I used to be a fighting game player before I moved to Melee and it's clear that the "Smash isn't a fighting game" stuff is just internal propaganda to prevent people like me existing like it's a goddamn cult. It gets funnier each and every year as Melee gets more and more cracked and outstrips literally every other fighting game in terms of techskill though.
It's amusing the way they have put up so many mental barriers to avoid facing the facts though. Melee clearly offers so many avenues of expression for a more skilled player to deny stocks to weaker players that you can make yourself barely touchable, let alone defeatable, in ways that most fighting games don't enable you to, hence why actual 'upsets' are so rare, to the point that the FGC actually started to make out like this was a bad thing and that the 'drama' of the FGC's games (dude, this random player came in and defeated X, wow) made them better.
Upsets are rare in melee because the competition is so low, the scene is completely dead in every part of the world but America, partly because the prestige and payouts for winning is abysmal. No one wants to play like an overly defensive gay just to win a 10$ gift card to pizza hut.

DBFZ/tag games like that are nowhere near Leffen's specialty. The fact that he nearly stalemated GO1 and it went down to the wire was absurd on Leffen's part. GO1 can't do the same if he tried Leffen's main games. I don't know why people think that set was a bad look, it actually was very impressive for a Smash player.
Most top players whose main game is DBFZ never pushed GO1 that far. And DBFZ is nowhere near Leffen's main game. No matter how you slice it, Leffen is one of the GOATs of fighting games. GO1 can't do what Leffen did tho, he would get obliterated in Smellee.
