Lies of P, Baldur's Gate 3, Armored Core VI >game you're looking forward to
Cyberpunk 2077 DLC I guess but my plate's pretty full at the moment so replaying the entirety of the game isn't happening anytime soon
if you're doing a completely new build it doesn't hurt to go full AMD
Intel CPUs should be fine
Nvidia likes to break things with their drivers at times so if you use their cards just pin the driver version to a known stable version and only update when absolutely necessary
Thanks for the advice. I've never used amd before. As long as everything just works compared to an intel cpu/nvidia gpu than I don't mind going full amd.
the benefit to AMD is its all in the kernel (amdgpu module) and mesa basically so you don't have to worry about your gpu drivers causing hiccups if they forget to get thrown in and loaded correctly
that said, there are times where I've seen kernel or mesa regressions that warrant staying behind while things get fixed up so being on the bleeding-edge can have pain-points to deal with
for CPUs it doesn't really matter but AMD x3d is good for gaming and won't burn your house down
I plan on switching soon but am I worrying too much about having to use the console? I had a computer with dos where you had to type everything but I was like 4 years old and had to get my dad to launch games for me.
Unless you go with Arch or Gentoo you only have to use the console if something goes really wrong or you need to use a cli only application.
7800X3D is a single CCD chip with 8 cores.
7900X3D is a dual CCD chip with 6 cores on each, and only the first has the 3D cache. It's truly a pointless part.

Either use something like Mint where you can avoid the console almost completely, or get used to it. Advanced shells with autocompletion and smart history are a pleasure to work with.
For when he looks up how to do something and finds the distro-agnostic copy-and-paste-able solution, instead of a tedious list of instructions for doing the same thing with mouse clicks in a specific version of a specific desktop environment.

Playing Great Ace Attorney, for some reason it maxes out the system yet if you throttle the watts down to 3, it still plays at full performance without a hitch, only with a 6x extended battery life.
What's up with that?
What should i dualboot alongside just for steam, teamspeak and maybe newer game compatibility?
SteamOS has its problems with nvidia gpus and workarounds sound like it will break anyway in near future
Wanted to try WinesapOS but its so fricking niche that there is no other place to troubleshoot other than github issiue tab

Actual relevant games, not the kind of cope games that lintards use as a sad excuse just to show everyone Linux has games too (lol)
Noob question. I hear people say that Arch is at risk of breaking with every update, but wouldn't something like Timeshift solve the issue if it were to happen? Or does breaking stuff in arch means that there is a possibility of rendering a Timeshift backup useless?
Arch's instability is mostly a meme, even if something does break it's usually just a missing library for some binary that's fixed in 5 mins. I haven't had anything break on me in ages, and all I do is make sure I have a consistent weekly update schedule and check the Arch homepage for any news. Worst case scenario you get something like a kernel panic, and you'll need some extra steps to get your Timeshift backup up and running with a live USB, but no, I don't see how a breakage could ever be so major even your Timeshift backup becomes useless.
True
I used windows all my life, but decided to switch to Linux 4 years ago. Arch is my first and only distro, on my laptop and desktop.
The only problems I had were because of my lack of knowledge, besides that, everything runs flawlessly
It’s mostly a meme but also partially due to inexperience, I’ve been using arch for a year now and I like it but I run into a bunch of issues with Nividia drivers, granted I now know how to solve these issues but for a noob it can be frustrating

ProtonDB only checks if the game works on proton, there's no section for mods or emulators.
>Modding niche PC games that aren't Bethesda trash sucks dick
Well like he himself said in the video it depends. Drag 'n drop installations, community installers, and DLL replacements are all easy to do with some basic wine knowledge. In the part where he complains about a DLL replacement not working even after trying to load it with a DLL override he actually fricks up and enters a bogus command that doesn't work, so there's that. >Installing enhanced editions of games like SH2 is more complicated than Windows
Yes, by virtue that nothing can be more simple than clicking on an .exe and mashing next through the installer. You'll need some extra steps on linux >Lutris fricking sucks and most of the scripts are outdated
It's a mixed bag yeah, that's what happens when your entire ecosystem relies on user made scripts that are often incompetently made or poorly maintained >Constantly troubleshooting on why some games that aren't on Steam works properly
Too much of a blanket statement for me to be able to answer that. I can count the games I had to do extensive troubleshooting for on one hand, but YMMV of course.

Persona 3 Reload. I loved every Persona game and this one looks like a new and hopefully good take on my favorite games.
I thought that too until I tried to play Saints Row 3 natively on Arch and it would crash on starting. Something to do with different libraries or some shit. Flatpak version solved that and it's also a lot neater so I've stuck to it.
Is it JUST me, or is Lutris kind of garbage?
I've fricking hated Lutris ever since I switched to Linux. It hasn't been on my system in ages now though because Bottles is so much better and has completely replaced it.
Distrobox is such a godsend on Steam Deck. You don't have to touch the default system files and you can easily install software rootless without having to worry about any updates. I've started using distrobox on my other linux machines whenever security or availability is an issue.

