gunple: Gunmans Proof
Neither? Secret of Evermore is better than both and Soul Blazer is better than SoE
Landstalker
>better story
>better/bigger brain puzzles
>bigger world map
>more interesting dungeons
>better written dialogue
>sense of humor
>more town NPCs
>more optional/hidden stuff
>longer game
>more detailed sprites & maps

I pick Zelda and I've never played Landstalker at all.
>more optional/hidden stuff
pools closed due to MAIDS
>Isometshit
Dropped
>filtered
I hated the "camera" in Landstalker
Some of the jumping challenges are literal bullshit though. Not necessarily because of the isometric view since Alundra can also suffer from that and that is pure topdown
It would have been a good fit for 3DS.
The isometric perspective gets on my nerves.
I would rather play Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis instead
I love how the easiest way to trigger a zoomer is to rightfully call Zelda an RPG like it's always been.
Nah not even Z2 is an RPG. I'm 40
I am almost 50. No one who knew what an RPG was ever called Zelda one.
>RPCringer
it's in their economical interest to call Zelda an RPG.
Yeah, it would be in their best interest to make sure all the information on their website is accurate.
The text at the bottom says "3D Action RPG"
LTTP is better than Landstalker, but Beyond Oasis is better than both
Landstalker's world feels way more detailed and alive. Mercator alone absolutely mogs any of the towns in ALttP. The difference is staggering.
Barely anyone ever brings up Landstalker, which says a lot to me, so I'll go with Zelda
