Im calling it now, its not going to be a real MMO.

Its going to be closer to a Genshin clone, but with dungeons and raids. Riot simply doesn't have the technical developers to make a proper MMO, they can barely keep league of legends from shitting the bed.

And its Riot's MO to take a popular game, dumb it down, streamline the frick out of it, make it moron zoomer proof, and market the shit out of it. It will be successful, but not because its a good MMO as much as it is Riot's Genshin Impact with MMO style dungeons/raiding with all the waifu bait and Tencent funded marketing to shove it onto every PC, Phone, and Console available in china.

FRICK. this feels exactly like what they'd do. Generic "protagonist" character to play as, then give you a party of only the most popular and/or inclusive champions, and call it a day. Theyve seen Genshin and Honkai, theres no way in hell we get a real game

      >they can barely keep league of legends from shitting the bed.
I think a lot of that is technical debt from the meagre origins of League, and a reluctance to go back and rewrite large swaths of dogshit code. I have higher (albeit tempered) hopes for them when starting from scratch.

Yeah, I played it and it seemed to work really well, actually. Not a big fan of the game, but it seemed well made, except for the hideously obnoxious anti-cheat. Don't know enough to comment on it but I've heard it's quite invasive.

WoW has the same problem where they're petrified about rewriting it with modern graphics and de-spaghettifying the codebase, even though it's so painfully needed

          Anonymous

It's because it's a lot of extra work and it doesn't increase profit so why would they dedicate resources to it.

            Anonymous

Maybe not with WoW but with League the writing was on the wall pretty early on that it was gonna be both huge and suffer from the early tech debt. They could've redone a lot of it in season 2 and we'd probably be in a much better place now. Oh well.

              Anonymous

While that's true season 2 was still the 'pump out content so we can grow the game' era. Like new champions every 2 weeks. Devs were probably busy as frick. Idk, would've probably been tough. By the time 'new content development' slowed down the game was already too big

Because new players are already a trickle and will eventually stop entirely because nobody wants to start playing a N64-looking game in 2023. You need new players to replace old players otherwise long-running games end up dying off

Games die. Is it worth it to dedicate x amount of work hours rectifying an ancient codebase to give your game y more years of longevity or a 10% increase in playerbase? Probably not. It's moronic but it is what it is. Shareholders want one thing and it's fricking MONEY

                Anonymous

You'd have to be insane to left a valuable intellectual property like Warcraft or League die. COD threw away all their legacy Quake3 code rebooted in 2019 and it was the best decision they made, the series became relevant for zoomers again, the game is making more money than ever before, they could develop quickly due to lack of spaghetti legacy code.

                Anonymous

But CoD wasn't a live service game. It's a different type of beast entirely. Fixing the code is pointless at this point, that money would be better spent on developing a sequel considering it generates a lot more interest that "hey our backend code doesn't suck balls anymore", but then you have the issue of transitioning the playerbase from one game to another. Like think of all the mindbroken and MAZE'd mogs, mounts, cheevo morons on WoW. Do you think they'd leave all that behind for a new engine and an extra night elf boob polygon or two?

                Anonymous

COD is a live service game nowadays. And you have to either do a rewrite or create a new game at some point, because with no new players coming in, the game becomes a gradually shrinking nostalgia graveyard, on a very slow downward incline to eventually hitting zero players

Path of Exile is doing a sequel/rewrite, Counterstrike just did a sequel/rewrite. Every long running game eventually needs to do this to survive. Just allow people to take their mountsmogscheevos into the new game, like those two games did, and nobody will complain.

PoE2 ended up being an entirely different game. It'll likely end up being played alongside PoE as opposed to overtaking it.
As for cs, I guess that's true but Valve has had Source 2 lying around doing frick all for what feels like 10 years now so it was honestly about time they did something about it.
I think a reboot/code rewrite is realistic only if they don't make their own engine, even then it's probably hard to justify to the board.

That's basically what Blizzard did, they streamlined EverQuest for the masses and it was a huge success, WoW is hailed as the greatest MMORPG of all time, now it is an old rotting corpse.
Riot aims to modernize it even further as the old conventional 56k tab target combat doesn't cut it anymore, I really hope they do manage to usher in a new age of MMOs even if the pre-established MMO audience of hopeless addicts gets left behind.

I've got news for you bud, that's all Blizzard has ever done after their couple of random SNES releases like JLA and Blackthorne and TLV.

