Clearly they didn't, because Lies of P runs at a reasonable, steady framerate, has graphics options, enemies don't fall down cliffs all the time, the hitboxes are decently accurate, there's an actual story, and no invasive (heh) online features to get in the way of your experience.

NTA, but playing Elden Ring and being nored to tears by it made me question if I still like the Souls formula. Then I replayed DS1 and realized that I just really didn't like the open world and the boring copy and paszed "content" they decided to populate it with. The lebel design abd overal mood also took a massive nose dive, with the constant ambient music blaring into my ears.

No I’m not new to the genre & I get how to make a build & combat. I normally go for tank/Sword-n-Board builds. Parrying I’m bad at cause— I get jumpy and make the timing wrong: not trying to get hit, I inadvertently get hit.
Some attacks I parry but I would mostly dodge roll & use spacing for defense.

The combat in Lies of P is way better than Elden Ring. Bloodborne and Sekiro are the only From games that don't have you just roll around a poke a giant boss that's taking up your entire screen.

No, it isn't. Enemies are generally very unreactive and samey. The player has basically 0 hyperarmor on almsot any weapon and lacks the ability to play a tank, and many other faults

So that's fricking boring. What's the point of different weapons if they all play the exact same with some fable parry or attack+ gimmicks? Elden Ring weapons feel different, attacks feel meaningful. Yes in an ARPG with so many weapons the slowest, heaviest hitting weapons should have hyperarmor to give the player an aggresive roll, and the fastest, lightest most agile enemies should get staggered more easily. That's the kind of reactivity that makes Souls games so much more fun than any Souls-like. In Souls games the combat is equally defined by the player choice of weapon as much as the posture, stats and moveset of the enemy.

Lies of P has some of the strongest enemy variety of an off brand Souls game. Its enemy variety is so varied it gives Fromsoft a run for their money. Its boss design is quite literally ripped from Froms last 3 games. If you seriously think boss design in this game is amateur I dare you to play Lords of the fallen. That’s a game where bosses have 3 moves max and dog shit telegraphing. I don’t care if you wanna piss on Lies of P because you have an aversion to off brand shit. All bosses and enemies in Lies of P are the same. That's a major issue all Souls-likes have. Even Laxasia or Nameless Puppet are just giant sponges. Compare it to Tivhe or Malenia that stagger like nothing and rely on moving/attacking hyperarmor giving a completely different feel from Fire Giant or Morgott, and that shows why Souls games feel so great to play whereas Souls-likes don't feel as good. You can put all customizeable transforming super duper sticks you want, but only in Souls games you feel the meaningful different of each weapon and spell and the meaningful difference of each boss.

Up to a point. After a while the game just keeps dragging on and on while the level design and enemy encounters deteriorate. That final stretch with scaffolding the tower is such a downgrade compared to earlier sections of the game.
The bosses are also frustrating later because their attacks are spastic and their moveset goes directly against the game's mechanics. Game teaches you so much about perfect blocks or poise when later it's useless against infinity poise bosses and the actual best method is to just constantly strafe left or sprint away when the red attack comes lol. Or the cancer bosses like Walker of Illusions that has so many sudden mixups and unreadable attack animations that it'd unironically be more predictable to fight a real human opponent.
Elden Ring burned me out of Souls formula for forever. I simply won't play it due to that no matter how interesting or good it is. I played the demo for like an hour and just dropped it due to that. I won't look into ER DLC either. I liked Armored Core 6 though. So I will look into other non-Souls Fromsoft games if they ever make them.

There's a basic formula that is used throughout the game but there a lot of variations to them as well as unique enemies and all the way to the end of the game, the game will keep throwing unique encounters at the player.
Victor, La Sexia and Nameless Puppet are top tier even if I still keep getting trounced by this last one.
Laxasia in particular feels really rewarding to learn the fight, if anything they should give her phase 1 some extra tricks like canceling out of her long strings even if it's pretty funny to see people run to the other end of the bridge and she still catches up to them.
I don't like the Simon fight though, I wish phase 2 was more of a spectacle/gimmick fight.

This game's story disappointed me. There's two systems that work, either have a fully fledged story with acts and characters (think Jedi Fallen Order) or leave it mysterious and interpretative (like Dark Souls). LoP's story is in that awkward middle ground where it's not too vague and tries to develop a story, but puts in so little work into the story that just about every character feels shortchanged. I still have no idea who or what the frick Gemini is despite the story initially hinting at his importance, the alchemists and the villain are nothinburgers. So much of the characters and ideas feel shortchanged as a result.
Game should've had the fully fledged story approach. The core storyline ideas are solid enough and none of the characters are insufferable apart from Gemini. The animal stalkers were cool.
As for gameplay, it's p good as long as you understand how good carrying capacity is. Leveling up stamina or resist doesn't mean shit compared to maxing out carry weight to let you wear the heaviest armor amulets without slowing yourself down.
LoP's story has the same problem to me as Fromsoft games, trying to make something feel emotional or tragic when 0 effort was previously put into giving the player a reason to care. Oh nooo faceless petrification plague lady by the window #921 with 0 relation to any character in the game said a total of two sad lines of dialogue and asked for her sister to forgive her, am I supposed to really feel emotional at this? Honestly if this stuff gives you "the feels" there's something really off with you.

