I played these two games for the first time this year. I enjoyed them a lot. They have a very specific old-school pacing to them. Also, they have this really intense positivity and lack of cynicism. Good games.
I liked csoves.exe which was a text-based adventure game in DOS where you played as a homeless man and could attack and harass people and take a pee in public.
I played this as Castelian on the NES. As a dumb kid I thought it was pronounced castle-lion, like a big cat that lives in a castle, and I wondered what that had to do with this green frog creature.
I've owned a copy of this game since I was a kid so it's irrationally part of the NES canon in my mind, but it's absolutely dogshit. I thought it was Australian as well since it was published by well-known Aussie shovelshit publisher HES Interactive, but just now learned it was made in China by "Thin Chen Enterprise." Figures.
is the nes port actually good?
the atari 7800 port disappointed
i was thinking it would be like kirbys dreamland 2 (actually fun near the end of the game)
I wish I were clever enough to make webms. Screenshots don't do a lot of speccy games justice, some of the beautiful effects in Rex or the Dan Dare games for instance.
The NES port of this game isn't as good as the C64 original probably because it was designed heavily around the latter's hardware. For one thing the tower scrolls faster on C64 as the game engine can update the graphics whenever it wants instead of waiting for the blank. Also the original has better SFX.
Castelian isn't actually scrolling, it's rapidly changing the background tiles to produce the rotating effect of the tower. This works more efficiently on C64 because of its memory mapped video but the NES has port mapped video and you can't touch it except during blank. The NES port usef an UNROM cart because it needed CHR RAM for the rotating effect but it's still limited by the port-mapped video and can't update the screen as fast as C64 or Spectrum.
if you notice most Euro-developed NES games were MMC3 or mapper setups with CHR RAM, it seemed they didn't want to sacrifice the flexibility of being able to easily change background graphics on the fly that they had on computer games.
Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Knytt, Just Cause, Battlefield, Crusader Kings aren't fun?
Also Max Payne from Finnland, Hitman from Denmark, EVE online from Iceland and The Longest Journey from Norway

sorry speccygay but the commy gives it a good kicking here:
Ok
>Eur*pe's magnum opus in gaming is a mediocre 3D platformer collectathon
oof
is the nes port actually good?
the atari 7800 port disappointed
i was thinking it would be like kirbys dreamland 2 (actually fun near the end of the game)
i just had frustrating deaths over and over
>not developed in Japan nor the USA.
so, Bong games it is then.
its shocking how pathetic the game output of the whole of Europe was
LUV ME PARADROID
SIMPLE AS
Nebulus
The gameplay is excellent but the timer makes it a pure trial and error memory challenge
This could have been such a cool chill game
Hewson really have some great games under their belt, mainly due to Andrew Braybrook

record with obsstudio, cut with ffmpeg, convert with Gankerwebmmaker
Brazil is known for their hacks for the Megadrive and Genesis and other stuff like this mod for MUGEN based on a latin american sitcom from the 70's
Huh, an El Chavo fighting game. What a fun world we live in.
Cheesed the frick out of this game with Sr. Barriga back in 2005
Just spam his lightning punch while walking torwards the enemies and you win.
For me it's XCOM, one of the best games ever made. Thanks Engerland
Good enough for Kirby's Adventure to steal from.

Speccy version is pretty good. Hewson had good coders on tap.
i'm sure I remember the NES could scroll faster than C64 due to its architecture

American games are pretty bad. Is it meant to be a challenge not to talk about them?
Battletoads 1 & Double Dragon (NES/Genesis)
Donkey Kong Country 1-3
Killer Instinct
Goldeneye
Conker's Bad Fur Day
GTA
Wipeout
Hitman
Exclude the UK and there isn't much left. Sub-Terraria and Minecraft (not retro) maybe
Sweden made a few good PS1 games like Kula World and Auto Assault
Auto Destruct*
Always get those two fricking games mixed up
>No Mafia
Pleb detected
Hitman is Finnish
Yeah, let's talk about BRAZILIAN GAMES
What's your favorite Brazilian-core games?
Germany and Sweden are baffling when it comes to games, they are masters of the demo scene yet as game coders there's barelfy a sniff.
why?
Most of their games are not fun. Probably Turrican is best of the bunch.
Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Knytt, Just Cause, Battlefield, Crusader Kings aren't fun?
Also Max Payne from Finnland, Hitman from Denmark, EVE online from Iceland and The Longest Journey from Norway
Maybe Hitman isn't Finnish. I always remembered it as being from Finland for some reason.
You are thinking about Max Payne.
