Funding for further improvements to Linux gaming might stop if a dickface ends up in charge, but even if Microsoft buys Valve, they can't delete the Wine and Vulkan improvements that were already pushed. I'll still use Linux.
Can I play online starcraft?
I don't know. I haven't tried. I just installed it for the campaign nostalgia and was never good at online matches.
I think you need to be logged into battle.net.
Valve is without a doubt one of the reasons I daily drive Linux now.

Even if Valve stops supporting Linux literally tomorrow, they'd have left an immense mark that will be an incredibly solid foundation for penguin gaming for years to come.
GZDoom 4.11 is out and adds options to the launcher window. Apparently the Windows version had these options first...?
>Linux: GTK startup now offers all the options of the Windows variant
I make shortcuts to individual games so I almost never see this window anyway, but cool.
What is the best Wayland compositor for gaming? I know wlroots, weston, and kwin are the options.
i thought that was the whole idea behind gamescope or is that just a compositor on a compositor
also i've seen people recommend hyperland which has some extensions iirc were good for gaming
don't know how good it is, i don't keep up with wayland protocol developments because they're moronic and stink of the same arrogance gnome devs do
i think kwin is shaping up to be good for gaming since that's what valve uses
kwin, but more importantly, you need to be on an AMD GPU, Nvidia is spotty when it comes to wayland
unironically none, get the frick back to xorg for games.
If and when Xenia comes to Linux I will literally shoot hot cum all over my keyboard.

I've been messing around with steam link/remote play from my main linux PC
it doesn't work nicely with Wayland as expected and it kind of works with X11
I've been able to stream most games from my PC to the living room tv with no problems
However, when I'm doing remote play from my main PC to another PC in a different network most games work just as well except baldurs gate 3
It starts, I can see my main PC's desktop while it's launching, I can hear the game running, I can move the mouse around inside the game (I can hear the menu buttons playing sounds while the mouse passes through them) but it will just not show the game's screen
Every other game I tried works flawlessly
I should probably submit a bug report to valve's github but I don't even know how to begin troubleshooting this
Arch and void stranger, every time I think I finished it, it keeps going
I mean best to just submit the big report anyway
>I mean best to just submit the big report anyway
that's the first thing i'm hung up on
i don't know if it's a steam linux runtime problem, generic steam link problem, game specific problem, etc
would send a message to kisak with relevant data first but there's no private messaging on github and i dont want to bother repos that are irrelevant to this specific issue
You know they can move the issues anyway, I think it belongs on the steam for linux issue tracker
i didn't know that
im gonna set up a windows install when i get back home and check again on this pc before submitting a report though
Like the other anon said, you should most likely file a bug report, here's some things to check for more info, but may not necessarily fix the issue.
Check if BG3 is running in DX12 or Vulkan mode. If you have another AAA game that runs with Vulkan or DX12 try those too. I think Doom 2016 has a Vulkan mode. Since you say other games work I'd think it would be something particular to BG3 or not very common nowadays. I'm not sure how common DX12 is, I don't keep up with AAA releases.
Do you run BG3 with any launch commands that you don't use for any other game?
Does it run in gamescope?
Even if you fix the issue you should report a bug, I'm sure the developers want their software to be as good as possible.
BG3 is dx11/vulkan but yes it's running on dx11
it works fine on my TV streamed from my PC on the same network, doesn't work on my other PC on a different network
>I'm sure the developers want their software to be as good as possible.
this is technically unintended and unsupported steam link usage kek so idk if they would even bother with it
but yes i will probably send a report when i figure out where exactly the problem is

