Change my mind
>Is a thrash system to use in your everyday life
For everyday work? Linux trounces Windows for me. If I only had to do non-gaming tasks, I would never go back, it just so much snappier and flexible.
It's a great system for every day use, but that's just my perspective and I've been using it since I was 15 back in 2005. That plus it's a great environment for development/programming. I also don't get what you mean by less than optimal. Compared to what, Windows? Because I have a lot of games that perform better on Linux.
I agree that the year of Linux will likely never come though. Tinkering is required and I don't think that'll ever not be the case, and there's little official support for GNU/Linux from a lot of major software vendors. Mass consumers shouldn't have to deal with that, unless someone Valve-adjacent (probably Google more likely) comes out with a distro that "just werks".
Still, ever since 2018 gaming on Linux has been exploding every year in ways that I couldn't even imagine back in 2005.
>Because I have a lot of games that perform better on Linux.
I read this a lot, but after actually raging trying distros
I only got a somehow slower system with not even the basics working in a clean install
For example the copy paste "speed bug" that has been existing apparently for years is simply inexcusable >"just werks"
If the main programs actually worked it sure would help a lot
Frick Windows. Also I enjoy occasional tinkering. If a game doesn't work out of the box, and I take five minutes to fix it and document the fix on PC Gaming Wiki, frick ProtonDB, then I feel smart and I still get to play the game. If it's any harder than that, though, I don't bother. I can still reboot to Wangblows 7 if it comes to that, but I'll hate it.
if you don't need maya nor adobe software linux runs laps around windows for non gaming workloads
even the desktop experience is miles better on the more popular DEs except gnome
I use Wayland as a daily driver, I found it began working out for me better than X11 after I moved to Arch since shit was constantly updated. Meanwhile if you're relying on official repos from shit like Ubuntu you'll wait ages for updates and deal with breakage until then.
Not saying its perfect, but it's not getting new features like VRR
yeah the problem is Wayland is under-specified to be a total replacement for X, there needs to be a larger spec to make it work properly for that use-case. Instead each DE is making their own "Wayland++" so to speak to get around these issues but really all of this should have been standardized from the get-go.
try not to rely too much on the asset store, a lot of those tools only work on Windows too. If you have absolutely 0 experience I think you'd be better off with something like godot
Natively? No. Rockstar hates Linux.
With Proton? The latest ProtonDB reports for desktop PC say it mostly works. The latest reports for Steam Deck say it crashes.
https://www.protondb.com/app/1174180
Deck reports are on top, so scroll way the frick down for the PC reports if you don't care about Steam Deck. ProtonDB apparently wants to be DeckDB now. (Either that or the guy running the site didn't think about how shitty it would be for PC users once there are a lot of Deck reports for a game.)
I play RDR2 almost religiously on Linux, last I check it still works (I run everything via Proton Experimental). The performance is also better on Linux compared to Windows at max settings according to one of the benchmarks floating around.
>Thing that will never happen

