Neon Ultima with hipster roguelight elements. I will admit it's lovingly polished, but the aesthetic is vomit-inducing, and the hopping movement animation is insipid.
Also, while I'm on a negative streak, that CRT filter is one of the worst I've ever seen (and I do love good CRT filters), so I'm happy it's easily disabled. Even a lazy 3x3 RGB split-group with scanline on the bottom third, and a smidge of bloom, is less than a page of GLSL code and looks far better.
Now, on a positive note, it seems better than Shroud of the Avatar, but that's setting the bar awfully low. So there's that.
Literally anything other than that. Seriously. I'm not even sure what they were trying to accomplish. It looks like a halfway broken scanline filter more than anything else.
If you're lazy, go to shadertoy and pick your poison. There's no shortage.
Sanguine Lady is insane, early game you have the vampire bite thing to generate blood for massive amounts of gold. Later on you have the multishot arrow ability that deals insane damage per turn especially in melee range.
It was a passion project, and also it was extremely buggy on release and the creator said he couldn't really charge people for essentially playtesting.
Sure, tell me about it
Looks cool
Relatively short open world RPG based on ultima. Mostly dungeon crawls, and a little puzzle solving. Premise is you haven't been chosen by any of the five gods of the world who appeared after the "ancient super advanced civilisation" collapsed and the world was covered in monster-spawning mist. You go and solve the problems of their respective towns and collect their ancient relics. Weird mysteries ensue.
It can be slightly obtuse, but I enjoyed it a lot and really liked its progression system.
I love Moonring, but as the others have mentioned it's a bit too simple for its own good.
There's also some flagrant balance issues due to certain weird decisions, but it's very worth a playthrough, don't listen to this homosexual
These gays are tourists and posers. Anyone who tries to ride the coattails of the most influential game of all time for clout should be flogged.

can you describe it if that's spoiler free

I never do
vrpg is >90% homosexuals who don't actually play games only vent off and shit on everyone's favorite game
Not that guy but basically there's no levels or EXP in Moonring.
Instead you have acts of dedications to the gods, you need to do certain things that the gods would acknowledge, such as going to their birthplace, killing a certain amount of enemies in a certain way, finding certain artifacts etc.
By doing do you get points you can spend on a thematic skillset related to a certain god e.g. the Blind Angels give you Paladin like abilities, the Lady of the Sanguine Moon gives you blood related stuff + some basic skills with your bow, the Great Forest Wolf gives you a berserker/barbarian set of skills focus on melee combat etc.
On top of this, each point of devotion you spend for on a deity raises you core stats accordingly, so let's say you want a strong melee character, you'd want to focus your devotion on the Great Forest Wolf for STR and the Blind Angels for CON.
Occasionally you'll also find an item called Tear of Devotion by defeating specific bosses around the world, which will give you some extra devotion points you can allocate freely.
It is, the game's admittedly simple, but overall it has fairly interesting mechanics that are implemented in a mostly satisfying way.
There's also a decent degree of interactivity, like exploring the world for food while traveling, helping out merchants who get assailed by thieves or monsters in the overworld, some lockpicking and sneaking around and of course, the old Ultima system where you memorize and type keywords to interact with NPCs in a more freeform way, for better or worse.
It's pretty nice, and it's completely free too.

too much work on steam deck, though people have come up with nice lookign control schemes so I will probably give it another go.
Thought so, though admittedly that's very probably the only thing of worth you've contributed in 30+ years of unauthorized oxygen consumption.

I'm not making a comment on his attractiveness, ugly-kun, I'm saying he looks evil and untrustworthy and possibly involved in the occult. Maybe playing his game is siphoning off part of my magical essence. No thanks.

