Larian founder: 'this is videogames, standards just die every day'

/OURGUY/ SVEN showing those lazy chud devs how EVERYBODY can make GOOD VIDYA!

>"In an era of megagames, Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the largest attempted, built by a specialized group of people using mature tech specially built to make *this specific game*, reinforced by invaluable mass player feedback AND market validation ahead of its launch," wrote Nelson. "This is not a new baseline for RPGs—this is an anomaly. Trying to do the same thing in the same way, especially without the same advantages, could kill an entire GROUP of studios."

>Responding to the thread, Obsidian designer Josh Sawyer agreed that "the conditions under which BG3 was made are atypical," as did Diablo 4 senior designer Chris Balser, who said that "people too often only look at the fruits of labour and not the labour itself." On the flipside, a lot of gamers read these cautions against rising expectations as defensive. Why not expect more from RPGs after a developer has successfully pushed the genre's boundaries in a direction we like?

>"The problem I have is with the use of the word 'standards,'" Vincke said. "This is videogames, standards just die every day. Things get reinvented. New things appear all the time. When I was starting out in the industry, Assassin's Creed set the new standard. It was over—nobody could make games like Assassin's Creed, there was too much budget behind it, that was going to be the future, everybody had to consolidate, blah blah blah. That didn't materialize. In videogames there's so much free space to explore, still, in the creative tree."

    >To the extent that standards do exist, Vincke found it "strange" that developers from larger studios would be concerned about boundary-pushing, pointing specifically to the new creative possibilities that technological advancements can enable. As for RPGs in particular, he noted that it doesn't take an enormous game like Baldur's Gate 3 to change the genre.

    >"Disco Elysium changed standards on the fly with a small team, right?" said Vincke. "That's a completely different standard now. There are so many games that change standards, to the point that there's no standards, was my thing. But I think you should always strive to evolve, especially in this medium which is different than other media in the sense that technological evolution has always been a big part of it. There's always been innovation, but at the same time, it doesn't require massive technological evolution to do something crazy, and cool, and different than what anybody else has done before."

industry standard is to spend 5+ years developing a game that's unplayable at launch, has the same boring mechanics as every other successful game, has the mobile tiles UI, filled with microtransactions and season passes, tons of cutscenes and hidden cutscenes and is written by the most unfunny redditors imaginable.

When you realize hacks like sawyer and balser are offering this half-baked praise and full on dismissal of a game which took more effort than everything they've put out in 15 years - it's to defend their jobs. They love their cushy "oh I'm making the same game again? for the 6th time?" approach to design. They are lazy and don't want to be challenged and will casually dismiss the efforts of those who actually do something that took a modicum of effort.

The western industry is poisoned by lazy slugs who don't wish to do anything interesting any more. They get paid for the bare minimum and now that they literally work for microsoft in some weird subsidiary situation, who famously bails out studios in constant free fail for over a decade why try to spoil that? They're getting paid the big bucks to sit on their ass basically. Game devs are paid A LOT too. Way more than they deserve for the work they put out.

Remember how in the past year all these massive megacorps like facebook and twitter literally fired thousands of people? And the only thing that changed is they do *more* shit now? Gaming has this same problem too. These do-nothings that take up space and get paid significantly for it exist in gaming too and they're trying their absolute hardest (which really, isn't saying much) to not get exposed and fired.

BG3 is gay reddit propaganda by the way.

BG3 isn't an enormous game, it's a simple turn-based game made using the same systems as the divinity games and the ruleset is copied from D&D. The bulk of the work is having tons of dialogue and cutscenes, yet for the majority of your playthrough you'll be stuck in slow turn-based combat sequences that last way too long.
They even ignored things like a day and night cycle because it would be too much work giving NPCs schedules. This whole "BG3 is raising the bar" narrative is total bullshit marketing.

      Anonymous

Exactly. Most of the map is just an overworld dungeon. I'd dwscribe Baldur's Gate 3 as Witcher 1 + Disco Elysium, but those games had day/night cycles.

that's the thing, "the bar" is managing to make something barely on par compared to games from the early 2000s. which is something AAA seethes no one views open world games as being a successor to.

if you started BG3 at level 5 like a DM would as a module, the first act that takes 20 hours and 10% of players have even completed turns into what
      >gate fight
      >2 fight spider dungeon
      >3 fight witch dungeon
      >optional owl bear
      >village 1 with 3 combat zones
      >le half ogre sex CG fight
      >chaotic stupid route: kill the grove, 3-4 combat zones
      >normal route: kill the goblins, 3-4 combat zones
      >3 technical bosses, 50-70 health
a rebalance/level mod will make this game take like 12 hours in total and the first act as short as an hour by just rocking up and killing the gobbos.

masking that lack of things to actually do is a point to their credit, but over time people will resent it as they attempt some kind of replay value. nothing is truly optional in their game design unless you want to play under leveled on journo mode. that's markedly inferior to even older BG titles yet a 7/10 in 2003 is an 11/10 game in 2023.

Seriously. Reading fricking kotakus interview, they devote an entire paragraph regurgitating that corporate apologist claptrap:

“For all of Baldur’s Gate 3’s freedom of expression, it will, one day when we’ve all played through it dozens of times, show itself to be another game beholden to the same things all games are. Nothing can ever truly recapture the freedom that imagination brings to a tabletop game. But Baldur’s Gate 3 is proof that Larian Studios knows how to capture that spirit and develop in pursuit of that feeling. It’s unreasonable to hold other RPGs to such a standard. As others have said, Baldur’s Gate 3 is an anomaly in how games of this scope are developed. This only happens when a studio has years of development time and an early access period in which to work out its vision alongside a tuned-in community. If nothing else, it’s less a new standard to hold other games to and more a reminder that the industry seldom lets games cook this long to achieve the things Baldur’s Gate 3 does. It’s a shining example of both the limitations of video games as we know them, and the possibilities they can hold.“

I mean….they need to shut the frick up. If you want to glorify capitalism and its virtues, you should be inviting the competition and drive that baldurs gate 3 should ignite. All these lazy, greedy devs saying we shouldn’t expect quality like this are only outing themselves.