What do you need to configure and control in your init system? I'm genuinely curious. I'm getting into Linux right now, so I should probably know this.
Anonymous
There's a few to list so take a look at this page as an example: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/OpenRC
systemd-free distros usually have a default init configuration for the init systems they support so there's not much tinkering required. The link above highlights the most important bits. It might seem overwhelming at first considering systemd abstracts everything for you but it's really not much and the documentation is very straightforward.

Don't listen to that guy, systemd was forced by corporate vendors onto major linux distributions and users who had no issues with the existing init systems, and all it brought was unnecessary bloat and vulnerabilities, see here: https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-15978/product_id-34874/Systemd-Project-Systemd.html
This is exactly why people left Windows in the first place, we don't want or need to conform to some ridiculous "standard" that only serves corporate interests at the expense of security, speed, and drive space.

No, and even if you're running a 10TB hard drive you should care if your software is needlessly taking your space, especially to support features you don't use. It presents a security risk to you, and when you allow this to happen you end up in the same situation Windows is now in, where 11 takes 4 times as much space on install than 10 did only a few years ago.

not really, it has nothing to do with how the OS functions itself, most of the reasons for being anti-systemd is just schizo drivel like >it does more than its supposed to, muh unigz philosophy!!1 (it doesn't, they confuse systemd for its extra, optional modules) >muh CIA/corporation funded it!!1 (every big open source project has this factor) >muh 1 million lines of code!!11 not auditable!! (plenty of open sauce projects including linux are like this) >forced down everyone!!1 (because its convenient for devs, maintainers, and users)
the one kernel of truth was that it was once buggy and the dev is egotistical, thats about it.
there is no tangible benefit in switching to a different init other than wasting time.
the *only* scenario where you might want something thats not systemd, is if you run a C library other than gcc, like musl, which is common in embedded linuxes, like alpine. systemd is linux+gcc only.
in reality, its just a matter of aesthetics and *appearing* to being holier and smarter than thou, don't take anyone who spouts "muh UNIX philosophy" or "software minimalism" seriously, you'll find a LOT of overlap with /misc/schizos, like the people at suckless and cat-v, feels over reals, that type of stuff
they're the type of people who would shit on Golang for being a "webshit" language (or engage in language wars in general, who the frick cares), but because the C and UNIX creators made Go they suck its dick

People who talk up systemd's modularity are just disingenuous. Yes, you can technically have the rest of systemd without system-udevd or the reverse, but the complete systemd package is dragged in as a hard dependency by DEs, which have become more monolithic and complex after the wayland transition. It's not the fault of lennart/systemd, but you'd have to be extremely naive to not see that redhat anticipated this when the same thing with *kits, udev, pulseaudio etc.

Anon, some people just want to use their computer without hassle. And this isn't black and white, it's a spectrum. Some understand that Windows sucks now, but don't want to get too technical with Linux, and Mint exists specifically for them. I wanted to build my system program by program while retaining the convenience of a desktop environment, so I use Arch + KDE Plasma. Just because you care about the minute details of how your system fricking STARTS doesn't mean that everyone else should care too. Most people just don't give a shit, and there is nothing wrong with that.

People need to let go of the Unix philosophy of doing one thing and doing it good. that's not how real world software works, that kind of software requires an insane amount of cooperation and coordination which simply isn't realistic. it was only possible with Unix because bell labs was an isolated and small environment. it simply doesn't work in the real world.
Most recently Spyro 2 from trilogy remake on Steam Deck. >>game you're looking forward to
I was looking forward to playing Alan Wake 2 eventually but I'm not planning to give any money to Epic Games until they change their attitude on Linux gaming, which will probably be never because Tim is personally butthurt about Steam becoming successful in a market he had ignored and will therefore do the opposite of whatever Steam does. I guess it works out for him in the end, because then he can feel like the good guy by whining that Valve has a monopoly in another thing he ignored while Valve was investing in it.
I really only play games, draw and browse the web. Are there any distros more suited for a wide variety of games or does it really not matter what I go with? What about older games?
I just want it to mostly be a one time setup that requires minimal maintenance.
Idk if it's been done but I would wager a large sum of money that you could get Linux installed and running a game in less time and with less overall clicks than Windows