Hopefully they replace Gabe with a sign that just says "Don't make Valve public, contribute to Linux projects"
what desktop compositor to use if you have an nvidia card?
Xorg, always Xorg
I hope you don't have more than one monitor and if you do they're all the same refresh rate
>they're all the same refresh rate
?
I have 2x 240hz and 1x 60hz running together just fine
I stand corrected then.
What sorcery did you use so that Xorg doesn't default to the lowest common hz? You sure you're not secretly using Wayland?
>You sure you're not secretly using Wayland?
How fricking dare you. Apologize right now.
>xwayland
UHHHH BRO??
look at the server dumbdumb
Then why use xwayland, it's a compatibility layer for when you want to use Xorg shit on Wayland the frick
inxi always reports xwayland since it doesn't support wayland
display and server is what you're looking at
I would post my xrandr but it's fricking huge with 3 monitors
Is the refresh rate thing really an issue? It kinda just werked for me
>Is the refresh rate thing really an issue? It kinda just werked for me
It's always worked fine for me as well, both on X and Wayland.
The only time I've ran into issues is when the monitors aren't a multiple of the lowest monitor's refresh rate. So I had to reduce my 144Hz to 120Hz because my secondary monitors were 60Hz. If you're running 240Hz + 60Hz*2 then you'd have no problems.
So that's the problem. What an absolute oddity.
It's not that strange. Windows has the same issue as well.
If you imagine it like a rhythm, it's way easier to keep in sync with the beat when it happens at the same time every bar, if it doesn't then it's like having two metronomes going at once and trying to be accurate to both.
>Windows has the same issue as well.
I didn't have this issue on windows 7. 144hz + 60hz, both ran fine.
You might just be too fricking blind to see the problems then. If you play a game at 144Hz and you watch a movie at 60Hz, the 60Hz screen will stutter or tear. It's basically a guarantee.
>f you play a game at 144Hz and you watch a movie at 60Hz, the 60Hz screen will stutter or tear. It's basically a guarantee.
lol
lmao
240 is a multiple of 60...
see
Again, didn't have that problem on windows 7. Must be a hardware problem on your end.
>If you imagine it like a rhythm, it's way easier to keep in sync with the beat when it happens at the same time every bar, if it doesn't then it's like having two metronomes going at once and trying to be accurate to both.
fricking midwit. You have some shit combo of drivers and hardware that either need a specific config or don't play nice with each other.
metronome my ass lmao. you tip your fedora while typing that drivel out?
How am I wrong? That analogy is literally how display servers work to some degree. It has to present in sync.
because you're fricking moronic and everyone here but you seems to have no issue with mixed refresh rates
It kinda is. A common issue on Xorg is that if you have different refresh rates, Xorg throws a fit and sticks to the lowest refresh rate. I really, really want to know how you got it working differently.
I uhh, plugged the wires into my grafix card...
Doesn't seem to be the case for me.
I can set 3 different refresh rates just fine
I'm going to blame xwayland and there's nothing you can do to stop me. Please stop me, I'm mad jealous right now. HOW?!
you can't fricking run a program through xwayland on xorg you moron. that doesn't even make sense. I told you why inxi reports that.
>I uhh, plugged the wires into my grafix card...

That's why Nobara is for boomer illiterates and their equivalent, such as windows refugees who don't know any better. Don't knock it, it has its uses and keeps the smelly wingays away from you. For anyone who can read instructions and a willingness to learn further, you're better off with something else.