WC was just dumbed down versions of Dune II
SC was just a dumbed down version of WC
Diablo was a dumbed down version of old adventures games like Telengard combined with proc gen of Rogue
WoW was a dumbed down EQ
Hearthstone was a dumbed down MTG
HOTS was a dumbed down DOTA/LoL
OW was a dumbed down TF2
And their upcoming survival game is a dumbed down mix of ARK and Tarkov.

Taking existing forumlas and dumbing them down / casualizing them has worked for them for 30+ years.

Old MMOs were cool because they were filled with cool interesting people with jobs and social skills. If anything, the games were the hip new digital online pubs of the 2000s. Normie thing, even.
Nowdays it's a bunch of clueless socially awkward zoomers, and chronically online millenials and boomers who cling onto the glories of the past.
Games are bound to be shit when consumers are. And League isn't exactly known for a good playerbase.

MMO devs can't lean on the novelty of large scale multiplayer anymore like they did in the past for the reasons you mentioned, they actually have to make good games that carry themselves with good gameplay. Games you'd want to play even if you're alone. This is a good thing, devs can't just copy WoW anymore and call it a day, it has to be a novel experience.

    theres 4 central problems though:
    - mmos used to be social games, but social means inconvenient (no groupfinder, no auction house, no soloing content); convenience beats social everytime, turning mmos into massively single player online games
    - leveling up, experiencing the world and the story used to be the central part of mmos, but nowadays the leveling process is just an obstacle until you get to the endgame, where the "real game" starts, meaning you can do your exact same 10 daily quests and your weekly raid again and again and again to increase stat x by 2 or get your renown to max or whatever. and for that you rushed through all the amazing leveling content.
    - monetization sucks; subscriptions just dont work anymore, so mtx must be, p2w must be and the great transmogs are store online in any case
    - mmo players are shit in general, pvp vs. pve, raid vs dungeon, ultra hardcore grinders vs casuals; too many different opinions

theres a reason wow classic works, it succeeds in 2 of these points and partly at least in the other 2
no other modern mmos work in any way

If it's raiding focused instead pvp it'll be shit by default. Raiding in mmos is fricking shit. Wow doesn't even work without weakauras and RUN AWAY LITTLE GIRL addons. Absolute trash. FFXIV raiding is too hard and I don't care to learn moves that aren't even telegraphed. Raiding shouldn't be harder than a monster hunter monster. Pvp should be the focus because that was literally the only fun part of wow and they removed it lol. Also yordles.

I agree, in an ideal world the game won't have any instanced content at all. Everything takes place in large zones and you have to compete against others for resources like mob and boss spawns. If you're outside of a safe area there should always be the looming threat of a stealthed rogue ready to pounce when you're most vulnerable.
I doubt we're gonna get that though, the industry seem to be moving away from games with fun pvp interactions in general because the majority of snowflakes can't handle it. It'll most likely be a side activity reserved for instanced arenas and battlegrounds.

PvP MMOs are fun, but it doesn't need to be one or the other.
The problem with PvE MMOs nowadays is that they are just really bad single player games.

exactly, New World listened to these morons until they realized at the last minute how bad of an idea this is and reworked it to be PVE

The problem is that they let WoW-addicts into the alpha to playtest it and they left a lot of negative feedback because it wasn't a carbon copy of WoW, so they decided to change it last minute turning the game into a freakshow with no identity. It could have been a novel MMO that captured a brand new playerbase, but no they wanted to appeal to the old jaded MMO playerbase instead.

There isn't a market for pvp mmos, no company is going to gamble hundreds of millions of a hardcore pvp playerbase magically materializing from nothing, you have to stop pretending like this is a real thing

There definitely is a market for it but we'll never see it if nobody dares target it. PvP multiplayer games are the most popular games in the world, a proper PvP MMO that manages to capture these audiences would be a huge deal.

Pure PVE MMOs with no PVP, or shit PVP always fail because everyone runs out of shit to do in mere weeks without exessive timegating, PVP gives people something to do with all the gear they wasted their lives grinding for months.

WOW in its prime was a PVP MMO you mong, it just also happened to have good PVE as well.

SPOILER PVP MMOs need PVE as well to get people out in the world doing shit, WOW had both in its prime, farming materials in vanilla, guilds fighting over throne of the elements and sunwell in TBC, fighting over material nodes in wintergrasp between the dogshit minigame, and the dogshit minigame itself to get one of your weekly tier set drops from the vault.

