They could probably have transplanted the original English script from the PC original version into this, which would make it a lot better than machine translation or probably even an actual translation since that would still be English->Japanese->English.

this, im genuinely unsure why they didnt just inject the already translated english script. there is nothing new in this console conversion iirc.

You just reminded me of that moronic Wizardry translation that "localized" the spell names from their "nonsense Japanese names" into "English".

It was multiple games they did this with too. Mostly the Gameboy Gaiden and maybe even the ports of 1-3.

      >This includes: cinematics (subbed), images/menus, game world descriptions, NPC conversations.

      >For the most part, it was possible to transfer the text contents largely unchanged from the English version.
      >However, some strings had to be adapted for size reasons, either for ROMsize, or display size (Japanese strings are usually much shorter than English strings).
      >Most prominently, the Avatar´s replies in NPC conversiations have only 5 static lines with much fewer characters than in the PC version.
That is why the Avatar´s replies had to be edited down quite severely.
      >Dynamic strings were often altered, because the sentence construction/word order works differently in Japanese, and it had to be adapted for that.

I don't pretend to enjoy it. I don't play garbage games, and the entirety of the Ultima franchise falls under that category. I only play good games.

I just wish people would stop translating anything in general. And they're not even translating it, they usually feed everything through Google.

Redditors would enjoy gay shit like Ultima and would import the Famicom carts to display next to their Funko Pops.
You are probably one of those people.

This is just the original script though.

It doesn't change the fact that it shouldn't be translated.

They're Apple II/MS-DOS games anon. I know there's some nes/famicom/other console ports but they're mostly shit (other than the Sega Master System version of IV which is apparently one of the best versions.)

let's all basedgape over a translation of a chopped down console version of a game that was already in English

This version runs smoother and the controls are actually better since the early 90s first person game controls on pc were dogshit and you couldn't even customize them, plus it has some better artwork and music quality. Some people who've never played the original might get something out of it.

? It is a Rusty Sword anon. I don’t understand your issue. Even going English to any other language there’s nuance like this with no direct comparison. I linked a quick example below. English has the most usage of this type of inflection in speech that just doesn’t exist in other languages and is very difficult to translate as a result. Other languages have similar quirks and things. Making literal translations nonsense

What the hell is wrong with you? If you struggle understanding inflection as a concept you may have autism. It’s one of the key characteristics of English conversation that people on the spectrum struggle with. I just searched for a topic, and pasted the first relevant result to explain what I was talking about.

the children on this board can't understand this concept, they just look for their little trigger words to go feral over and derail the conversation. Just ignore these posters and move on

I typed out the "issue" in explicit detail. Didn't read the rest of your post, since you displayed yourself as being too stupid to waste time on.

The name of the sword is RED RUST. That is its literal name. The translator fricked up because he apparently doesn't know Japanese. So he just called it "Rusty Sword", which is NOT ITS NAME.

        How fricking moronic are you.

      I imagine it's because it wasn't really a straightforward Japanese->English translation last I checked, but rather, a Japanese->Italian->English translation.
And honestly, for what it is, it turned out way better than it had any right to be, some of those multilanguage translations are unmitigated disasters that are only one step above the MTL crowd.

Fan translations very often claim to have the most "accurate" translations, because official translations tend to localize things (onigiri? no, those are donuts) to not upset the little white kiddies. So fans, being weebs, try to get everything 1:1 accurate. These frickers flubbed on one of the very first item drops in the game, which calls the ENTIRE rest of the translation into doubt.

I'm kind of surprised you don't know this, are you new here?

I've basically never seen a retranslation of a game that justified itself. Even in a lot of the shitty old translations you usually have a perfectly serviceable script that at best needs a couple of corrections to things that were outright mistakes. There's no need to go over a game that's been 99% translated just fine with a fine-toothed comb and redo every little line.

Most "retranslations" are done by people that don't know Japanese anyway.