I have a gtx 980. But I won't buy an nvidia gpu ever again. I thought about trying one of those intel arc things, just for the lulz.
it doesn't seem like arc's linux drivers are in a great shape. A number of recent games have issues and apparently you have to choose between drivers that kinda let you run games or drivers that give you hardware acceleration. I wouldn't say it's worth it given the current support.
PSA for anyone who wants to run this game (which is free on GOG right now):
Audio in cutscenes is broken, but you just need to set the environment variable >WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=d"
to fix it, and the >WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=d" %command%
syntax used for Steam launch options also works in Bottles. I don't know about Heroic because I haven't gotten around to installing it, and I was already downloading the offline installer from GOG by the time I remembered it exists. So I just ran the installer using Bottles. I'm not sure if unpacking with Innoextract would have been enough because the installer did some .NET shit.
Using >WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=" %command%
also works.
Several ProtonDB reports have the "d" at the end, but I don't know what the frick that "d" means, and the WINEDLLOVERRIDES section of the Wine manual doesn't mention anything about it. >Defines the override type and load order of dlls used in the loading process for any dll. There are currently two types of libraries that can be loaded into a process address space: native windows dlls (native) and Wine internal dlls (builtin). The type may be abbreviated with the first letter of the type (n or b). The library may also be disabled (''). Each sequence of orders must be separated by commas.
So maybe "d" does the same thing as "" because it's not a valid input. lol
d is shorthand for disabled, but you are right that it does nothing and you could put nothing or any other character except ('N', 'n', 'B', 'b') and it will be disabled.
>So maybe "d" does the same thing as "" because it's not a valid input
Yeah, pretty much. There's a help message on how it's supposed to be used

Why can't these shithead game devs release a game for Linux? it's not that hard all they have to do is target Linux and link some libraries to their compiler, that's all. >muh maintenance tho
just let the community fix the bugs
Modern game devs are just incompetent. Also a lot of them get assblasted when Linux users report bugs, even when most of them are system-agnostic bugs. They don't like having people point out their shitty code, which Linux users are more likely to do. Some devs are pretty based though, like the Vintage Story, Factorio, and Veloren guys
I'm fine with proton, I get it, they don't want to bother with maintaining system level code and want to focus on gameplay or the engine instead.
at the very least they should target WINE properly. so that the game is automatically a platinum on protondb.
some companies seem to at least test on proton at least, capcom has had a relationship with valve for some years and they at least seem to do some basic testing of their games prelaunch, I think others also give the proton team prelaunch access to games so they can test themselves. That seemed to be the cae with cp77 and eldenr ing, for example
Obligatory "but native ports are sometimes bad" just to get that out of the way.
But yes, I would appreciate native support from developers who aren't prone to fricking up such things.
I still don't understand what Linuxtards issue is with backwards compatibility.
I think it's because they have too much free time on their hands both the library developers and repo jannies and they just need to do something to justify their hobby. so they frick up backwards compatibility because otherwise they'd have nothing else to do for a while
The most common problem related to backwards compatibility is games complaining that they can't find libssl.so.1.0.0 or whatever, and Steam Linux Runtime fixes that. Backwards compatibility isn't a problem in the first place if developers distribute such dependencies themselves (inb4 "but bloat", okay well pick your poison).
By bad Linux ports, I meant the ones that are just bugged, and never worked properly.
I would too if not for the fact that Wine/Proton are simply the only way forward, you either accept that fact or continue seething about it. A world in which native Linux ports are a commodity was never going to happen. The only reason Linux has gotten somewhat of a foothold in the gaming sphere now is on Valve and Proton, it would have forever languished in obscurity otherwise.
so what made you change to linux?
Windows 8 release was the tipping point for me. That made me realise I was done being at the mercy of one single monolithic company and the fricked up direction they were taking their closed source OS in.
I’m trying to get MGSV working on Arch m. The DODI repack does not work at all and the CPY version, which is an earlier release of the game, is sub-30fps. It’s weird, as I had no issues with it on Gentoo. Any advice on how I can go about fixing this?
I didn't want to "up"grade to Windows 10.
So I switched to Ubuntu, laughed at the fact that I needed an extension to create desktop shortcuts, and then switched to Mint.
I used Windows 7 back in the day, and decided I was going to switch to Windows 10 when it released (because it was 'free'), and stuck with it until last month since I learned that the Steam Deck doesn't have a custom homemade OS and is actually just a linux-based OS.
I made the jump a week ago (Linuxmint Victoria) and I don't know if looking back should even be an option. All games play good, most programs I use are already available. There isn't random shit I need to permanently disable/remove on startup that is preinstalled.
Windows 10 being Windows 10 made me consider it, and seeing Windows 11 made me certain. I'm currently playing around with Arch on an OS-less laptop I bought for uni, and I'll be using the knowledge I will have acquired to fully switch to Linux when I build me next PC.

but I'd personally recommend CachyOS live-cd because it's has fresh stuff inside
I already have KDE Plasma installed. I just want to read more about what it can do. More specifically, I want a desktop wallpaper with an animated spirograph like pic related. I understand that I'll probably have to program it, but that not the main issue.
I don't want a gif, I want the spirograph to be configurable (size, location, color, speed, etc.). I understand that something like this will require programming, I just want to know if this is even possible, and it if yes, then where can I read about it.