Wow, you must be truly hideous to get so bent out of shape on behalf of this guy. Are you him? Are you mad you can't get to my incredibly powerful essence?
Is this worth playing in permadeath mode? I had a couple of runs that died a few hours in and it doesn't feel like there's enough diversity between playthroughs to avoid the beginning getting stale.
Not really, it's a one and done game for the most part because exploration and figuring out the world is the big draw, there's not really enough variation in content outside of the procgen for dungeons.
the first dungeon felt really basic
I mean I understand that I have no tools to use yet and it's just a tutorial but so far it feels like kinda meh
rather be playing adom or something with actual mechanics
It's really good and easily better than the Ultima games it takes most of its inspiration from. The combat, while not great, is at least good which automatically puts it in the top 5% of RPGs.
Learn the wolf summon if you want to effortlessly win all of your fights.
>Learn the wolf summon if you want to effortlessly win all of your fights.
And what if I don't want to struggle too much but still want to actually play the game instead of letting summons do my job for me?
The game's overall easy so you do not need to use summons, admittedly they're really powerful but they also cost quite a few devotion points you might want to spend on other skills for better core stats, especially early on.
Generally it's pretty straightforward and more about learning the pacing of certain enemies rather than using op skills.
As long as you don't just build your character randomly you'll be able to have a good time no matter what you do, there's no such thing as a trap option or enemies that force you to get specific skills.
>And what if I don't want to struggle too much but still want to actually play the game instead of letting summons do my job for me?
Then don't learn the wolf summon. The other summons were good too but the wolf summon is insane even at is high price, and you can usually do enough damage while it's up to to be at or close to summoning another wolf.
Was fun until the endgame long dungeon crawls. Figuring out the overworld and puzzles was the fun part. Wish the magic system didn't require grinding the same megadungeon over and over to actually get a single spell.
The magic system is conceptually very cool, but going through dungeons again and again in hopes of learning anything more than the wind spell isn't great.
People always go on about the wolf summon, but the energy ball summon is cracked if you devote yourself to the Sanguine Lady. Without devotion it's too expensive, but with it you have several summons at once that do high damage AoE from a range. They have shitty AI and have jack shit durability or duration time but they can clear a room of enemies from the entrance.

I fricking love the endgame long dungeons. Particularly Tower of Veils where you need to keep an eye on your movement to avoid falling to the lower floors and The Jest.
I like The Jest because it's the most likely to contain spell components. I think it's been changed but the old Tower of Veils had a damn near infuriating amount of lava
I don't like that like half the time you spend in late game dungeons is just dodging fireballs. It's not dangerous as long as you're careful and clear out the enemies nearby first. Once you know how to deal with one lava bridge you know how to deal with all of them and they slow the game down a ton.

I'm a CRT Royale man, personally.
It was ok for what it is, way too simple though.

Posercore. Completely missed the true essence of Vltima. Only copied it superficially as an attempt to nostalgia bait.
Why is it free?

I don't trust free video games, this is probably some MKUltra shit.
good slave
I'm sorry, but look at the developer, I just can't touch anything made by such a person.
That's something literal dregs of society would say in the first place, post pics of yourself
I've never posted a single picture of myself online in 30+ years of using the internet.

why would you care how the dev looks like?

Because I'm not giving my essence to a warlock.

Kino moment.
pretty adequate dungeon-synth
I like it
too bad it's not on GOG so I can't get an offline installer
is it an option though?
itch io has a 721 build, but the latest on steam is 757 :/
post screens
no.
c'mon
this is an image board after all
and isn't a single screenshot of the game in the entire thread
>badger is wet
I will now play your game
Important question
can you play with keyboard only?
yes

It's on anons
PS
the very first thing you need to do is fix the game not making a save directory in %APPDATA%/moonring/data
lol
but ok
I'm not using the latest steam build though cause I wanted an offline installer

Don't believe his lies.
>literally just go and bump into monsters until they die and avoid we being stuck in web is the entire combat
is roguelike tradition
It gets better in relic dungeons but yeah, its basic like ultima.
wait until you get 10 diffferent negative status at the same time
> CLASSIC GAME, but for redditors
All your favourite classic games are already on every redditor's "Best games of all time!!!!" list.
Anon,I....

There is nothing reddit about the game.
It's just a straight foward modern Ultimalike.
take your meds
>modern Xlike
that's peak plebbit shit tho
Sure, if your classic game threshold is "pixel graphics". I don't really feel the similarities beyond that

I finished with the true ending without using any summons.
Only the last boss is the really difficult one.

I don't remember if there was a lot of lava there.
Anyway, just apply water to yourself when you catch fire.

I really enjoyed it. I don't get the hate. It's free and fun, pretty to look at. I don't have much free time so it's great in pieces.
