Let's say i want to use the pokeball mechanic in my game. Is there a patent for that or can you just copy paste it and name it Digiballs?

id try and program it from scratch, but as long as you dont obviously riff it, like your Digiball example, and instead use capsule or any other synonym of container, it should work.

        I wouldnt use a pokeball
really, as long as its not obviously a pokeball, it could still be a spherical thingamabob called the Capture Capsule or some moronic shit

Just use anything but a ball I guess, games like Temtem and Cassette Beasts have it work exactly like a Pokeball but use cards and tapes

I'd not have a poke/digi/monsterball. I'd think up something unique that has the same general concept.

Some good example is jade cocoon.
    Cassette beasts.
    Yokai watch badges.

If you tell us the rough concept of the game maybe we could help you spitball an idea. Are they ghosts, monsters, aliens etc.

my first idea was using balls but i changed it to stones, basically wanna use monsters like gen 1 a good mix of animals and monsters

No shit I mean are your monsters related to these stones? Are they souls you're capturing. Are these stones magic talismens that entrap yokais etc etc

they are stones that got crafted from crystals, which came from an asteroid impact. the people started mining them and found out about their ability to capture the monsters

Ok this I can work with.

            Toss the ball idea away.
Replace it with a capture gun.
For now imagine it like a stereotypical alien raygun. With the crystal in the back. You shoot the alien zap it into the crystal.

Game mechanics/rules can not be patented. Go ahead and copy paste then rename.

            Crazytaxi copyright the arrow system.
And I dont remember what company copyright the idea of minigames in loading screens.

you should get your worldbuilding straight before you decide this

What anon said, I think you need to work on why these rocks or whatever capture monsters and how they produce them. Is this some steven universe hologram gem shit?

i already got the basic story done, i wrote over 10k words. nah guns aren't good for marketing the game to kids. its not futuristic at all. there are just 2 time gaps and they are in the opening cutscene.
it's basically the 90s in terms of technology

Gameplay mechanics can't be copyrighted. A few are patented, but pokeballs aren't.

              >Crazytaxi copyright the arrow system.
No, it was patented, and the patent expired.
              >And I dont remember what company copyright the idea of minigames in loading screens.
Also a patent and also expired.
Gameplay mechanics CAN be patented, but almost never are. They cannot be copyrighted.

It's not like TPC can claim to own the idea, Pokeballs themselves were already based on Gachapon capsules.

How moronic are you to think the concept of pokeballs is legally protected? You realize Pokemon didn't even come up with the concept of capturing a creature in an object right?

You could probably literally call them Digiballs, and fans of your game would defend it, saying that Digiballs are totally different from Pokéballs.

Pokemon openly stole the idea from an Ultraman series so they wouldn't sue you.

Use gems that change color depending on the mon's primary bodycolor or 'type'. Appease the balltists.