I'm not knowledgeable in Linux yet in terms of programming to it. but I think that X and wayland both accept any format as a display, they're basically an empty canvas and you just gotta find a way to send the pixels to them, I think X11 has something called main or root window/canvas which I think might be your wallpaper.
so do both a backend for controlling your vector graphics? and then send the result to X11/Wayland.

I dunno, Homeworld 3 I guess?
It's not, but is not all that nooby friendly, you have to learn some things in order to use it properly, specially when you have to troubleshoot some game not working or having bugs.
I thought Lutris created a separate prefix for each game by default. It doesn't?
I only tried to use it once, and it failed to run the one game that I had trouble running with vanilla Wine, so I uninstalled it.
It's just a launcher. It has some installation scripts that may or may not make the game you want to play work. However it doesn't do anything special to make games work either. Anything Lutris does, you can do by hand.
Launchers are comfy. It's not real gaming unless I stare at a grid of box art images before launching Blood for the 29164th time.
Now if only I had a magic button that would delete all low-quality garbage from SteamGridDB so that I'm guaranteed not to get garbage when Cartridges automatically downloads box art.
It's just you, it provides a handy place to change all gaming related things. It does have some problems like outdated install scripts (don't use them) and the UI is filled with touchscreen-isms that don't work on desktop.
Indie game devs have it as simple as just changing the platform they're building their game on, it hurts when you see the devs building a game for windows and mac but didn't care enough to make a Linux port.
what really hurts is seeing programmers in general not giving a shit about free software, they don't even have to open source their software just release it on Linux.

If that's platinum anything lower than that must be terrible. I guess I'll check again in 5 years
Yeah, I agree. I have been using arch linux ever since I was born and I can say windows 11 just stomps. Nothing in linux works, my pc literally blew up when I tried booting pacman, shit's crazy. True story.
begging every day like vegans isn't going to make more people move to your dead OS
if you care so much why don't you put work making linux actually usable? mental gymnastics don't do shit when people get their hands on the OS and realize everything is worse
>begging
no one is begging for anything, no one cares that you prefer windows, dude
that's like 99% of the world population, what you do with you computer literally does not matter to anyone else
keep using windows if that's what you want, you're not the main character
you're just a butthurt attention seeking homosexual with nothing better to do
The way I went about this is more complicated than it needs to be.
1. Download MorePowerTool and a copy of the bios (https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/) your videocard uses from techpowerup.
2. Run MorePowerTool with wine (I just installed it using lutris) load your rom and go to the OC Limits tab then change the memory timing section from 1 to 2. Save the config.
3. Copy your power table from /sys/class/drm/card1/device/pp_table
4. Open the MorePowerTool config you made and your pp_table in a hex editor
5. In the MorePowerTool config copy offset 0100 to 0AA5 and paste it over the copy of your pp_table, it should overwrite the contents of pp_table completely (you could probably just figure out the exact value that gets changed and just change that in your pp_table too)
6. Overwrite your current pp_table with the modified one "env sudo cp /pathtomodifiedtable/pp_table /sys/class/drm/card0/device/pp_table"
If you didn't frick anything up the command will go through and nothing will happen but fast memory timings will be enabled. I've only been using linux a couple months so someone with more experience could probably make a script that does all this for you.
I wish this weren't locked to 30 fps. Running speed scrolls the screen more than fast enough for 30 fps to look like ass.
Not that I've tried to unlock it, but apparently all of the engine logic is tied to frame rate as if it's a Japanese game or something.
Btw for people wanting to emulate this, I had to troubleshoot an audio stutter problem. There is an option in the audio tab called audio buffering. The description reads: enables audio buffering, which reduces crackle/stutter but increases audio latency. This option is enabled by default. This is was the CAUSE of the audio crackle/stutter for some reason. Disabling it fixed it.

Thanks, I was planning to try emulate Lollipop Chainsaw, this audio stutter fix will be helpful!

