The game was called WORLD of warcraft, everything took place within a giant but seamless map. That was the secret sauce.
As soon as they added burning crusade which removed high level players from the main world, it instantly killed the game. The Lich King was good but you see why it was the peak before the downfall, people realized the rot had set in. The true fun of the game was vanilla hijinks running around, leveling and always having online interactions with people in a shared space.

Blizzard should have just kept changing the preexisting map and adding onto it, expanding it, but never breaking it off entirely.
Even now that new expansions take place on the same planet they're still cutting them off into seperate maps. It's gay.

map design is one of the more important aspects which is why in a lot of ways elden ring failed
you guys are dumb. the world wasn't the reason the game became so popular. It was always the sense of progression from gearing and leveling up that made the game so popular. Stop putting so much stock into the name of the game

That was only a part of it, and not a crucial one. Dig a bit in the old internet, webcomics and their forums for example. WoW got the spotlight cause Blizzard was synonymus with quality and Warcraft brand was still very strong. On release it turned out that it you could also play on a toaster or even calculator and there was enough casual and social conent to sell it to your non gamer friends. It was simple, shiny and nice looking enough to draw in people who thought that vidya visuals stopped at Mario but also had enough harder content to keep people who were interested in actually playing MMORPG. Then it started snowballing.

I'm pretty sure that they removed loading screens between locations sometime before TBC. Early WoW was full of it. Also

WoW never had loading screens between open world areas other than traveling between continents. The fact that you can walk from one end of Kalimdor to the other without seeing a single loading screen was one of the selling points

I played other MMOs where the towns were instanced, you needed to be in a group with your friends otherwise you could be stood in the same spot on the same server and not see them

Wrath added instancing. Although only in certain spots, mostly in Icecrown IIRC, and the Deathknight starting area.
Adding onto the map like that would've been a technical nightmare, they'd have had their server processing expand exponentially with every expansion.
yeah, it's actually why outlands and the draenei/nelf starting zones took place in a seperate instanced area. their servers couldn't handle everything being in the same zone

My only real in-depth experience with WoW was through Turtle. I had fun but fricking hell man I had to stop after a while. Farming for gold so you can buy consumables for raiding is so fricking time consuming that I was beginning to neglect everything else in my life except for work. I can't imagine how much more time I would have blown on the game if Turtle allowed world buffs in raids and I had to frick around getting those too.
Add-ons ruin WoW. Blizzard failing to address this is one part of why the game sucks.