Larian was able to do a kickstarter and actually deliver the product, that's why they could keep the game in EA this long, there was two precedents already.
This entire diatribe is moronic, there are no standard here outside of a dev doing the shit they like and not being manhandled by the publisher outside of WoTC forcing their gay ass system and lore. And this freedom was won by them being a bunch of alcoholic belgian coomers who love making games and love their moronic writings and bordering bankruptcy several times.

Poor point since every major study take like 6 years before releasing anything and they could develop the game in communion with the public but they rather not because they don't want to hear any criticisms, this is not the 90s anymore each dev has like 3 discords 2 forums and 1 account in every social media they just rather not use it at all beyond announcing the release date and asking for forgiveness after not doing anything for years

Sounds to me like a bunch of studioheads b***hing and moaning because they sold the frick out and let a bunch of soulless corporations by them and force shitty deadlines and crunch on the devs meanwhile Larian crowdfunds their games to retain control and takes all the time they need to dev. Publishers are and always will be scum.

Swen honestly seems like a cool guy. I just wish he was a better developer. Because i don't think have gorillion empty containers on every map is good game design. That's to say nothing about a dubious decision to use 5th edition rules for the game

While i would love fo play BG3 i jusf can't see it in myself to skip BG1 and 2 and honestly don't ever see myself playing them either so BG3 will be something I won't play.
On that, wish devs would use game 3, game 4 etc as titles. I havr the same problem with dark souls 3, i have played dark souls 1 however but probably won't ever play 3 due to that.

This whole thing is kind of a farce for AAA. It seems like there is just this attititude among AAA spaces that its ok to be where theyre at, because whatever you make is going to be better than indie games, so there is no need to push it, you set the standard, and if you want to do the bare minumum then everyone else can catch up is bullshit, they just arent even trying and are spinning their wheels trying to pump out money printers and not actually make a game that is just good and sells on its merit.

Larian was the perfect people for the BG3, they were making those games for years and they know exactly how to get it to work, and is why the game is able to push standards and exceed. So whats Dices excuse with Battlefield, or Bethesda with Elder Scrolls/Fallout. etc. Theres lots of studios that have been making the same games for decades, and they have gotten worse, not better.

AAA doesnt want to raise the bar, its happy where the bar is, knowing that anyone that isnt AAA cant reach it and thats enough. Its fricking dumb.

      >Larian was the perfect people for the BG3
No, the the Black Hound by a full-sized Black Isle Studios would have been perfect. And they actually started working on it, similar to the real Fallout 3 (Van Buren). Both of those games would have been the real deal, and not this shit we got later.

Gaming is a volatile industry it's easy for good games to get swept under the rug or shit games to become "genre defining" only for a truly good game to come along and obliterate it and all of its clone. Ultima Underworld and DOOM both pushed first person games forward in different ways in the same year but Ultima Underworld is just a bit too clunky for people to pick up easily now while DOOM is a classic. Sometimes genres bounce around like CRPGS. KOTOR massively simplified and dumbed down RTWP from NWN and Baldur's Gate then Dragon Age Origins bumped it back up only to immediately shove it back down and then Pillars of Eternity showed hey we can just go all the way to Baldur's Gate again and make a successful game. There is no "cycle" or "stepping stones" it is what it is.

I don't understand people like you. The game looks rather generic to me. I never enjoyed DoS2, so I am most likely not going to enjoy BG3. Congrats on it doing so well commercially, it seems to mean a lot to you, but it's not really that important to me. I will still make fun of the game and call it shit, just like I think Skyrim and Cyberpunk are shit. The fact that those games sold millions of copies doesn't really make me change my mind about them.

And that's perfectly fine. You dont need to like or even play every game ever released, nobody expects you to either.
The fact that you think your criticism actually matters though? Yeah. That's what I'll never get tired of. Seeing morons like you screech angrily from your corner to no end or avail is always entertaining to watch.

Welcome to the modern CRPG scam.
Step 1: Make a huge, highly polished act 1
Step 2: Release that part of the game as Early Access
      Step 3: Farm preorders
Step 4: Release the full game and rely on the fact that no reviewer will ever play past act 1 so nobody will know about all the bugs and half-assed late game content

Haven't had any issues with act 2, but I don't know what the frick is going on in act 3. Almost unplayable, they've been releasing hotfixes by the hour and it's still buggy in the latter game.

I really don't see it. Pathfinder: WOTR, Elden Ring, ToTK, Remnant 2, soon Armored Core 6 and Starfield. BG3 is surrounded by equally amazing or even better titles. We've had some really good years in video games recently.

I personally think WOTR is a much better cRPG than BG3 is. BG3 is a solid 7/10 so far, but WOTR is almost on the same level as the titans of the genre like BG2 and Planescape.

Not even out yet, Starfield is going to be more of a buggy mess than bg3 but I do have more faith in AC
As for the rest, they're kind of subjective but you're right, "some" games released this year are gems, but the fact that 4 titles in total can be agreed as good isn't a positive thing for the hobby. Just look at the roster of releases we had for the PS2 or the later years xbox.
