Define both the first "it" and the second "it" and then maybe I can tell you if one is worth the other.
Are you asking if the hassle of installing and learning a new OS is worth the freedom of truly owning your computer? That depends on how much you want that freedom and how much you suck at learning things.
Are you asking if the loss in compatibility or performance with some games is worth the benefits of not having to put up with some shit you don't like about Windows? It depends on what games you like and how much Windows pisses you off.
If you have any interest in using Linux for gaming, just try it. If you don't, then don't.

I'm not OP, but not using Windows is usually the whole point. I mean that's literally the reason most people even look at Linux in the first place. To put it in terms a Linux-hating Windows fanboy would understand: Telling the Linux users they can stay on the OS they're trying to escape is like telling a vegan that he can just put lettuce on a hamburger.
>Linux-hating Windows

Not that anon but gamescope not being a thing on windows more than makes up for any anticheat game I lose by using linux honestly.
It's fine. I just don't want the os being a compatibility issue in general. Linux just don't get the same attention from studios obviously.
The fact remains that most of the Linux gamers on Ganker explicitly want to avoid Windows, not just have access to a Bash terminal while using Windows.
Then try a VM. Point is, most people can barely handle pc configuration so telling them to jump straight into some distro and ditch windows is a terrible advice in my opinion. You can try without much compromise and see how it goes for a hands before commiting.
Committing what? I'm sure OP (who probably already uses Linux and just wanted to start a thread) can manage to try Linux without nuking all his Windows shit. Most distros do the "live USB" thing now anyway, so you can literally run the OS off the installer USB before actually installing it. He doesn't need the handholding, and if he does, frick him. Moreover, I stand by my opinion that WSL is a stupid recommendation for someone who is considering a Linux gaming PC. If he just wanted to use a Linux VM for some obscure dev work, he wouldn't be asking about Linux gaming.

Not him but had the same issue with Windows, it was because it kept installing a faulty driver for my USB sound card. It's a common problem with the new automatic driver install system.
I tried checking RAM multiple times, nothing was found, but with Linux it works, even if it's defective.
But even if it was some weird coincidence, I don't regret switching, so I no longer care what was the cause of those BSOD.
Agreed, I tried far too many distros, starting with Ubuntu, through Kubuntu, Suse, Mint, Zorin, Solus, Debian, Fedora and I'm probably still missing a few, but Endeavour cured my distrohopping.
With the Steam Deck I would say so. Installing and playing Minecraft was a breeze.
Installing HoMM3 + HotA was a bit more challenging, but people already wrote guides for doing that.
Installed the emulators, but haven't bothered playing anything yet
So far not looking back to Windows.

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/671A-4453-E8D2-323C
For this I partitioned SSD in half and installed Manjaro as dual boot with no strings attached. Downside being, that it is not the same OS instance, so no gaems
I still boot up SteamOS to configure mods and install non-steam games, but separate Manjaro OS is where my primary desktop activity is. The problem with that being, that if I want to play something, need to restart PC
Never played Fallout 4 so can't comment. Modding RE engine games has been super easy. I haven't modded Skyrim/NV since proton first launched but have heard from people it's a lot easier now.
Any modding where you're just adding the folders to a game has been fine too or they have built in mod managers like stellaris or Rimworld.

nice that it worked out for you in the end and that you didn't leave linux.
With the Steam Deck I would say so. Installing and playing Minecraft was a breeze.
Installing HoMM3 + HotA was a bit more challenging, but people already wrote guides for doing that.
Installed the emulators, but haven't bothered playing anything yet
So far not looking back to Windows.
i want to get an 'eck but this part worries me
>In addition, anything you install outside of flatpak (via pacman for instance) may be wiped with the next SteamOS update.

What modifications would you do to the base system though? You can install Distrobox if flatpaks aren't enough.
wait do executables and appimages get wiped too? the only thing i care about
>anything you install outside of flatpak (via pacman for instance) may be wiped with the next SteamOS update
what the frick, why?
It's an immutable design, meaning the system packages are not meant to be modified. Basically it's there to make it quite moron proof.
>game doesn't work if you have more than 4 cores on windows
>add taskset -c 0,2 on my shortcut on linux
It's gaming time, baby.
I got these workgroups and I never use them
Okay gays, have you ACTUALLY had an unsolvable problem on Linux or is it all just good things like you claim?
Only problem I've had is some anti cheats not working
Any problem modding games? no problems? particuraly fallout 4?
Never played Fallout 4 so can't comment. Modding RE engine games has been super easy. I haven't modded Skyrim/NV since proton first launched but have heard from people it's a lot easier now.
Any modding where you're just adding the folders to a game has been fine too or they have built in mod managers like stellaris or Rimworld.

Is it just me or is the Flatpak version not fricking working at all, it doesnt even show up in the compability list
>flatpak
Don't use it. Is your steam flatpak as well?
>Don't use it. Is your steam flatpak as well?
yeah, arch loonix had some problems with libgc I think? and I said frick it and installed the flatpak version
It just can't into cloning multiple monitors at the highest res and refresh rate
Oh actually, i'm this guy
just remembered I couldn't set my monitor above 60Hz because the compositor freaks out and I haven't found a way to fix it.
the closest I had was when I had a sudden poweroff during pacman update which borked the install. I tried to fix it with a live session and archroot frickery but got lazy and just reinstalled everything
I don't know how people can use windows anymore. I got a new laptop recently and figured I'd at least give it a go. It's like in their quest to make everything more simple it made everything more complicated.
yes. unless you want to use windows 11 and id rather eat load then switch to that piece of trash
XD
Ive had less problems on my Steam Deck than i have my win 10 desktop this last year so my next desktop wont be running windows. Tiny11 VM on the steam deck has covered the bases that linux didnt as well so luckily i dont even have to go cold turkey in worst case scenarios