I forgot to add something. When I first launched RPCS3 I was met with the error 'Failed to set RLIMIT_MEMLOCK size to 2 GiB'. I fixed it by adding the lines (or editing them if they already exist) in /etc/security/limits.conf
* hard memlock unlimited
* soft memlock unlimited
you could also just set the value to 2GB in bytes.
Like for a concrete example in windows I can install LTSC, open a browser, switch to a good browser, then download and install steam and that's all done mostly via mouse clicks?
Is there a Linux version that allows me to be equally lazy
Either Linux Mint, Pop OS or Ubuntu (LTS is fine too).
Or wait for SteamOS for PC.
Don't listen to
even on Linux Mint you're going to have to troubleshoot random moronic crap every week
The only times you'll have to troubleshoot something is when you or the distro maintainers break something, which is really rare but can still happen, just like Windows updates.
The game is Nox (ooh look it's on sale):
https://www.gog.com/en/game/nox
Running natively with the OpenNox engine:
https://github.com/noxworld-dev/opennox
That comes with two executables, "opennox" and "opennox-hd"; the latter is the one that adds widescreen support.
(The game also just works with Wine, last time I checked, but if you want to run it that way for some reason, then you might want to use Gamescope to deal with the game trying to hijack your display settings to run in full-screen at low resolution.)
>.sh .sh .sh
Neat icons, but why (and how even) are you attaching icons to shell scripts instead of using desktop entry files to make shortcuts?
Or did you make desktop entries and put ".sh" in the name field just to frick with me?
To expand on what the Ganker guy said, desktop entries in /usr/share/applications (root-owned) and ~/.local/share/applications (user-owned) define the shortcuts in your menu, while desktop entries in ~/Desktop define actual desktop shortcuts. The ones in ~/Desktop need to be made executable (chmod u+x). You can also put them in other folders, e.g. my desktop had too many game shortcuts so I moved some into a folder on my desktop, and when I open that folder, the desktop entries still act as shortcuts.
...
Actually, if you're the guy in the Ganker thread who claims to be using Gnome, then just putting executable desktop entries in ~/Desktop might not work. Last time I checked, getting desktop shortcuts in Gnome required some Gnome Tweaks shit because Gnome is ass-backwards on purpose. Everything before the "..." above is true about Cinnamon and probably most other DEs though.
No "command line trash" was mentioned in that post except for chmod, which isn't even required to add execute permissions in any sane DE because you can just right-click the file and open a properties window and check a box to make it executable. As for needing Gnome Tweaks, frick Gnome but that's not a command line tool.

that frog poster is in every single linux thread, it's kind of amazing
There are millions of videos on YouTube, probably hundreds of comparisons at the least. How could anyone tell you "yes they are take/real" when that's something that needs to be checked on a case by case basis? Also performance is going to vary based on a number of factors, like whether the game is CPU bound, GPU model and game. You can't extrapolate the result from a specific game to another or a different GPU to yours
You can't take results from card a and expect them to apply to card b, you can't results from game c to apply on game d. If you have a pascal card you're likely going to get a performance punishment on vkd3d games

apparently for some fricking reason some games don't use steam linux runtime by default. leaving this here for people searching for solution in archive
Praise be. I was fricking wondering why Garry's Mod was using Proton when ProtonDB said it ran natively. I had assumed native support was deprecated (which apparently it might as well be)
>apparently for some fricking reason some games don't use steam linux runtime by default.
I noticed it happens a lot to game that were published without Linux support initially, then added at a later time.

It’s mostly a meme but also partially due to inexperience, I’ve been using arch for a year now and I like it but I run into a bunch of issues with Nividia drivers, granted I now know how to solve these issues but for a noob it can be frustrating
Back when I was still on nvidia I just used the DKMS drivers that Arch offered, literally never had any issues with those.

What's the best hardware for a linux build?
if you're doing a completely new build it doesn't hurt to go full AMD
I had a computer with dos where you had to type everything but I was like 4 years old and had to get my dad to launch games for me.
is 7800X3D really better than 7900x3d?
Unless you go with Arch or Gentoo you only have to use the console if something goes really wrong or you need to use a cli only application.
7800X3D is a single CCD chip with 8 cores.
7900X3D is a dual CCD chip with 6 cores on each, and only the first has the 3D cache. It's truly a pointless part.
if I install gentoo am I going to have to type out the entire file path just to watch an anime episode?
Either use something like Mint where you can avoid the console almost completely, or get used to it. Advanced shells with autocompletion and smart history are a pleasure to work with.
>having to use the console

Considering how dx12 games run better with vkd3d, there is no such game you talk about.
I dual boot and openSuse runs dead space 2 with absolutely no issues right out of the gate. Windows can't even launch the frickin thing.

You'll need some extra steps on linux
>Lutris fricking sucks and most of the scripts are outdated
It's a mixed bag yeah, that's what happens when your entire ecosystem relies on user made scripts that are often incompetently made or poorly maintained
>Constantly troubleshooting on why some games that aren't on Steam works properly
Too much of a blanket statement for me to be able to answer that. I can count the games I had to do extensive troubleshooting for on one hand, but YMMV of course.

He's right about that. Unless you want to play a game which has a community project providing lutris support you're better off with bottles.

isn't the steam flatpak pretty bad?
I thought that too until I tried to play Saints Row 3 natively on Arch and it would crash on starting. Something to do with different libraries or some shit. Flatpak version solved that and it's also a lot neater so I've stuck to it.
I've fricking hated Lutris ever since I switched to Linux. It hasn't been on my system in ages now though because Bottles is so much better and has completely replaced it.
Take the Arch distrobox pill.
Distrobox is such a godsend on Steam Deck. You don't have to touch the default system files and you can easily install software rootless without having to worry about any updates. I've started using distrobox on my other linux machines whenever security or availability is an issue.

