I was enjoying the first tomb raider with tombati, great game, comfy exploration, awesome platforming and acrobatic combat, then my game stopped working. Everytime I tried launching, a little window would open and immediately close.
Later I found out the issue was my wireless headset was off - if it is off, the game doesn't launch. That was the weirdest bug I've seem in games.

Getting the first 3 or 4 games to work right on steam is to much of a hassle so I just emulated the PS1 versions instead and used duckstations overclock setting to make the games run at more consistent frame rate.

Tomb Raider is a PS1 franchise. Its supposed to be played with a PlayStation controller.
It was on PC from the start... and since you're playing it on PC, you're supposed to play it with the keyboard.
It's as simple as downloading a community made patch and dragging the files over to your copy of the game, i don't know what you mean by "hassle"
A lot of older games are like this too not just TR, the most difficult one i had to do was NFS Porsche Unleashed and even then it was as simple as downloading Nglide and pressing 2 buttons.
The 1st one works fine with this community fix yes. But 2 and 3 dont have this easy solution. 1 worked fine with ps4 controller for me but 2 and 3 didn't.

Eh, the technical aspect of the game is a disaster but it unironically has a lot of charm, especially Lara - she is beyond adorable in the game. The stealth section with the laser grid during the museum is kino.

The only games in this franchise that I actually finished were Tomb Raider 1, TR2013 and its 2 sequels. I played most of them at release but never really finished them. Like I played frick loads of TR2 and 3 on PS1 as a kid but never beat them.

How hard are the classic games to get into? Should I start with the first or is it too clunky?
It's a decent challenge but kids could complete levels back in the 90's, you can too.
First is the easiest,
2 is easy too level design wise but way more enemies in numbers per level and harder than 1.
3 just hates you and will try to kill you in every way possible.
You need to get comfortable with the controls. All the classics 1-5 play the same.
Start with the first, if too clunky for you skip to The Last Revelation.
