The ONLY thing I think is bad in DS1 is Bed of Chaos. I am totally okay with everything else. The finale area is so good it makes up for Seathe's strangely empty crystal section. I even enjoyed the Demon Ruins aside from Bed of Chaos.
I genuinely don't get the BKH meme. Yes, it's a strong weapon, but there are fricking tons of those in DS1. Even just among the polearms, both Scythes and most spears and halberd class weapons have better movesets and comparable if not better damage.
It is very cheap to upgrade and does a shit ton of damage in any part of the game if you keep up with upgrades, it is true for every bk weapon, but halberd has big range and fast swings if you hit enemies, for ng there is no easier weapon on every stage, you as good as beaten the game in the very moment you pick it up
You can get a +15 weapon before even doing the Gargoyles with minimal grinding and the 32/18 stat spread to one-hand the BKH is shit if you plan to actually do a proper build for any other weapon.
I'm doing a Souls marathon and after finishing DeS and DS1 I'm now at DS2. I forgot how janky everything is in this game and how fighting 1 Heide Knight with its bullshit moveset is harder that fighting the trio Ruin Sentinel fight really speaks volumes about this fricking piece of work.
the worst thing that happend to the formula after ds isn't the loss of interconnectivity but how fromsoft completely gave up on giving each of their areas unique mechanics that fit with the themes and esthetics of each zone
this is particularly obvious in elden ring where they didn't even bother to think of anything remotely magic themed in the fricking magic academy, just spam wizard bro oh and there's that big boulder at the end like in sen's fortress I guess
What do you mean? Duke Archive was just crystal soldiers and man-serpent with some casters
Raya Lucaria has magic spellblades, casters, magic sentient boulders, alabaster lords, and summoned magic marionettes
I think Dark Souls is the only souls-like that is truly a once in a lifetime industry changing masterpiece. Through all it's flaws and unfinished sections it somehow hit all the right notes to feel like a distinct but familiar adventure that surprises the player and boosts immersion at the same time by having an extreme focus on making sure every element has cohesion and makes sense in the world. It was always known as a difficult game, and pretentiousness aside, i never looked at it as a video game that you were meant to beat, but a journey you were meant to experience. No other souls game captures the same feeling. They were at the top of their game coming fresh from demon souls.
Design priorities changed after DS1 and nothing that came after managed to capture that same feeling. No other copycats either. I remember being similarly immersed by Fear and Hunger and would like to see what the creator could do with a bigger budget, focus and a leash to stop him from putting stupid shit in the games. Maybe a professional writer too, but alas.
I remember going to this place and being so scared of all the enemies. Dudes that explode toxic, bonewheels in the dark, weird blobs with shields, rats squeaking in the distance, and ambush birbs.
DS1 is fun because it's much more slow paced and relatively tranquil compared to other soulslikes which look like character action hybrids in comparison
What would require a specialized build like DWGR is now treated as the normal
The issue is that it's way too easy to rely on iframes in Dark Souls because all enemies have huge openings regardless, so that's the issue with enemies being too slow
First half of the game definitely has that comfy, peaceful kind of feeling. Places like Undead Burg or Painted World are nice to just chill. Even standing on top of Sen Fortress and feeling the sun shine on you gave you a warm feeling. Sadly everything changes after O&S.
The ONLY thing I think is bad in DS1 is Bed of Chaos. I am totally okay with everything else. The finale area is so good it makes up for Seathe's strangely empty crystal section. I even enjoyed the Demon Ruins aside from Bed of Chaos.
Bed of Chaos isn't THAT bad, though Lost Izalith's lava pool is an abomination of a level. The temple parts are fine and I wish we get more of those.
I wish bosses didn't fricking suck and a Black Knight wasn't so easily exploitable with some parrying or circlestrafing, because it utterly ruined the game
>DS1 is fun because it's much more slow paced and relatively tranquil compared to other soulslikes
This is one of the reason why its my least favorite of the 3. From the slow swinging of weapons to the slow progression to new areas. Also worst NG+ so there is no real incentive to keep going.
>make build >build can use the claymore >immediately rush claymore and use it as a filler weapon for as long as it takes to get the weapon i am building around
yep....based DS1
GODDAMN this game was good, miyahacky needs to go back to the drawing board and realise what made dark and demon souls good. Das 3 and elden ring are SPASTIC!!! Das2 is not even real
