No, Fates and Awakening sold more than it did. Also considering that every mainline game since Awakening has sold more than the previous one Engage really dropped the ball. They went full gacha and did none of the things that made the newer FE games good.

Engage does everything Three Houses does opposite. So instead of focusing on characters it focuses on gameplay. But since it’s a character centered JRPG where every character is a unit that’s unique and playable it makes the gameplay feel flat and soulless.
The reason I feel it had worse sales is becasuse it presents itself in marketing and gameplay as a sort of hodgepodge of the series as a whole instead of being it’s own thing which is less appealing to nearly all fans.
Three Houses didn’t have a well written story but it was engaging and had memorable characters. Engage is generic in everything but gameplay and maps which makes it feel lifeless

The most disappointing thing is the story is so flat line it makes even worse stories like Conquest and Rev stand out more because while the latter two are arguably worse than in Engage story wise they certainly are more intriguing story wise, if not for all the wrong reason. Engage is just fricking boring Hell doesn't help that conquests gameplay flow/hub feels so much quicker than the sommiel its not even funny.

Valentia and Heroes are mainly and Valentia was basically a new FE for the west which came after the hottest late game.
Of the 2 Valentia deserves the mockery the most but pretty pictures seems to be more important than better gameplay for FEgays (And the argument of being a faithful remake falls flat when they changed and added to the story while letting the gameplay and maps rot).
The way Fates units were counted already makes it very dubious if it really sold more than Awakening

gba hacking is a lot more advanced than it is for the other systems. so the scene is kind of dominated by oldgays by default and it probably creates a vicious cycle, oldgays play and make gba hacks -> they make hacks for oldgay sensibilities which causes more oldgays to get into the scene -> repeat
if someone has made OC donut steel hack game out of the Jugdral games, Tellius games or 3DS games, I never heard of it. but I haven't looked for one either, I'd be interested to be informed of one if they do exist
I think Engage hacking should theoretically be a wide open plain of opportunity waiting to be exploited since it's a Unity game. but asset creation would be difficult. in order to make an Engage fangame you'd need to make 3d models, 3d animations, hours of voice-aced dialogue and so on.

if by "skill emblem" we mean some classes have skills, all player characters have a personal skill (or two), and so do important bosses, and a few weapons also imbue with skills, the fe4 and 5 are definitely skill emblem (and so are tellius), and, also, I like skill emblem
but if by "skill emblem" we mean that every random generic on every map has some totally bespoke combination of powerful skills that make no narrative sense and are just there to make a puzzle for the player, and pull shit like "oops those Longbow puppets had Lunge" or "teehee that Sage had counter your character died", then skill emblem only got started in Awakening and onward.
most FE8 skill patch romhacks that I have played (including the main one having been discussed ITT) strongly resemble the former, but not the latter

I mean maps are supposed to be longer since there's like half the amount chapters they usually are. if youre really autistic about it you can think of the moment to moment objectives as their own maps otherwise idk why this is bothersome since in-between chapters is just cutscenes and you can save anytime at the start of a turn.
yeah foot locked dudes can get left in the dust especially on a first playthrough but given how many enemies you need to kill they'll still have their time to shine and they heavily benefit from dancers and the return rings and the warp staff so it's not like they're completely fricked.

mostly because in older games whenever you lost a unit it would die, and losing your lord would mean game over.

gather lost items for support points, take the characters from other classes with you on skirmishes, level up a particular skill in which they are proficient. not sure about the footjob since Sothis only lives in your head

Not really. 3H supports aren't all exposition but they do contain exposition. For example Ignatz's support with Raphael is about the guilt Ignatz feels for Raphael's parents dying because they took a job intended for his family. If this were Engage they would've left it at that but there's more to it. The whole reason Ignatz's family was invited to that art show in the first place was because of a long standing rivalry between houses Reigen and Gloucester. Oswald received a letter from Erwin claiming he wanted to bury the hatchet and Oswald wanted good merchants to appraise the art that was there. Even then it goes further. Because the circumstances of how Oswald and the Kirstein family died was suspect. Merchants traveling towards Reigen territory keep getting eaten by wolves. Consistently. And no one can explain why. If you kill the knight in Ignatz/ Raphael's paralogue he'll shout at the top of his lungs that he was working for House Gloucester. This is an extreme accusation of Lorenz and his family but Raphael refuses to believe it and so does everyone else. When you look in the Abyss library you'll see a note from someone investigating the incident that there's no way Erwin would be stupid enough to assassinate his biggest known rival and get his butthole expanded. So everyone refused to point the finger and go to war. So if you ask the question of

You have an answer. They tried but no one took the b8. So Ignatz and Raphael's supports contribute to the overall picture of the Alliance and the main plot of the game.
Engage doesn't really do this. I've already waxed poetic on the missed opportunities of Brodia and Elusia point being that the supports that link back to the plot of the game are exceedingly rare. The struggles that Diamant is facing is never linked back to the main plot. You never even revisit Brodia after you leave.