Full article in pic related. Reads more like a pep talk rather than a detailed article listing all their contributions.
i mean anyone who keeps up with graphics development knows how much valve contributes
check recently released vulkan standards and extensions, valve is behind most of them in part or in whole
they're solely responsible for VK_EXT_mutable_descriptor_type (which started as VK_VALVE_mutable_descriptor_type) which is very comfy
for mesa contributions in particular amoungst other things they're behind the faster non-llvm shader compiler ACO
It's a summary of this talk: https://youtu.be/L98v4epQmrg?t=15133
I didn't watch it myself, but I'll take a look later.
>What distro you rocking?
Garuda. I'm dipping my toe into Arch but I'm too lazy to set up everything. so I picked the gaming-centred distro and it's been great so far. My only issue is that every so often my updates are blocked by package conflict bullshit that requires me to look up the forums and see that i need to uninstall whatever random package is in the way and reinstall it once the update finishes
>Games you playan?
Armored Core 6, Lost Planet and trying to emulate Steambot Chronicles. I'm on a mecha bender. Post suggestions pls.
>What happens when Gayben dies and Pajeetsoft gets valce to shutdown their Linux projects?
dunno, download everything and cram it onto an HDD I suppose.
I've already managed such a thing with my GOG library since most of that is old ass games under 1gb each.
>My only issue is that every so often my updates are blocked by package conflict bullshit that requires me to look up the forums and see that i need to uninstall whatever random package is in the way and reinstall it once the update finishes
A very common problem with these meme gaming distros. Doesn't help that Garuda is run by a pajeet.
>post suggestions pls
Armored Core 1&2, no I'm not joking they're actually pretty good, I played them in anticipation for AC6, which I still haven't gotten to.
Front Mission is mech tactics. Zone of the Enders is good. Brigador is tactical mech action, and it's really fun.
I'm also on a mech bender
Quit installing meme distros run by some individual autismo what is wrong with you people
I like convenience. I end up reinstalling my shit twice a year minimum because my shit keeps breaking so i like it when the distro takes care of all the gaming bullshit for me. A few years ago I tried to take the advice of all the Ganker autists and install Debian. It was pure hell. getting literally anything to work was nothing but frustration.
I'll stick with my meme distro thanks
You just fricking contradicted your first sentence with the following one.
is garuda any good as someone who only ever used ubuntu?
Not worth using. Go Arch or go Endeavour OS.
what's bad about it?
The meme answer you will get is pajeetOS
The actual answer is none really. If you've tried Arch is the same shit. Like these other distros based Arch they are just flavored. That's really it
Do you want to use a distro where the maintainer can accidentally erase your entire home directory after pushing an update? Which did happen at least once.
>The actual answer is none really
Hehe.
Fedora is the new Ubuntu/Linux Mint. I'd use the Nobara fork to get straight into gaming. It's handled by the guy that does all the GE-Protons.
what does nobara offer out of the gate?
Gaming distro, so almost everything related to gaming, mainly non-pirated gaming, is packed into it for peace of mind. GE did make it for his boomer illiterate dad after all.
I wouldn't call Garuda bad at all. It's based on Arch and has tweaks/additions that make it good for gaming out of the box.
But my fricking god it is so fricking bloated and disgusting looking out of the box. The theme and icons are sickening and it has Cairo dock installed out of the box.
It helps that you don't have to waste time tweaking it for games, but then you have to tweak it to not get eye cancer.
If you want a gaming distro then your best option is probably Nobara. If you want an Arch based distro then just use actual Arch even if it does seem daunting.
Personally I use Arch with Nobara's custom kernel. Best of both worlds.
>Personally I use Arch with Nobara's custom kernel.
You mean you just copied what GE listed on his homepage?
That would take too much effort to do manually. Some kind soul has put the Nobara kernel on the AUR so I use that.
Arch is popular because it has the most up-to-date packages, gives the end user complete control, doesn't require compilation, and you can pretend to know what you're doing. The only other distro that offers all of this to my knowledge is Void Linux.
>Some kind soul has put the Nobara kernel on the AUR so I use that.
Damn, that's nice. Is it kept up to date?
It was last updated 16 hours ago so yes.
You just have to make sure to update your AUR kernel as well if pacman -Syu updates your base kernel, otherwise you can't boot the custom kernel. Not a big deal since base/zen kernels still work so you can run yay or whatever and reboot but still.
>Arch
>Arch
>Aaaarch
What libraries is Proton built against that warrant using this clusterfrick of a OS?
?
I don't even understand the question. You don't have to use Arch for Proton.
Obviously. But there must be some reason people jerk off Arch instead of using something sane like Debian.
I don't want to use 2 year old drivers
Bleeding edge + no single corporation owns Arch unlike say Opensuse, Ubuntu or Fedora. That's it.
maybe because the situation with mesa and vulkan is evolving constantly? even aside from valve's contributions khronos is explicitly targeting improving dxvk and vkd3d-proton
you literally have to use a rolling release distro (granted i wouldn't go with arch, opensuse tumbleweed is comfy)
in fact if it weren't for the fact that i don't want to wait for mesa to compile every time since my CPU is shit and the fact that none of the community builds for opensuse tumbleweed have the settings i want i'd be on git drivers
also debian isn't sane, its definition of stable is completely moronic
>also debian isn't sane, its definition of stable is completely moronic
From a ricer point of view it sure isn't.
who the frick cares about the opinion of ricers
i'm talking about from a developer perspective
Does this look like a developer thread to you?
what developers do is extremely relevant to gaming
what ricers do is not relevant to anyone
It's Debian that seems insane to me and I'm a Mintgay. Stability is good and all but is it worth ancient packages? Rolling release is superior, even if you need stability I don't see why you wouldn't use Ubuntu or Mint over Debian.
>try running fo2 on deck
>mouse is choppy as frick
anyone else run into this?
played through AC7 (again) at 120+fps on this guy that I just built.
never had a computer or display this fast, really fricking wild.
>never had a computer or display this fast, really fricking wild.
What do you mean fast? Were you using AMD on windows? Because that's a big mistake.
no I've only had a thinkpad or business desktop with a basic gpu in it.
>thinkpad

Why not just use Windows?
Don't like it.
Bad support for old games.
Constant breakages (yes, when the system decides to reboot itself without user input it's broken).
Inefficient use of hardware resources.
Outdated file systems (you can play starfield from HDD on linux, on windows it would crash).
Has anyone had problems running monitors at 240hz or using freesync? I got a new monitor and if I try using either, it causes a lot of graphical errors and blinking.