Dark Souls 2 is very similar in tempo to DS1. After years of disliking it I went back and played the trilogy and I can legitimately say I prefer it to 3 when it comes to gameplay.
Look man, I finished ds2 a bunch of times and I reallt tried to like it and I appreciate the innovations it brought to the table. But everything about it just feels off, like a chinky knock off dark souls. That's mostly because of the games visuals, locations, enemies and just general feel
That's fine, I can still see why people think that. I couldn't get over the graphical downgrade for the longest time and it made me mad whenever I thought of it.
I shit on 2, but put a lot of hours into and enjoyed it. Most of it was dicking around in PVP though and the community wasn't completely fricked yet.
I've never played DS2 PVP
Too bad cause it seemed fun.
DS2 PVP still had plenty of issues like every souls games does, but there was a lot of weird shit that made it fun like the champion ring for punching and I still saw way more variety with it because the community wasn't fully meta'd out yet.
Ds2 pvp was fricking gold man i have to admit, not because it was good or balanced or some shit but because there was so much you could do with builds that broke the fricking game.
DS2 was great fun simply because of the fact that the build variety was pretty great and you could do lots of dumb shit which you could still make work somehow. This translated pretty well to PVP where people wouldn't immediately rush into one meta build, but I only gave a shit about PVP during the first few release weeks on PC so I don't really know if the usual cancer came out on top later on.
I feel the same really. DS3 made me appreciate DS2 more. DS2 is such a weird game to me, I really think there are moments in there that have the DS1 atmosphere but then some areas just drop the ball completely.
DaS1 post-Anor Londo is shit, but everything before that is so good that it makes not only DaS1 arguably the best game in its series ("arguably" since DeS exists, Bloodborne as well if we group it together with the Souls games under the Soulsborne moniker), but one of the best games ever made
Why would they not even try to make another DS1 style connected world again? I know we're never ever going back after Elden Ring but they had 11 years of releases between.
Hilarious that it's considered a masterpiece by some and the best Souls "by far". The game is so woefully unfinished even in the parts that are considered complete that it's sad. There are literally only two areas to explore in Anor Londo? Really? The giant golden city has only two locations of interest?
if you were in charge of a soulslike and wanted to make it great like ds1, how would you do it?
https://files.catbox.moe/1aw39z.png
>huge castle >dedicated physical paths for dex/str due to differing strength and agility(dex goes where str can't, str breaks what dex can't) >different gameplay options even in bosses based on your build >no iframes, positioning blocking and dodging correctly are key >a lot more secrets >exploration matters, loot is sellable for real money, not scraps like DS.
As gimmicky as Tomb of Giants was, it's still a concept they thought (going through a completely dark cavern) and ran with it, as annoying as it was. Also plenty of checkpoints, quite forgiving for DS1.
I'm not sure how people's stance on New Londo. I thought it was fine, could be better but definitely one of the weaker areas in the game. Meanwhile Duke Archives is one of the better areas in the game.
The only thing from second half that I just can't defend is Lost Izalith. It's so fricking bad. The bosses, even not counting BoC, are also very, very lacking. Add in stupid shit like having to go into a covenant to open up a shortcut, you get a perfect set of shit sundae.
DS1 will always be one of my favorite games, but I have to take long breaks from replaying it because I've done everything I could do at this point and end up just autopiloting into certain builds.
When I first tried to play DS1 many years ago, I couldn't get into it, but after dedicating more time into it, and finishing it last month, I understand now why a lot of people like it.
>want to play a dex build >BSS won't fricking drop >want to play a str build >Large Club won't fricking drop >want to play dex >Large Club Drops on first random kill >want to plsy str >BSS drops on first random kill
I always feel left out when everyone hates on Lost Izalith... even tho it's the most memorable area for me, as well as being my favorite area theme and look-wise... :c
I tried magic build for the first time after trying it in elden ring where it was fun... why it's so hard? Spear I'm buffing with magic doesn't do enough damage and does no hitstun, and I can't make myself spend a lot of spells in location because I'm afraid that I won't have enough on boss (all bosses so far were easy as frick) I can't go through Sen's fortress.. All the runs where I just took big swords or pole weapons were easier... when does spells that oneshot everything and are infinite will appear?