That is true. Engage is an extremely character focused game. But the pendulum swung so far in the character direction that the world direction got almost no attention. I have no idea how Elyos came to be the way it is. I can make a lot of assumptions but that'd basically be headcanon on my part. And while I love me some headcanon I'd also like to know what exactly pushed Elyos over the edge into worshiping Sombron over Lumeria. Or how many Bandits have Celine put up on crosses? Maybe I feel the way I do because Alear is supposed to be taking over for Lumeria as the Divine Dragon when all of this is over. And other than knowing the royals, I don't feel like we learn as much as we should about the world itself

I'm still annoyed after all this time we don't have a good version of Fates that is actually fricking fixed, 100% of the time. We have two options now last I checked

Birthright and Conquest are fully finished, but Revelations hasn't beenstarted. Content seems generally as good as it can be for being based on the NA version . They add a LOT of custom content stuff lifted from radio dramas, manga and the like as well as some new mechanics (playable Lilith ) and a lot of QoL shit, most of which is supposedly from canon sources. On the downside some may not like the additions, but there was planned to be both a "just the translation" mod and "translation + all the mechanical enhancements" mod, but since it seems the last update officially was awhile ago not sure if this will happen officially or otherwise. While you can use an undub patch, it won't have the new custom voice line (like the ones they lifted from FE Heroes etc) so someone would have to grab the JP ones too but again, dev stalled? Still its probably one of the more finished ways to play Birthright and Conquest at least as opposed to Old IF and patchwork updates from various sources.

Mainly because the NA version mod reports to be fully complete for at least 2 of the 3 paths, including all supports relevant. Some people like the enhancements too. There are female otaku who are straight but who really really love anime girls. Japanese culture values femininity and cuteness far more than the west, and a lot of Japanese women embrace that, especially among otaku, so you get more fans like this. It's not unlike how the many guys in the west idolize masculinity, so if you go on Ganker you'll see a bunch of men posting pictures of nearly naked men, talk about how sexy their muscles are and make gay jokes, but they're not actually gay.

I must say that Andaron Saga has been the most fun I've had with FE for a long time. Many of the maps in that game BTFOs many of the mainline games.
And that is really embarassing for the series. Especially the nu-FE. Kaga FE actually had good maps and were good games, everything after has been steadily more piss.
Frick, even the characters in Andaron Saga are better than those in post-Kaga Emblem because Kaga took all the balls they had with him when he left. GBA games especially are so formulaic, AS characters are not. Why not get a dancer in chapter 1? Why not have a pisspoor character with a great prf weapon that lets her be a glass canon in the early maps? Etc.

Berwick Saga on emulator pretty much doesn't have any load times, combat and map animations are a bit slow, but if you managed to sit through a game like PoR you can easily stomach it

Tearring or Vestaria. They're the closest to FE in terms of gameplay while still doing things differently.

Hex grid makes more difference than you may thing when it comes to tanking.
How combat works is also very different, basically if either unit takes damage with no other skills in play the round ends. So if you enter combat and hit, with no other skills, that's combat done. If you miss, the enemy can retaliate and if they miss there is something called a "rety attack" were you'll attack again. It can sound complicated when not explained well or fully but it'll become second nature and you'll understand how important shields, vantage and evasion can be.
Also a turn is mixed with all armies and each army will take a units turn like a chess game with more than two players.
There are a lot more things that go into the game but they're best left to learn as you play, these are just the most obvious ones.

FE Engage has character and I love it
I was pleasantly surprised how the cast won me over, I wasn’t really sold on them initially. 3H was similar but it didn’t take as long for me to realise I had misjudged them so I was glad when I finally started to warm to them
Most of the paralogues and the entire back half of the game are played with the Solm and Elusia units plus Yunaka and Luis. So most of the early-game units don't really get much of a chance to shine. That's my main complaint.

Everybody seems to hate Timerra, but she's very tanky and seems to double more often than not, so you can throw her into an advancing horde and not have to worry too much about her ability to survive for a couple of turns while you get everybody else in position. If there aren't any smash weapons then you can even throw in a Great Aether to soften everybody up as well.
The others (ex Bunet) are good too but they have to either be class changed into ugly outfits or their default classes are very suboptimal.

Andaron Saga's dialogue writing problems are mainly in its lack of consistency. It would be one thing if it was always shit, always unfunny etc. But it isn't, and that is what makes it so jarring.
Mangs seems to have run a tight ship on everything he understood, so he could get good help on everything he understood. But he is not a good writer and therefore didn't see how disastrous Klok's writing was, at least not until it was too late.