Why not Arch? What do people hate systemd for?
I have no need for it so I don't use it
What init do you use instead of systemd? What makes it better?
OpenRC
It's lighter and faster, and it only does what I need it to
Where can I see benchmarks of systemd vs OpenRC? What does systemd do that you don't need?
>No response
Once again a systemd opponent fails to back up their opinion with evidence.
nta but the reason why I use openrc over systemd is because it's simple and easier to configure. It provides me with more control over my machine and the processes that run. Systemd works contrary to the unix philosophy and does more than it should thus making it bloated and intrusive.
>actual russian troony with 'jaks on thumbnails
can't make this shit up
Not an argument against the stats presented in the video itself.
What do you need to configure and control in your init system? I'm genuinely curious. I'm getting into Linux right now, so I should probably know this.
There's a few to list so take a look at this page as an example: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/OpenRC
systemd-free distros usually have a default init configuration for the init systems they support so there's not much tinkering required. The link above highlights the most important bits. It might seem overwhelming at first considering systemd abstracts everything for you but it's really not much and the documentation is very straightforward.
literally nothing. systemd makes it moronicly easy too. its just schizoshit, antisystemd people are like windows7 schizos you see on Ganker
I see. I've received similar responses in Ganker's /fglt/. It's the kind of people who treat their OS as a hobby.
This is exactly why people left Windows in the first place, we don't want or need to conform to some ridiculous "standard" that only serves corporate interests at the expense of security, speed, and drive space.
>at the expense of security, speed, and drive space
a systemd package on archlinux is 29.80mib. kindly cope and seethe sir, do the needful
>SAR good morning and please allow me to bundle the needful isequal library in your install
sorry rajesh, I'm not going to allow you to bloat creep my software
do you have your linux installed off a RW CD?
No, and even if you're running a 10TB hard drive you should care if your software is needlessly taking your space, especially to support features you don't use. It presents a security risk to you, and when you allow this to happen you end up in the same situation Windows is now in, where 11 takes 4 times as much space on install than 10 did only a few years ago.
>drive space
homie, we ain't living in the 90s no more.
it matters for embedded, for desktop it really doesn't matter
>just let the community fix the bugs
you know the devs won't release the source code
no need for source code, plenty of nerds are more than happy to hack on the binaries.
not really, it has nothing to do with how the OS functions itself, most of the reasons for being anti-systemd is just schizo drivel like
>it does more than its supposed to, muh unigz philosophy!!1 (it doesn't, they confuse systemd for its extra, optional modules)
>muh CIA/corporation funded it!!1 (every big open source project has this factor)
>muh 1 million lines of code!!11 not auditable!! (plenty of open sauce projects including linux are like this)
>forced down everyone!!1 (because its convenient for devs, maintainers, and users)
the one kernel of truth was that it was once buggy and the dev is egotistical, thats about it.
there is no tangible benefit in switching to a different init other than wasting time.
the *only* scenario where you might want something thats not systemd, is if you run a C library other than gcc, like musl, which is common in embedded linuxes, like alpine. systemd is linux+gcc only.
in reality, its just a matter of aesthetics and *appearing* to being holier and smarter than thou, don't take anyone who spouts "muh UNIX philosophy" or "software minimalism" seriously, you'll find a LOT of overlap with /misc/schizos, like the people at suckless and cat-v, feels over reals, that type of stuff
they're the type of people who would shit on Golang for being a "webshit" language (or engage in language wars in general, who the frick cares), but because the C and UNIX creators made Go they suck its dick
and the worst part is, the specimen found on Ganker often can't even program, sad!
https://people.debian.org/~stapelberg/docs/systemd-dependencies.html
You've never written more than a hello world program in Python and you have no clue what you're talking about.
>muh optional modules
They're not optional if they're distributed in the binary anyway
People who talk up systemd's modularity are just disingenuous. Yes, you can technically have the rest of systemd without system-udevd or the reverse, but the complete systemd package is dragged in as a hard dependency by DEs, which have become more monolithic and complex after the wayland transition. It's not the fault of lennart/systemd, but you'd have to be extremely naive to not see that redhat anticipated this when the same thing with *kits, udev, pulseaudio etc.
> systemd makes it moronicly easy too
Exactly. Systemd is for two kinds of people, barely tech literate ones who don't want to tinker with their machine or morons who like to pretend they know anything about linux.
Can you please frick off back to whatever place you came from? You obviously don't want to talk about anything videogame related. You're making the Windows defenders look sane and reasonable by comparison. Nobody gives a shit what software you use.

Did you respond to the wrong post? None of those point were made ITT before

No, I'm saying that proponents of systemd always use the same arguments and will just pick out a new point to focus on until the other person says they just don't want to use systemd, or the systemd proponent just resorts to railing on meaningless shit like

People hate it mostly for not following Unix philosophy, my opinion on it is neutral but i dont like how some programs have a dependency on it.