>linux gaming is so dead the deck is already its largest platform with like 20 units in the wild
Steam reported 132M MAU in 2021, and it's constantly growing, so these figures are underestimations.
Out of that number, Linux accounts for 1.18% or 1.56 million active users.
Assuming all 7.48% of SteamOS Holo users are Deck users and not people who installed a distro that hasn't had an official public release, that's 118 000 Deck users out there right now. It's not a bad number for a niche form factor PC.
>Assuming all 7.48% of SteamOS Holo users are Deck users
It's only officially been released for the Steam Deck. There is HoloISO, but you might as well use Manjaro on a desktop.
That's why I made that assumption.
It's technically possible to install SteamOS Holo on a standard PC, but it takes work and is unlikely to work as expected because it's designed with the Deck in mind only right now.
Anon your own fricking image clearly shows Arch Linux is the most popular with SteamOS 3 being in 5th.
Not everyone uses the same GPU, which is why the Steam Deck's GPU is at the top of the GPU list, because everyone with a Deck is using the exact same GPU.
I tried out linux (arch btw) for the first time last week and have to say I'm surprised at how well games are running. There's no difference to how DMC5 looks and performs on linux compared to how it's on my Win7 install, and I'm using an nvidia card. The most noticable differences I experienced with RE2make cutscenes, but nothing major or game breaking. People who use windows over linux these days really must have no self respect.
>I'm using an nvidia card.
Has Nvidia improved their drivers? Is it now possible to start two x.org sessions on different virtual terminals? You can switch terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+F[1-12]. You probably start on F7, F5 or F1. AMD and Intel allows you to start a new x.org session - say as another user - while another x.org session is running.
I dropped Nvidia for Radeon but FWIW they started open-sourcing their kernel module (though I guess they kind of had no choice after the leak) and are allowing nouveau to use the source. So we might get something as quality as Mesa on Intel/AMD down the line. Currently the kernel module itself is not good enough in terms of Linux coding standards to be part of the kernel and I think Nvidia is working on improving that, but the shortest path is just to give Nouveau as much sauce as they can without violating other 3rd party agreements they have.
also I think the reason they're doing this, other than the leak, is they're spooked by AMD's success in the handheld PC market (Deck + competitors) and now Intel is entering the market with the same advantages since they've been contributing code to Linux for their GPUs since day 1
>Is it now possible to start two x.org sessions on different virtual terminals?
just ran startx in another tty and and seems to work fine

not sure why you'd use anything else with Linux at this point, Nvidia is still playing catch-up on Linux drivers and Intel hasn't released their cards yet
no, you can run via proton. In winecfg you have to override some library to use mods, and then after that you can use HF patch or whatever just as normal

They're not. 99% of the Linux threads on Ganker use Tux as the OP image. The threads in your image were more likely made by some butthurt Windowstard like you.
Been using it for 13 years, gaming included although it was total shit back then, last 4 years changed everything. My whole company runs exclusively on linux and open source softwares, tools to create shit included, routers, payment software, phones, tablets etc. I pay 0 fees for licenses and it saves me around 20K to 35K a year. Meanwhile others bussiness people I know cant shut the frick up about how much they pay for shit and how shit services are when they need them because everything is outsourced to moronic pajeets.
Because there's always the off chance that someone is asking a question out of pure curiosity instead of bad faith, and I don't have anything better to do than argue on Ganker.
I do every now and then.
I just finished playing Monster Hunter: World on Linux with a friend for example. Now I'm just about to head to bed but figured I'd check Ganker before passing out for the night.
Just completed Risen 1, enjoyed it and it just werked. Good game.
Now playing Risen 2, just werks and I kind of like it. Risen 1 felt more like Gothic, but this game is okay I guess. Combat feels worse but more easy? Hard to explain.
As long as the Deck sells I think more people will see Linux gaming as viable. Really it just needs devs working on certain games to be willing to make their games' anticheat software Linux-friendly, considering the games that are fricked by their anticheat are also some of the most popular in the world.
I've been really impressed with proton... but I do wish the configurations for it were a bit less scattered. Can't say on OS never used it, and the Deck hasn't arrived yet.
Useless pipe dream. The guise of 'use linux!' means weak minded drones don't realize valve just wants to force you into THEIR ecosystem and make sure its difficult to purchase a game from someone else.
They're pushing Linux gaming in the first place because they think MS wants to be the ones forcing you into THEIR ecosystem.
lmao this is absolute cope because /r/pcmasterrace cant stand if valve has competition.
The FACTS are:
steam deck is designed to force you into their ecosystem, no one gives a flying FRICK about linux (rightfully) which means anything non-valve will be the standard linux bullshit steps which no regular person wants to do (also rightfully).
Also, the FUD about MS shutting down win32 apps to only come from the store and thus removing steam and all the other shitty launchers is 100% moronation and you are a corporate tool if you think it will ever happen.

Any way to make a mod organizer/manager work with steam games? I'm using one for a game and its telling me that it cant see my steam install. I'm thinking there is a way to launch the manager with proton or something to make it "aware" of steam. I've tried adding the manager to steam and launching it through that but no dice.

Can you play Cod Warzone on Linux? Lutris doesn't say anything
looks like no since they have some AIDS kernel anti-cheat that isn't supported on Linux yet
weird how anti linux stuff never stops cheaters