At the beginning of the month Rhea will give you a mission that seems rather urgent, but in reality you have to wait a whole month to go do it. If the bandits are currently in Zanado, why am I waiting until the end of the month to go kill them? In a month they could be gone. If Lonato is mounting a rebellion, why am I waiting a month to go suppress it? His domain is also really close to Garreg Mach so how come in an entire month he didn't make any progress? This is despite us walking all over the continent in a single day. In an entire month Lonato didn't get any closer to the Monastery but we managed to reach his territory and come back in a single day.

While that is true, I feel like it's bad that devs can just get away with dumb shit because "meh, other games get away with dumb shit too." Especially when Persona and Atelier both have used calendar system without being dumb about it. I don't think it would require a lot of tweaking to fix this. What they'd have to do is basically, add some simple time-management (reaching X location takes X days), let us accomplish a mission before the end of the month, and have a few characters change dialogue in the monastery to reflect that the mission was already completed. For example, Rhea could say "Our knights say that the bandits are hiding in the Red Canyon and they seem to have enough food to last about a month. Make sure to defeat them before they escape somewhere else", or "Lonato's forces are a month away, make sure to defeat them before they reach Garreg Mach".
I feel like the Flayn chapter (That's chapter 6 IIRC) was pretty stupid because, why even skip to the end of the month? Just let us rescue her then have the rest of the month proceed as normal. It would even give you an incentive to rescue her earlier so you could have Flayn join you earlier.

Technically with Flayn you have to do the monastery quest to be able to skip the month, if you don’t but get to the day of the mission you still proceed as normal but with a brief cutscene before someone goes “I thought I heard something weird in Jeritza’s room” and such
The only time this really stuck out to me is when Flayn gets kidnapped. You discover where she's being held and can still wait until the end of the month to rescue her which seems bizarre to me.
However, I don't really mind because it gives you extra time to prepare for the mission and get ready. If there's a conflict between story and gameplay I'd rather gameplay win every single time.

Not really. You can make them somewhat useful by giving them good weapons, though they are very limited in what they can use. But others can use those weapons better than they can. No matter what happens they will never be as useful as Lex, Finn, Lachesis etc. and had there been a deployment limit they would both be contenders for the benchwarmer post.

Mine must be turning out above average then because he's been great. Helps that some form of magic is just about mandatory. Armorslayers have such gargantuan downsides that if another enemy is in range they will mangle the wielder, Celine is worse in every metric as a mage, and armors are just about impervious to any conventional weapons. And I'd say a handful are workable, a tiny amount are good, and the majority are FE6 bench fodder tier of "don't bother"
It doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the game, in fact it feels like mana from the heavens especially when units tenuously held together by emblems no longer had them. I really wanted to use people like Alfred or literally any of the axe units but it just doesn't work. They just get out traded by everything.

And in the case of Engage it's only really Kagetsu, Pandreo and somewhat Merrin that really mog the early cast statistically that much, someone like Goldmary is only a sidegrade to Louis and early skill inheritance and investment can easily level the playing field, others like Bunet or Rosado are outright shit compared to the good early units
Ivy and Hortensia are good too, but their merits are mostly due to their classes being good, other units can do magical combat better in a vacuum
Seadall obviously takes a slot because he's a dancer, but that's the case in every single FE game where the dancer usually joins around the halfway point
I can see how its a point of criticism and frustration for people, but it's something that more or less was always present in the series and I feel it's one more thing people just want done the 3H way (you have your squad from the start and train them all the way)
As far as equivalents go yeah but its overall in terms of unit quality as well. The average performance of the early game cast makes it a very easy choice to chuck two of them out for Ivy and Zelkov

engage has like ten percivals, no catchup EXP, and chokes the shit out of your deployments slots at the same time it gives you ten percivals
That is one of the few fair points I see aimed at its gameplay, but you can still deal with it and its really only two back to back maps that give you really shitty deployment numbers
Unit exp gain is very tied to internal level compared to enemies (or your other units when doing healing/supporting actions) so it's really not that hard to catch someone up, just tricky because of enemy strength, but certainly not impossible

You won't lose max levels either because you can just reclass to your current class with a second seal once you hit 20. You'll go back to level 1 but your stats and internal level will stay the same, allowing you to keep gaining levels
Not even max levels, you can just reset to 1 again by changing class or resetting from 20 to 1, it just costs an additional seal
On Maddening before the DLC freebies this was actually a significant investment because money was pretty tight, but with an extra 30k you can pretty much do it freely
Only internal level affects exp gain and promoting/reclasses has no effect on your internal level. Always promote ASAP because promoted classes have slighly better class growths.
if you try to play engage using only early game units and no well you really start to see how the game is designed around using at least some ch10+ units. the cost, both opportunity cost and gold requirements, for keeping units that barely measure up with the later units at absolute best, is absurd. and it is WAY harder to catch a unit back up in engage compared to most other games in the series. engage doesn't have an est or a nino because it's EXP system cannot accommodate for a unit like that. the class and weapon balance is also extremely questionable in engage