Linux Mint is probably your best bet
+1 for mint. Perfect for new linux users.
Idk if it's been done but I would wager a large sum of money that you could get Linux installed and running a game in less time and with less overall clicks than Windows
That's only true if you're not a moron. So morons have to resort to Windows even if it entails more clicks.

how many of you guys have AMD gpus and how many have here have Nvidia gpus?
I have integrated AMD graphics.
AMD gpu + cpu. It's pretty good, you can expect launch day hardware support now.
I have a gtx 980. But I won't buy an nvidia gpu ever again. I thought about trying one of those intel arc things, just for the lulz.
what business is it of yours what gpu I have, friendo?
amd combo
it doesn't seem like arc's linux drivers are in a great shape. A number of recent games have issues and apparently you have to choose between drivers that kinda let you run games or drivers that give you hardware acceleration. I wouldn't say it's worth it given the current support.

PSA for anyone who wants to run this game (which is free on GOG right now):
Audio in cutscenes is broken, but you just need to set the environment variable
>WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=d"
to fix it, and the
>WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=d" %command%
syntax used for Steam launch options also works in Bottles. I don't know about Heroic because I haven't gotten around to installing it, and I was already downloading the offline installer from GOG by the time I remembered it exists. So I just ran the installer using Bottles. I'm not sure if unpacking with Innoextract would have been enough because the installer did some .NET shit.
Using
>WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=" %command%
Thanks
>d is shorthand for disabled

Payday 3 (fixed servers edition)
Why can't these shithead game devs release a game for Linux? it's not that hard all they have to do is target Linux and link some libraries to their compiler, that's all.
>muh maintenance tho
just let the community fix the bugs
Modern game devs are just incompetent. Also a lot of them get assblasted when Linux users report bugs, even when most of them are system-agnostic bugs. They don't like having people point out their shitty code, which Linux users are more likely to do. Some devs are pretty based though, like the Vintage Story, Factorio, and Veloren guys
i hate proton encouraging this
give us actual fricking ports
But yes, I would appreciate native support from developers who aren't prone to fricking up such things.
its not the native ports themselves, its just distros fricking backward compat
Windows 8 release was the tipping point for me. That made me realise I was done being at the mercy of one single monolithic company and the fricked up direction they were taking their closed source OS in.
Well you said it. They're shitheads. You shouldn't play shithead games.
When devs care, it shows (factorio).
>My whole personality is based around my computer and its operational system
Oh my- how pathetic.
How can a personality be based around something you own ?
I’m trying to get MGSV working on Arch m. The DODI repack does not work at all and the CPY version, which is an earlier release of the game, is sub-30fps. It’s weird, as I had no issues with it on Gentoo. Any advice on how I can go about fixing this?
so what made you change to linux?
Windows
i really like KDE "ecosystem"
comfy shit
KMail and KOrganizer is dogshit. What do you use as an alternative?
not him but all the akonadi stuff could use a rewrite. i use emacs for both.
I didn't want to "up"grade to Windows 10.
So I switched to Ubuntu, laughed at the fact that I needed an extension to create desktop shortcuts, and then switched to Mint.
windows vista
yar har is always an option
dualcore+4gb ram+hdd
I agree. I was considering switching to a WM, but learning what KDE has to offer made me realize that I don't need to gimp myself on purpose. What's the best resource to learn more about it?
the best resource is to use it yourself
try live-cd, like Kubuntu or Neon
but I'd personally recommend CachyOS live-cd because it's has fresh stuff inside
I already have KDE Plasma installed. I just want to read more about what it can do. More specifically, I want a desktop wallpaper with an animated spirograph like pic related. I understand that I'll probably have to program it, but that not the main issue.
i see
i am not sure but think i saw Plasma add-ons for this specific task, live wallpapers and such
Plasma can do .gif wallpapers by default.
just rightclick>add as wallpaper
I don't want a gif, I want the spirograph to be configurable (size, location, color, speed, etc.). I understand that something like this will require programming, I just want to know if this is even possible, and it if yes, then where can I read about it.
i think there's plugins that turn the wallpaper into conways game of life and stuff so a spirograph isn't impossible.
I'm not knowledgeable in Linux yet in terms of programming to it. but I think that X and wayland both accept any format as a display, they're basically an empty canvas and you just gotta find a way to send the pixels to them, I think X11 has something called main or root window/canvas which I think might be your wallpaper.
so do both a backend for controlling your vector graphics? and then send the result to X11/Wayland.
https://store.kde.org/p/1324580
dunno if it supports JS or even html5 but this could be an interesting way to do it
there's a plasma addon that lets you run shaders as wallpapers
I just use it to manually manage prefixes, works for me