But hey, we can just ignore all that because you played on a pussy server and never flagged once. Also notice how no one talks about how hard any raid boss was and how cool it was years later, no that shit is gay, what they talked about is how your guild dunked on crossroads constantly, or the funeral gank or blood plague trolling, ect.

Its also pussies like you that get the scourge zombie event cut short every-single-fricking-time its implemented

Darkfall refugees really play this and it makes me laugh. These games will never be popular. The reason is besides the fact they're all objectively poor quality made by talentless hacks. The HARDCORE FOOL LOOT PEEVEEPEE that almost no one wants is just icing on the cake.

It IS a genre that I like since I played UO, Darkfall, was excited for New World before it was opt-in pvp. Pre-ordered mortal but it was so hilariously bad I deleted it in 30 minutes. Dumpstering people and taking all their shit was only fun for me. Their experience was obviously fricking boring and frustrating. I get an infinite amount of gear and can even pay my subscription with in-game gold that I looted from them. They get to farm for 4 hours for a chance to fight for 2 minutes and die. Griefboxes have a net-negative fun factor and by their very nature cannot sustain a playerbase.

They did sort of fix it on Classic era, all the 100% horde and 100% alliance servers gets combined into a roughly 50/50 distribution. It seems to be holding steady because there's always someone that wants to play on one or the other no matter what.

LoR was legitimately good for a couple months.
Everything else with the Riot brand is actual dogshit made for braindead morons though, I'll agree

Anyone saying "Riot" here should have their head examined, the company is owned by Tencent, same exact people that owns Path of Exile and many other games.
If they want to, they will make another game.

I'm sure they will have the initial riot points cosmetic/mount shop finished a year or two before the game itself is finished.

That's not even a guarantee anymore.
      LoR is dead as frick.
TFT, despite the chink money pumped into it, failed to make any impact whatsoever after 3 months
Wild Rift is a massive flop, soundly beaten in riot's #1 market China by Honor of Kings, in SEA by MLBB, and being irrelevant anywhere else because only literal subhumans would play a MOBA on a mobile device

Man I hope they give it proper action combat, they should copy Elden Ring. If it's another FPS turd like New World I'm gonna be pissed.

No way gay, it's basically a TPS with skills, all of which you aim. You could change it to first person and barely tell the difference.

no you click a button and your char swings the bigsword

            Anonymous

You aim your sword just like you aim your bow or blunderbuss, that's why the melee combat feels so awful, because it plays like a fricking shooter.

muskets and bow have ruined the game since launch, now blunderbuss

The melee gameplay in PvP is probanly the worse melee gameplay of any MMO. There's so much desync and a lack of tracking it's insane. But it doesn't feel like it was designed as a shooter. Ranged weapons just circumvent that.

                Anonymous

Lack of tracking?? There's way too much tracking, your character magnetizes towards the enemy with every swing making it almost impossible to miss. It's absolute dogshit.

Unless you land a gap closer skill first, you will never land a light attack on someone simply running away from you. With any melee weapon. Unless you have 50~ ping.

The game is clearly developed by people that have never played a proper action game in their lives.

A bit of the opposite, I actually like Lost Ark and there is a real hole for a big isometric MMO that will appeal to westerners and isn't just another korean clone with the whole RNG blacksmithing shit.

It's still the most played sandbox MMORPG today. It's just that the majority of the playerbase doesn't speak English.

That one nation where Ahri comes from, Irona I think it's called. Yeah that place becomes a furry/weeb paradise. Idgaf anymore; if we're going in go hard and don't puss out on the weird factor.

Alright. They saved dota, they saved FPS, they saved mahjong-style autochess. I'll give them that.
But they'll never save MMOs. Their luck streak ends now.

I dunno. It'll probably have good PvP gameplay? Considering MOBAs are just refined MMO PvP. I doubt it will be a good MMO. It will probably be another restrictive themepark that's a que simulator. People unironically consider Lost Ark a MMO instead of a ARPG so I think standards have fallen low enough for it to succeed.

The time for fear is long past friend, that is confirmed. It's going to be the most heavily censored and policed online game of all time. There will be GM's lurking in chat 24/7 and they will also be monitoring all private and guild messages for wrong think.

They are looking into megaservers for this game which means they'll be able to control which people you'll run into in the world. They can do a profile on you based on your behavior and fit you into a category of players you'll most likely fit in with. In theory they don't really have to ban anyone for being mean, they can just put you in the mean people pool and only allow you to play with other mean people.