Honestly I felt the complete opposite way, I've never given a single frick about any character in Dark Souls but LoP actually got me to care about the Hotel gang.
One of the reasons I like Souls is that you get exactly what you want out of the game. If you want to listen to lengthy monologues of crazy people and go into details, reading descriptions of each item and auting, wondering how to fulfill this or that quest (and whether there is a quest) - please.
You want to go like a tank through the whole game, metasloping and not listening to a single dialog for the game - your right.
Nobody tears out your control at every checkpoint, does not twist your camera and does not make you listen to the nonsense of some Black person monkey in an unskippable cutscene.
You are the master of your game, and you play by your own rules.
Miyazaki's design taught me to exhaust dialogue and come back to NPCs fairly frequently. To read items and notes as I go along. I always liked this approach to story telling, it doesn't bother those who couldn't care less about the story while those who do have to immerse themselves a little more and sort of piece together a puzzle with the pieces they come upon. It's something that is present in Lies of P as well although it does have actual cutscenes focused on just exposition. Kind of a best of both worlds scenario. Maybe it does fall short for those who rush through the game I wouldn't know.
Another part of Miyazaki's design I like is how the dialogue respects the player's attention. If you've notice in From games whenever you talk to NPCs they usually keep it brief and consise, they never tell you something that isn't at least somewhat important. Maybe it's a Japanese thing but if you compare it to capeshit or games like Borderlands that just bombard you with irrelevant chatter and quiffs you'll see what I mean.

Having fun, it's like I get to play Bloodborne again but on PC with great performance.
It really does feel like a From Soft game, I haven't played a Soulslike from another studio that hit the mark this well.
The only things I don't exactly love are how the parrying and dodging works and there's no hyperarmor. Gonna see if I can make up for it within the P-Organ (moronic name btw) later.
Also the Weapon Assembly is pretty cool, keeps the spirit of Bloodborne while providing something new and fresh.

The bosses in the second half of the game are bullshit. Yeah go on say skill issue, no. It's not the difficulty. The game explicitly teaches you to riposte and hop and roll and break enemy stagger. Turns out all of those are shit aganist bosses like Laxasia, you're supposed to trivialize her with just walking away during her attacks or using summons because enemy boss AI has no idea how to fight against summons.

The way to parry the slow delayed attacks is to press block the moment you see the attack speeding up.
Different kinds of difficulty I think, Swamp Monster was hard but I didn't have fun fighting him, while Laxasia was also hard but I had a ton of fun fighting her.

This never made sense. In Fromsoftware games you can furst time bosses and don't rely on memorization/learning except maybe Sekiro. All fightd except maybe Amygdala in BB are easy to first time. Even Malenia can be just blocked
You can first time bosses in Lies of P as well. I beat Viktor and Manus on my first playthrough (pre-nerfs).

tech fair is great, frick off
the only area I really hated was the Alchemist's lair. you're infiltrating a mad scientists lair and all you end up finding is a bunch of empty halways with the same copy and pasted rock texture and bunch of high level enemies and mini-bossed randomly placed around corners. it felt like I was playing an unfinished game.
Getting to see this lost kino in a game was amazing, idk what you are smoking

Sometimes i feel lke i'm the only one who used this weapon. The charge attack is outright gamebreaking.

I finished lies of P yesterday. I felt like the game was a very solid 7 overall.
Great setting and aesthetic, with interesting characters and bosses, but the game tried to be dark souls too hard. My general list of complaints:
>equipment weights so that you couldn't take advantage of weapon swapping without becoming overweight
>Some mutually exclusive missable quests and their item requirements you will have 0 knowledge for unless you look it up beforehand
several areas drag on too long
>general lack of trash enemy variety and challenge
>weapon balancing being kind of bad as some were just objectively much better than the others
>several areas dragging on for way too long
>bgm in most areas being bad or outright missing (although the records were great)
Still enjoyed my time with it despite these flaws. Hope their next project turns out better.
Weapon weight needs to frick off, that shit is terrible in souls too and leads to most of your gear slots being completely unused. Nioh did it right by limiting weight to armor only.
At the very least they should make it so that only the weight of the held weapon counts. I don't understand why this isn't the default for the genre.
Yeah I remember my first playthrough of darksouls largely consisting of being naked with a zweihander only. Simply because armor wasn't needed if I hit the enemy hard enough with a heavy weapon.
And I spent almost half my level ups just upgrading equipment weight in lies of P so I could keep up with the progressively heavier gear pieces you get. Really felt like they only put it in because fromsoft did it.

Lies of P illustrates the one thing I don't like about Soulslikes, how you're supposed to manage your stamina, but the stamina bar is tucked away in the corner of the screen.
So you have to look away from the fight to look at how your stamina is doing.
It's been annoying design since Dark Souls 1.
Why don't they put the stamina bar somewhere within your vision????

I have the Two Dragons sword for boss fights and Puppet Ripper for clearing out normal mobs. Since the range and damage on the charged heavy attack is just absurd.
That handle with the Acidic CGS blade on a DEX build is just *chef's kiss*

They really need to fix the crank system, either improve the effect or let me pump more cranks into a weapon. As is, it severely damps viable options, especially Advance.
Puppet String is easily the best one but my personal favorites are Deus Ex Machina and Pandemonium.
For the first update, Pandemonium gives you a really function and DEM is highly underrated, it does decent damage, good stagger damage, cleans off recoverable health and enemies keep walking into those mines.

What arm tech do you guys use? I havent felt any to be very great so i just leveled up the gun 1 to add some stagger and for a ranged pull that doesnt use a throwable consume