Linux tech support thread
Nobody is asking for tech support in this thread, though, my butthurt friend.
Is it JUST me, or is Lutris kind of garbage?
It's good if you don't use install scripts.
I don't know, because I don't use it. lmao
It's not, but is not all that nooby friendly, you have to learn some things in order to use it properly, specially when you have to troubleshoot some game not working or having bugs.
I only use it for hentai games that don't work with system wine for some reason but just werk with wine-GE.
i wish i could create a prefix per-game without resorting to scripts and installing everything all over again
I thought Lutris created a separate prefix for each game by default. It doesn't?
I only tried to use it once, and it failed to run the one game that I had trouble running with vanilla Wine, so I uninstalled it.
it doesnt, i added a game and it keeps applying virtual desktop to my global prefix
Add installer as a game, then you can set up a path to an empty folder to be used as a prefix.
Isn't that literally the default?
I use Bottles because it's so much easier to not have a different prefix per game.
It's just a launcher. It has some installation scripts that may or may not make the game you want to play work. However it doesn't do anything special to make games work either. Anything Lutris does, you can do by hand.
You don't need a launcher.
It does have some problems like outdated install scripts (don't use them) and the UI is filled with touchscreen-isms that don't work on desktop.
frick gtk, lutris should really have been written with any other toolkit

It's only ever worked properly for me once.
Couldn't play sc2 with it, so into the trash it goes.

I am breaking the conditioning
What are your gains
I haven't bothered measuring them, assuming I have any at all
if you don't tell us, what is the point?

Neat icons, but why (and how even) are you attaching icons to shell scripts instead of using desktop entry files to make shortcuts?
Or did you make desktop entries and put ".sh" in the name field just to frick with me?
I actually just asked how to do that
and someone gave me the answer
I'm on it
To expand on what the Ganker guy said, desktop entries in /usr/share/applications (root-owned) and ~/.local/share/applications (user-owned) define the shortcuts in your menu, while desktop entries in ~/Desktop define actual desktop shortcuts.
Everything before the "..." above is true about Cinnamon and probably most other DEs though.
>have to do command line trash to get something as simple as shortcuts working
>>have to do command line trash to get something as simple as shortcuts working
That is Linux gaming for you
No "command line trash" was mentioned in that post except for chmod, which isn't even required to add execute permissions in any sane DE because you can just right-click the file and open a properties window and check a box to make it executable. As for needing Gnome Tweaks, frick Gnome but that's not a command line tool.

How could anyone tell you "yes they are take/real" when that's something that needs to be checked on a case by case basis? Also performance is going to vary based on a number of factors, like whether the game is CPU bound, GPU model and game. You can't extrapolate the result from a specific game to another or a different GPU to yours
okay can you put that in dumb linux mint user now please
You can't take results from card a and expect them to apply to card b, you can't results from game c to apply on game d. If you have a pascal card you're likely going to get a performance punishment on vkd3d games

I might get RF3 soon. If Payday 3 ever gets good I'll grab it. Dragon's Dogma 2 will probably be the next AAA game I buy but who the frick knows when that's out.
Pic related its me playing Tower Unite. If you recognize me ily
Gentoo
Warframe

I thought you said Genshin didn't work on Linux.
yeah you are getting banned

I wish windows had a command line as snappy as Linux's
I tried out ubuntu because of a uni project and goodness, that thing is great

monster hunter fps suck on linux
Rise is 144 locked on my 6700XT.
>some games that have native fricking versions (c**ter strike source) INSIST on using proton despite "force the use of a specific steam play compatability tool" not being enabled
steamos btw
tbh I force proton on games with native ports
some of the ports I've played have been ass
i (usually) do too but the issue is that vac b***hes at proton and will not let you play
(me)
and on top of that the text is actually unreadable
i checked the directory and it doesn't even download the linux binary, just windows exe
and yes i did try reinstalling
apparently for some fricking reason some games don't use steam linux runtime by default. leaving this here for people searching for solution in archive
No GE?
i deleted it because for some reason i thought it was causing the issues
Praise be. I was fricking wondering why Garry's Mod was using Proton when ProtonDB said it ran natively. I had assumed native support was deprecated (which apparently it might as well be)
>apparently for some fricking reason some games don't use steam linux runtime by default.
I noticed it happens a lot to game that were published without Linux support initially, then added at a later time.
last time i used linux was 2 years ago and it wasn't an issue back then, must be new
is it normal for the character in soul form to not make sounds when rolling?
Yes.
Back when I was still on nvidia I just used the DKMS drivers that Arch offered, literally never had any issues with those.
If proton doesn't work, what do I use?
proton ge
If proton ge doesn't work, what do I use?
prayers
doesn't work on what?
Linux tards really have the most fragile ego. You just point out something very obvious and they get overly defensive right away it's laughable.
There's plenty of examples on this thread already
I know right. Almost as pathetic as repeatedly engaging with threads about a thing you hate. Imagine doing that haha, couldn't be me
Has anyone looked into some sort of automatized benchmarking for reproducible results? Outside of only using games with benchmark mode of course
All while samegayging for hours, I don't know what kind of mental illness causes this
