he's cool, the idea of a bland dead inside average joe in a series full of bouncy excitable characters is a fun one and they excecuted it quite well
i mean his name is Larry, it doesn't even relate to his type in the slightest because pokemon isn't his main focus on life, he wasn't really attached to this career, which again is a fun take on the formula and fairly relatable for working class people. He's just Larry.
>i mean his name is Larry, it doesn't even relate to his type in the slightest
I hate Amerimutts so much
His name is Aoki for the plant naming theme, the moronic translation team doesn't matter
>Larry, it doesn't even relate to his type in the slightest
His name is supposed to be bland of boring, nothing special, just like his typing.
Dumbass.
He subverts the idea of what Gym Leaders/Elite 4 members are supposed to be like. He's not cool or flashy, but he's undeniably talented enough to act like doing double duty is no big deal on top of the fact that he actually sucks at his actual job in the sales department. It makes him a novelty. He also has a charming character trait where he's always hungry, and he's friendly enough to buy you food but looks totally emotionless at all times (except when eating). Men relate to him and women want to fix him (a nice meal). Maybe it could be that he implies that he also has a good amount of money with the fact he casually buys you food and tells you that it's fine because he makes a salary. That attracts sugar daddy likers.
>He's not cool or flashy, but he's undeniably talented enough to act like doing double duty is no big deal
This describes like half of all gym leaders
The fricking Gen 7 E4 did all of this already >He also has a charming character trait where he's always hungry
I've seen it a billion times in every Shonen manga ever made >Men relate to him and women want to fix him
I don't relate to a boring emotionless office clerk and women tend to actually hate men like that quite a bit in real life >Maybe it could be that he implies that he also has a good amount of money
This is true of all gym leaders
So Larry sticks out because of things already done better by other people and is an autist? I guess I can at least see why /vp/ and Twitter relate to him a lot
NTA but I like Larry for the slightly cynical writing that went into him about adult work life and just how apathetic he is when 95% of the Pokemon cast is so cheery or sticks out otherwise.
Considering the suitcase its likely the guy has a third job next to the gym and E4 spot that he has to juggle and characters in suits is just a pretty failproof design.
I get not liking him but its weird to hate him so much.
>for the slightly cynical writing that went into him about adult work life
Really? What's so cynical about a guy who somehow can work 3 jobs and also makes a ton of money while doing so? Because he's dour about it? >when 95% of the Pokemon cast is so cheery or sticks out otherwise
Brock, Misty, Erika, Falkner, Bugsy, Pryce, etc. all fit this incredibly vague criteria as well. Even in SV alone I wouldn't say Katy, Grusha, Rika, Hassel fit it either. >characters in suits is just a pretty failproof design.
I think his hair looks incredibly moronic and the giant forehead/huge eyebrows look stupid as well.
>but its weird to hate him so much
I don't particularly hate him. I'm just confused as to why he's so liked when he's another cardboard anime stereotype with zero personality, depth or complexity in a franchise that's commonly criticized for being full of those, and he's well liked on sites where people make those exact remarks constantly.
>Really? What's so cynical about a guy who somehow can work 3 jobs
Its brief but he has a line about putting up a facade as an adult and a lot of lines are work related. >Brock, Misty, Erika, Falkner, Bugsy, Pryce, etc. all fit this incredibly vague criteria as well
I should've worded that better, that's less about them being canonically dour or anything but rather that they falt out don't have a personality at all beyond Sabrina being really aloof prior to HGSS. Larry is this complete husk and even in-universe people don't care much about him or don't even know he's the gym leader of his town because he's so forgettable from their perspective. >I think his hair looks incredibly moronic and the giant forehead/huge eyebrows look stupid as well
Granted. I don't like the way the gray streaks dangle around. >I don't particularly hate him. I'm just confused as to why he's so liked when he's another cardboard anime stereotype with zero personality, depth or complexity in a franchise that's commonly criticized for being full of those, and he's well liked on sites where people make those exact remarks constantly.
Kinda goes back to the point with Falkner and the others. Larry's shtick is simple but he has something at all when most of the character in the first 4 gens have nothing going for them beyond their designs.

That's it?
Real people don't work jobs that are so easy and apparently undemanding they can do 2 others at the same time. >that's less about them being canonically dour or anything but rather that they falt out don't have a personality at all
Brock is determined, likes spending quiet time in rocky areas. Misty is actually boy crazy despite her tomboyishness. Falkner looks up to his father who gave him his birds. Larry's thing is that he's harried from work and he has barely anything more to him than that.
You can't really say that gym leaders in this franchise aren't boring simple cardboard cutouts with minor personality details that are picked from an anime cliche list and then say Larry somehow breaks the mold. >people don't care much about him
??? Anon did you miss the cutscene that happens right before he terastalizes his Staraptor?
>I'm just confused as to why he's so liked when he's another cardboard anime stereotype with zero personality, depth or complexity in a franchise that's commonly criticized for being full of those,
My guess is because he (and his character) make no pretension in being another thing, it's sincere about his blandness
I don''t hate Larry, he's definiely in my top 4 or 5 of ranking the Paldean gym leaders, it's just a few of his fans on the internet are annoying. I''m an Iono fan and it gets tiring seeing people make comments or memes on how they genuinely believe Iono isn't popular at all and that Larry is more popular despite what art results will tell you, also that some of them like to hate on Iono bothers me a bit.
He's just Paldean Nanu
The difference is that Nanu is cooler imo. Though yeah Nanu kind of got forgotten about once gen 8 rolled around, so the same thing might happen to Larry once gen 10 starts
I have a fetish for tired 30s and 40s salarymen who wear suits. And he's relatable because I also work in an office, I hate it and I'm always tired and overworked.
Not better than Volknet
larrygays are the worst fans in the series
truly fricking insufferable
not even waifushitters are like this
>Tinkatongays are the worst fans in the series
ftfy
This.
Also this.
Not even close to the top 10 of annoying character fanbases
>worse than Redgays, Leongays or Cynthiagays.
Yeah no
Remember when Larrygays actually thought he was more popular than Iono?
Get cancer
me on his lap
And yet none of you fricks can explain or demonstrate why.
because he's cute

do you just patrol these threads looking to hate
Aoki is a fairly boring, normal family name so in comparison with other names it still makes him look like a huge normie.
Bro, Larry is plant themed as well, both are derived from laurel
Larry is a generic name because he uses Normal types
>Larry, it doesn't even relate to his type in the slightest

He's fake-boring. Just a caricature for tumblrinas to get wet over.

Ironic since Gen seems to be forgotten now
None of the characters last Gen besides Marnie seemed to have any staying power. Which honestly, I did predict.
>his actual job in the sales department.
What? Where does he say that?
it’s in his gym leader bio you can find on the map. in english, it’s something along the lines of “not the best rated worker”
He is normal type because he cant go against societal norms and later flying type because he wants to jump off a roof.
But not just Flying. Normal/Flying.
He's literally just the Paldea Nanu/Piers.
Give it a region and he'll be forgotten like they were.
I have a fetish for tired 30s and 40s salarymen who wear suits. And he's relatable because I also work in an office, I hate it and I'm always tired and overworked.

Any Leader in Unova is better
