What's your least retro but still fully /vr/-compliant favorite game, /vr/?
Hard mode: no remakes or enhanced re-releases of older games.

Portal wasn’t released on a console released before 2001.
PC is a platform and it's playable on Windows XP. learn2read
PC isn’t a valid platform.
I guess all the threads about PC-only retro games have to be removed now.
console master race
If you bought a high-end PC in 2001, it could meet the minimum requirements of Portal 2007.
So it is retro, albeit just barely.
My first PC was from 2002 and it couldn't run Portal 1. It only played audio from title and sometimes showed a blank screen like 1 time out of 10. Other 9 times the game just crashed.
This was me the first time I tried to play Halo. Didn't have an Xbox at the time so I was thrilled when the PC version came out. Had to buy some shitty AGP video card just to get it to load, and even then I had to spend the whole game staring at the ground because it would lag every time it had to render something more than a few pixels away. Still beat it. Good memories.
that's not how it works c**t homosexual
>hardware released in or before 2001
>can run software released in or before 2007
That's absolutely how it works, you fat moron.
well mods are gay and moronic then
guess you guys have more in common then you realized
Yes it was
the cake is a lie haha
ahhhh! a true gamer 🙂 i tip my hat to you sir
Probably Twilight Princess
re4
Psychonauts or Shadow of the Colossus maybe
FIFA 14
Crysis 1
BioShock 1
COD4:MW
The rules for PC are murky at best, though. What are the requirements, besides being <=2007?
>FIFA 14
not eligible for this board
>Retro gaming means platforms launched in 2001 and earlier, and official game titles for those platforms released no later than December 2007
Bioshock is retro? Probably my pick as well then.
get off my lawn
super mario strikers
Pong
Why is that? I’ve never really played these games but why would 3 be the difference (guessing qol that stayed through the modern incarnations)?
Also I take back my bioshock and would say FEAR, however if we’re going strictly by safe rules, I’d throw out Breakdown. The game has its issues but there were times between set pieces and graphics I was pretty blown away, even recently on the Xbone looked really good. Definitely not from a gameplay perspective tho.
I literally just played Portal for the first time in my life yesterday. Was fun but seemed way too much like a tech demo. By the end I was like, "THAT was it? THAT's the game that won all those awards?" The turrets are adorable though. I feel like GLaDOS was just like a budget SHODAN.
Valve games are always short.
Play 2, there’s a hilarious story and it’s way deeper longer and challenging in good ways.
Portal 2 is one of my favorite games but it's by no means harder, 99% of it is just "find the white square"
2 totally ruins everything that made the first game good. the desolate atmosphere and slow burn are gone for ADHD simuator 2011. but children (now zoomers) and normalgays love it, so whatever.
>hilarious story
cave johnson is annoying as hell, how the hell did they make jk simmons unfunny, that guy was awesome in the spiderman movies
Agreed,
Frick lemons.
I’d highly recommend that you play Portal 2… even though it’s not retro.
It literally is a tech demo, stupid zoomie.
Portal 2 is the full game after HL3 got scrapped
Portal is better than Portal 2.
also, Sega Rally 2007 is great and free on PC, play it
>Portal is better than Portal 2.
How exactly?
it was released first therefore it's older therefore it's better
Portal has cake.
lies
see
Portal 2 is bloated and has a mud story. Portal 1 has just right amount of game content and uses environmental storytelling. Also Portal 1 has better aesthetics
*mid story
Any PC game released in 2007. I've been banned for mentioning them, even though they're within the retro guidelines. Games like cod4 don't "feel" retro, but they're as retro now as a game like a link to the past was when they were new, relatively speaking
There was a point where games were no longer being made for enthusiasts, they were being made for normies. Games made before that point are retro. Everything after that isn't. Half-Life 2, Crysis, pretty much any PC tech demo posing as a game, they're not retro.
No one here cares that one of the admins arbitrarily drew a line at 2007. They were wrong.
perhaps there needs to be a division: /vr/ for non-enthusiasts, since we all know after the Wii becomes retro this board will implode with even more collector homosexualry; and something else. /vh/ (video game hobbyists?) I don't know. Basically a board only for neckbeards who actually play fricking games to completion and appreciate their history.
Non-enthusiast /vr/ already exists, it's called Ganker and it is an irony poisoned, zoomer infested shit hole. I'm happy here at the geek table, please stop inviting your cross dressing little brothers.
Basically, it all comes down to Floigan. Undergo floigalysis, convert to floiganism, and learn to live the Floigan way. If you act as a missionary of Floigan by posting Floigan and indoctrinating fellow would-be floigs into floiganism, it will create a rift between the new and old, the dark and light, the good and evil. It will separate the wheat from the chaff, and the board will be split in two. It has been foretold. Floigan is literally our only hope.
are you saying Floigan is our future?
Halflife 2 was made for enthusiasts though. It wasn't made for gamers, it was made for that specific type of PC user who is obsessed with hardware and tech buzzwords and only plays games so that they can run benchmark software on it.
It was made to push an engine the same way Crysis and Serious Sam were. Not sure why you're shitting on PC gamers specifically, plenty of the console guys here obsess over hardware, too.
Any of the PS2 GTAs are pretty much just modern games with shittier graphics.
Also a good candidate.
Anything released after January 2nd, 2000, including Sonic Adventure 2, should frick off back to some other shitty board
mods = gays
What are some of your favorite NES titles?
they only tacticool game I enjoy.
You know nothing beats Crysis.
Crysis really was ahead of its time from a technical standpoint. Like if you told me this was coming out this year, I'd be like, oh this looks like some B+ tier game with decent graphics.
that's a screenshot of the 2020 remaster fwiw
i said this before but anything up to directx 9 is retro by guidelines i guess
with that said tho it's fricking 2023 and autism aside i always experienced better vr threads on v
this board is fricking cancer thanks to some bitter autistic homosexuals
Yep well said, don't forget the contrarians that shit up the threads and derail the topic
That still makes shit like portal and tf2 retro then. They can run in dx8
Dial8?
>Hard mode
that's not hard mode
that's just not retro
Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2 is the goat.
wish i could play tf2 classic to be honest but i dont have steam
>Team Fortress 2 Classic
>Pre Fortress 2
>OPEN FORTRESS
literally all mods dependent on the steam and SDK ecosystem. its bullshit. you think open fortress of all things would try to be independent but nope. I dont want to install Steam and TF2 to get your mod working.
should have had a console port
>should have had a console port
It did didnt it?. Orange box for 360.
E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy, one of the last OG source games the whole feels like a half-life 2 mod that they just didn't know when to stop at changing shit.
