There are some games it don't run, simple as.
But other than that, it's a quite good OS with many clear advantages over windows, specially win10/11
Platforms are not guaranteed to run games.
Windows used to sell itself as "the OS that will run all the applications you have, no matter the cost", at a point it is a pile of compatibility layers on top of each other, while something like linux use primarily a "just recompile to it bro", but has developed many "fallbacks" such as chroot that allow you to run applications with other versions of linux within your linux.

NTA but compiling is just using software to turn source code (like C++) into assembly code, which then becomes machine code. Recompiling would imply that something fricked up during the compiling process, so you need to recompile.

Compiling means running a program that turns a bunch of .c/.cpp/.h files and turning it into an executable file (an .exe on windows, or a thing without extension on linux).
recompiling in this context is instead of trying to run an executable that don't run on linux, you build a brand new one that does.
So the idea is that you acquire the .cpp/.h files etc from the program, then you use the more modern linux libraries etc to create a modern version of the program that runs.
Normally those programs also come with some sort of easy build solution, like a make file or even a .sh that is like the windows .bat equivalent.
Ahh, I get it. I need to learn how to do this then, I just recently started Linux and am having annoying problems with Windows compatibility. I know Proton functions but for the life of me I just can't seem to get wine to install properly and work.

Windows keeps crashing on my end for some reason. One day I just get constant black screens after inputting my login (so POST passes and the OS loads). I tried

>factory resetting
None worked. I reinstalled the OS from an iso externally, and in trying to login to my microsoft account it got locked, it said I broke their ToS but cant figure out what I did. I sent an email to Microsoft and they just asked to for more info. Then the black screen problem came back AGAIN. Meanwhile, the PC at my work seems to have somehow updated itself from win10 to 11, probably because someone allowed it to go through an update cycle without checking one of the ten checkboxes saying "yes Im sure I dont want an upgrade". I dont want to be monitored from an os company and Im tired of Microsoft as a company. I really really would rather not.

Probably is a skill issue, because every time I try to install it via a tutorial'a instruction on a command line package install I'm told that wine stable has unmet dependancies or broken packages. I have tried to update my packages, download different repositories that different tutorials said I'd use, and still nothing's working. Someone told me I may need to delete old bad libraries and start again, and I thought I did thay but I'm still coming up short. Frankly my head was spinning from all the different formats and repositories that I got too confused and shelved it.

These days, Wine is used primarily as a backend library for other things: Steam Play, Bottles, Lutris, Heroic, et cetera. There's almost no reason for a brainlet to be installing and using Wine manually anymore.

It's been so many years since this was even remotely the case. Linux runs older Windows better than Windows, and that's only getting worse with Microsoft pushing SaaS.

This is true, but when OP used the word "controversial", I think he was referring not to the lack of software developer support for Linux but rather to the fact that many "people" on this board will become incredibly distraught, butthurt even, at the thought of total strangers using Linux, even though it doesn't affect them at all.