no matter how much I enjoyed elden ring, there will truly always be a place in my heart for it.
what's wrong with the regular helmet? heavy poise like havel's?
The ONLY thing I think is bad in DS1 is Bed of Chaos. I am totally okay with everything else. The finale area is so good it makes up for Seathe's strangely empty crystal section. I even enjoyed the Demon Ruins aside from Bed of Chaos.
>Bed of Chaos
seriously how do people have trouble beating it, just remove your armour so that you can run fast enough lol
>if it's not hard it's good
Slit your wrists fella
I wish there were more bosses you can parry.
How do I play this game without rushing to the Black Knight's Halberd every single time?
By not rushing to the black knight's halberd
subscribe for more tips
for me it's the great scythe
For me it's a silver spear
Don't be a minmaxing moron
I genuinely don't get the BKH meme. Yes, it's a strong weapon, but there are fricking tons of those in DS1. Even just among the polearms, both Scythes and most spears and halberd class weapons have better movesets and comparable if not better damage.

For me, it's killing the merchant for Uchigatana and grabbing the shadow set. I can't stop being a weeb.
Based but for me that's only until I can grab the Iaito in Blighttown.
Playing Das2 right now and I can't wait to replay this, I'll need a real Souls game.

I love it, it's my second favourite Souls game after Elden Ring
I remember going to this place and being so scared of all the enemies. Dudes that explode toxic, bonewheels in the dark, weird blobs with shields, rats squeaking in the distance, and ambush birbs.
Great zone. 100% mood.
>this land is peaceful, its inhabitants kind
and I'll believe her everytime and don't kill her
Well the eternally stuck on the bridge Dragon Butt is peaceful at least.
DS1 is fun because it's much more slow paced and relatively tranquil compared to other soulslikes which look like character action hybrids in comparison

GODDAMN this game was good, miyahacky needs to go back to the drawing board and realise what made dark and demon souls good. Das 3 and elden ring are SPASTIC!!! Das2 is not even real
demon's souls wasn't good
We need to go back to our roots!
Dark Souls 2 is very similar in tempo to DS1. After years of disliking it I went back and played the trilogy and I can legitimately say I prefer it to 3 when it comes to gameplay.
Also I like 3 before we devolve into shitflinging please no
Look man, I finished ds2 a bunch of times and I reallt tried to like it and I appreciate the innovations it brought to the table. But everything about it just feels off, like a chinky knock off dark souls. That's mostly because of the games visuals, locations, enemies and just general feel

Thing is that that area is completely visible without a torch too. It's just slightly dimmer and looks worse.
I shit on 2, but put a lot of hours into and enjoyed it. Most of it was dicking around in PVP though and the community wasn't completely fricked yet.

Together with Bloodborne atmosphere of dread was unmatched back in the day for me.

Your mom left your face unfinished when she farted you out of her butthole, but you're still lovable in a weird way too
I'm sad for you, anon. You can't appreciate true soul.
Yeah, it's pretty dumb they still can't make a better area than Anor Londo even in more recent games.
Didn't play it to this day. Got stuck on Tower Knight a few months ago in DeS and never went back to finish it. kek
But yeah it seems really good.
if you were in charge of a soulslike and wanted to make it great like ds1, how would you do it?

the best invasions truly
I genuinely can't find a flaw in the first half of the game. And the second half was still GOTY material.
Why can nobody top DS1 after 12 years?
As gimmicky as Tomb of Giants was, it's still a concept they thought (going through a completely dark cavern) and ran with it, as annoying as it was. Also plenty of checkpoints, quite forgiving for DS1.

Any good mods?

You are a big guy.
Are there full overhaul mods for DS1 like Cinders and Convergence for DS3?
When I first tried to play DS1 many years ago, I couldn't get into it, but after dedicating more time into it, and finishing it last month, I understand now why a lot of people like it.
The legend never dies

>want to play a str build
>Large Club won't fricking drop
>want to play dex

>want to plsy str

Souls games have come a long way.
I enjoy DS1 but replaying it after the more modern releases makes a lot of stuff seem trivial.
Artorias is a good example. I remember people saying how he was the hardest boss ever because of how fast he was.
Nowadays he's even slower than any Elden Ring enemy.
I always feel left out when everyone hates on Lost Izalith... even tho it's the most memorable area for me, as well as being my favorite area theme and look-wise... :c
I mean to each their own but good god is it an eye sore
The red aesthetic of demon ruins and lost izalith was peak sovl
post yfw you grab the red tearstone ring but have no homeward bones
sen makes me go insane haha
I tried magic build for the first time after trying it in elden ring where it was fun... why it's so hard? thank god bots are already about to completely ruin this website because people like you already have
nobody wants to talk to your fricking brown jaja ass. this is a website for first worlders
go fricking shake the banana tree sancho
DS1 is the only souls game i've bothered to do a SL1 run on. Dont know why.
Beating Manus with a wooden club was pretty satisfying.
10-20 years from now Ocarina of Time will be forgotten and Dark Souls will be placed on it's pedestal.
